Hunter Skill Guide
Written by Knil

 Getting Started

 Basic Equipment
Basic equipment for hunting can be found at hunting shops in Yanille and Nardah.

 Bait
Several of the hunter methods use bait. At the moment, hunter methods work fine without bait, though bait increases your chances of succeeding slightly.

Deadfall Bait
Image Raw meat (Wild kebbit, sabretooth kebbit) - Any kind of raw meat can be used so you can pick some up from bird snarers and trappers in the area. Raw meat cannot get lost while using it as bait so you only need a couple.
Image Rainbow fish (Barbtailed kebbit) - To get rainbow fish, use stripy feathers as your feathers when you lure fish in the Barbarian Village or the Seers' Village Lake. Stripy feathers can be gotten by hunting tropical wagtails or by buying them from the fancy-dress store in southeastern Varrock. Rainbow fish will get lost whenever your trap is triggered by you prey, so it is best to do without it.
Image Barley (Prickly kebbit) - The only way to get barley is to grow it from farming or buy it from other players. Since barley will get lost whenever a kebbit triggers your trap, it's best to do without it.

Net Trapping Bait
Lizards and salamanders each prefer a different type of herb tar.

Image Guam tar (Swamp lizard)
Image Marrentil tar (Orange salamander)
Image Tarromin tar (Red salamander)
Image Harralander tar (Black salamander)

Herb tar can be made by collecting swamp tar from the Lumbridge swamps and using them with the proper herb while you're holding a pestle and mortar. When collecting swamp tar it's best to bring energy potions so you can keep running. Here's a map showing the best way to collect it.

Image

Since herb tar takes so long to collect and make, you shouldn't use bait for net trapping.

Box Trapping Bait
Image Spicy tomato (Chinchompa) - This can be made by using a tomato on a bowl while holding a knife and then using spice on it. All the ingredients for this can be found in the Culinaromancer's chest. Since it is lost whenever your box trap is triggered by your prey, it's best to do without it.
Image Spicy meat (Red chinchompa) - This can be made the same way as spicy tomato, but using meat instead. It is also best not to use this.

Imp Trapping Bait
ImageImageImageImage Beads (Imp) - These are sometimes dropped by imps. The best place to find imps is around the Karamja volcano. Beads are mandatory for imp trapping.

 Camo-gear
Fur from tracking creatures can be brought to the fancy-dress shop owner in southeastern Varrock to make camo-gear. Each piece requires two of the proper type of fur and 20 coins. Nothing at the fancy-dress store has a level requirement to make.

Image

When worn in its matching enviroment, camo-gear increases you chances of getting a succeeding with "place and wait" traps such as bird snares, deadfalls, box traps, or net traps. Some camo-gear has a level requirement to wear.

Fur or hides from pitfall creatures can be brought to the fancy-dress shop owner in southeastern Varrock to make Pitfall Gear. Hats require one good fur or hide while tops and legs can be made from either good or tatty fur or hides. When worn in their matching enviroments, pitfall gear acts like camo-gear, but is much better.

 Traps
Multiple bird snares, box traps, rabbit snares, net traps, and pitfall traps can be set at the same time depending on your level.

Level 1 - One trap at a time
Level 20 - Two traps at a time
Level 40 - Three traps at a time
Level 60 - Four traps at a time
Level 80 - Five traps at a time

 Bird Snare
What you need: Bird snares, torch and tinderbox (optional), proper hunter gear
Level: 1+

Image

This is the most basic form of hunting. To catch birds, set up your bird snare in an area where your prey is flying around and wait for one to land on your bird snare and hopefully be caught. The bird may escape and disarm the trap and the snare may fall over, though. If that happens, just pick up the snare and set it up again. Camo-gear increases your chances of getting a catch, so make sure you wear some that matches the enviroment you're in. At level 39 you may use torches with your snare to conceal your scent and increase your chances of catching a bird. This method is most effective when you are able to set up more than one trap.

 Tracking
What you need: A noosing Wand
Level: 1+

Image

Tracking is the second basic form of hunting and involves tracking creatures from their burrows to their hiding places and capturing them. Tracking is slightly different in each enviroment, but the basic way to do it is the same. Start by inspecting a hole or burrow. Then, follow the tracks and search objects such as logs, tunnels, rocks, or plants near it to uncover more of the trail. Then when the trail leads to a hiding place like a snowdrift, a bush, or a pile of sand, attack it to catch the creature. The creature may not be in the first hiding place the trail leads to and it may escape.

 Butterfly Netting:
What you need: A butterfly net, butterfly jars
Level: 15+

Butterfly netting is a form of hunting that requires more hunting skill than basic bird snaring and tracking. Butterflies are not easy targets. To catch butterflies, click on them while wielding a butterfly net and with an empty butterfly jar in your inventory. If someone else is not already chasing it, you will follow it until it is caught.

 Deadfall
What you need: A knife, a hatchet to cut logs, torch and tinderbox (optional), bait (optional), proper hunter gear
Level: 23+

Image

Deadfall hunting uses a boulder propped up by a log and sometimes bait to catch creatures. Lay this trap by using the "set-trap" option on a boulder while you have a knife and logs. After your trap is set, it is best to walk as far away from it as possible so that you do not repel the kebbits. The kebbits may set off the trap but jump out of the way and the trap may collapse by itself if it is left too long. In either case you will have to reset the trap with some more logs. While you are waiting for kebbits to be caught in your trap, it's best to cut down some nearby trees for more logs. You may also use the bait your prey prefers on your trap, but it will still work fine without it. Any kind of raw meat will work for wild kebbits and sabretooth kebbits and since it can never be lost, you will only need one or two. On the other hand, rainbow trout and barley will be lost whenever a kebbit sets off the trap whether it is caught or not. Deadfall traps may be smoked with a torch to hide your scent at level 39. You can only set up one deadfall trap at one time.

Deadfall Rewards
Each deadfall creature drops bones and a unique item.
Image Kebbit Claws - Wild Kebbit - With level 32 crafting, kebbit claws can be used with leather and dragonhide vambraces to make spiky vambs which give an extra +2 strength bonus.
Image Barb-tail Harpoon - Can be equipped and used as a regular harpoon
Image Kebbit Spike - Used to make kebbit bolts for the hunters' crossbow
Image Kebbit Teeth - Can be crushed with a pestle and mortar and used with Avantoe and a water-filled vial to make a hunters' potion which temporarily increases your hunting by three

 Rabbit Snaring
What you need: Rabbit snares, ferrets, torch and tinderbox (optional), proper hunter gear
Level: 27+

Image

You must have completed the Eagles' Peak quest to do rabbit snaring. The rabbit snaring method uses a ferret to flush rabbits out of their holes straight into your snares. When flushing a rabbit out of a hole, it will run out of a hole on either side of the one you flushed, so place a rabbit snare right in front of to the hole on the right and left of the one you're flushing. Then just keep flushing until one is caught. Ferrets may run away after flushing holes so be sure to bring several. Rabbit snares may be smoked with a torch to hide your scent at level 39.

Rabbit Snaring Creatures

Rabbit Snaring Rewards
Rabbits drop bones, raw rabbit meat, and a rabbit foot
Image Rabbit foot - Rabbit
Image Rabbit feet may be used with a ball of wool to make a rabbit-foot necklace which increases your chances of getting a bird's nest while woodcutting.

 Box Trapping
What you need: Box traps, torch and tinderbox (optional), bait (optional), proper hunter gear
Level: 27+

Image

The box trapping method uses a box trap to capture creatures alive. To make a box trap, lay the trap in an area with the creature you're trying to hunt around. Once the trap is set, it's best to walk away from the trap so that you don't repel the creatures. You may use bait if you want, but it isn't necessary and I don't recommend it. Box trap creatures may trigger the trap without getting caught and the trap may collapse after a while. Any time a trap is triggered by your prey, the bait is lost whether they are caught or not. Smoking your traps with a torch and setting multiple traps is recommended. Ferrets may only be caught after completing the Eagles' Peak quest.

Image Chinchompa - Level 53 - 198 experience - Spicy tomato - Piscatoris Hunter Area
Image Red Chinchompa - Level 63 - 265 experience - Spicy meat - Feldip Hunter Area

Box Trapping Rewards
Each box trapping creature is caught alive. Chinchompas and red chinchompas are stackable and can be equipped into your weapon slot. They can then be thrown at enemies and explode, damaging all enemies within one square of the explosion in a multi-combat zone. The attack style can be changed to short, medium, and long fuse lengths depending on how far away your opponent is.

Image Red Chinchompa - Ranged level: 55 - Range bonus: +70

 Net Trapping
What you need: Small fishing nets, ropes, torch and tinderbox (optional), bait (optional)
Level: 29+

Image

Net trapping uses a rope, a small fishing net, a young tree, and sometimes bait to make a net trap to catch lizards and salamanders. To make a net trap choose the "set-trap" option on a young tree. After your trap is set, it is best to walk as far away from it as possible so that you do not repel the salamanders. Herb tar may be used as bait, but this is not necessary. Lizards and salamanders may set off the trap and not get caught and the trap may collapse after a while. Any time a trap is set off by a lizard or salamander, the bait is lost whether they are caught or not. Net traps may be smoked with a torch to hide your scent at level 39. Set up more than one trap if you can.

Net Trapping Creatures

 Pitfall Trapping
What you need: A hatchet, a knife, a teasing stick, food, armor
Level: 31+

The point of pitfall trapping is to get the hide of large exotic creatures without causing excessive damage to it. This is accomplished by luring your prey into falling into concealed spiked pits. To make a pitfall trap, click on a pit while you have a knife and some logs. You must have at least two spiked pits to do this right. Once your pits are set, use the "tease" option on one of the creatures that has not been taken and it will begin to attack and follow you. Lead it to the edge of one of your pits and jump over it, and your prey will either jump or try to walk over and be trapped. If it jumps over, you will have to lead it over another pit. You cannot jump it over the same pit twice in a row. Make sure you tease the creature again regularly or else someone may steal it from you. Damage taken from the pitfall creatures can add up so be sure to bring decent food and armor.

Pitfall Creatures
Each pitfall creature gives big bones and one good or tatty fur or hide. Since they attack you, they also have different combat levels.

 Falconry
What you need: 500 coins, no weapon or gloves
Level: 43+

Image

Falconry uses a falcon to catch creatures that are too fast for you to catch with other traps, and it is the fastest way to train hunter. To start, go to the falconry area inside the Piscatoris Hunter Area and pay Matthias, the falconer, 500 coins to use one of his falcons. Then, by clicking on the kebbits in the area, you can send your falcon swooping down on them and hopefully catching them. It's best to click on the kebbits as soon as possible so that it isn't taken by someone else's falcon. If your falcon catches the kebbit, it will hover around and an arrow will appear above its head. You can then "retrieve" the falcon and the kebbit it caught. Avoid sending your falcon after kebbits that are far away since people closer might take it or the kebbit could move before the falcon gets there. Move closer to the kebbit before clicking on it.

 Imp Trapping
What you need: Magical imp boxes, beads
Level: 71+

Image

Image

Imp trapping involves using a magical box trap to capture imps. The best place to do this is at the western side of the Karamja volcano where there are two imp repawns. Set your traps near the imp respawns and kill the imps if they wander too far away so that they will respawn next to your traps. Imp trapping will not work if you don't use beads as bait.

 Hunters' Crossbow
Image Leon in the Yanille Hunter Shop will sell you a Hunters' Crossbow for 1300 coins. The crossbow requires level 50 Ranged to wield and gives a range bonus of +55. It fires faster than a normal crossbow, but may only hold spike bolts. Leon will make 6 kebbit bolts for you for a kebbit spike and 20 coins and will make 6 long kebbit bolts for you for a long spike and 40 coins. You may also fletch them yourself by using a chisel on a kebbit spike or long spike.

 Training Guide

Image Level 1-9: Polar Kebbits (Tracking)
Polar kebbits have the shortest trails of all the tracking creatures and make for very fast catches. Crimson swifts on the other hand give slightly more experience, but may not be caught reliably. You will often have to wait a while and the bird snares may miss. Also, although golden warblers have give 18 more experience per catch, they have the same unreliability as the crimson swifts and will either give the same or less experience as catching polar kebbits. You must catch 33 polar kebbits to get to level 9.

Image Level 9-11: Copper Longtails (Bird Snare)
Though copper longtails have the same unreliability as crimson swifts and golden warblers, they give twice as much experience as polar kebbits and give faster experience than following the long trails of common kebbits and feldip weasels. You will only need to catch 7 copper longtails to reach level 11.

Image Level 11-19: Cerulean Twitches (Bird Snare)
Cerulean Twitches give slightly more experience than copper longtails and have the same speed. Catching butterflies at level 15 is not recommended as they are too spread out and do not give much experience. You will need to catch 41 cerulean twitches to get to level 19.

Image Level 19-29: Tropical Wagtails (Bird Snare)
Tropical wagtails give 31 more experience than cerulean twitches and have the same speed. At level 20 you may set up two snares at the same time. You will need to catch 85 tropical wagtails to reach level 29.

Image Level 29-43: Swamp Lizards (Net Trapping)
Swamp lizards give much more experience than tropical wagtails and are quite reliable. You may set up two traps at first and then three traps at level 40. Bait is not necessary. You must catch 253 swamp lizards to get to level 43.

Image Level 43-57: Spotted Kebbits (Falconry)
This is where the real grinding begins. Though spotted kebbits give much less experience than swamp lizards, they are very quick and easy to catch, though you will have to catch a lot of them. Orange salamanders give over twice as much experience, but are not nearly as easy to catch as spotted kebbits. You must catch 1471 spotted kebbits to reach level 57. It's a huge number, and falconry will get extremely boring, but it is the best way to train for now.

Image Level 57-59: Dark Kebbits (Falconry)
Dark kebbits give more experience than spotted kebbits, though there aren't as many in the falconry area. You'll need to catch 339 dark kebbits to get to level 59.

Image Level 59-70: Red Salamanders (Net Trapping)
You're probably pretty much fed up with falconry by now, so if you want, you can train on red salamanders instead. This gives the best experience when you are able to use three or four traps. Bait is unnecessary. You will need to catch 1801 red salamanders to get to level 69.

Image Level 70-99 Red Chinchompas (Box Trapping)
From level on, 75 red chinchompas undoubtedly give the best experience. Using four or five traps, you will rake in the experience very quickly. Bait is unnecessary. To get to level 99 you'll need to catch 46,404 red chinchompas.

First two stupid questions about deadfall.

1) Can you use any type of meat (ie the bird meat that's all over the ground lol)

2) Do you get the bait back, or does it get 'eaten'

Also some leveling tips.

I went from level 25-30 in about 30 minutes in the polar area by setting up two bird snares and catching sapphire galacialias' while I was waiting for something to get caught.

Well I went out and tested the bait thing, it seems like you always get it back.

That said deadfall traps are a complete waste of time. First of all there aren't enough spots, so you either have to share, or put up with people stealing your trap, or noobs whining that you stole their trap. If that wasn't enough the trap seems to fail a lot at low levels. So I don't recommend this way of leveling.

Same thing with pitfall traps. Not enough pitfalls, and the process of teasing and jumping is a right pain in the beetonk.

So I think bird traps and maybe box traps when you get to level 53 is the best way to go. Bring a net and jar if you get bored and you catch bflys.

Net trapping uses a rope, a small fishing net, a young tree, and sometimes bait to make a net trap to catch lizards and salamanders. To make a net trap choose the "set-trap" option on a young tree. After your trap is set, it is best to walk as far away from it as possible so that you do not repel the kebbits.

Kebbits? thought we were talking about salamanders here...

But to be very hounest, that was the only mistake i found. Great job!

Deadfalls are actually pretty good if you can get a spot all to yourself (I've always been able to), pitfall isn't really for training, it's just for getting that special hunting gear, and according to some of the top hunters I met and talked to, falconry is the best way to train from level 43 to 99. I've done some experimenting with the other methods and I agree.

Any kind of raw meat works. Raw meat never gets lost, but when creatures set off a trap, and you're using something other than raw meat for bait, it is lost. I've added that info to the guide. :)

Oops. It's fixed now. ^_^;

For those who gave me info about what the best training is, thanks, but it is very difficult to tell how best to train levels before 20 since those go by no matter what method you use. I agree with dr henry on his training advice for level 20 and up, though, and will probably add training advice to the guide soon. :)
