Maya is a couple grand, not close to free.

Blender and wings 3d are your best bet.

You can download a free version (with limited abilities, of course) of Maya on their site, http://www.alias.com/

There's also GMax which is just great! But like the free version of Maya, it's abilities are also limited... :)

Another free one, although not as good as the two above or Blender3D, is anim8or. (http://www.anim8or.com/)

anim8or is awsome, I used it a while ago. It won't produce something like you can get with thousand dollar programs, but it's good enough :)

Maya is like 6 grand or something... For a free program I'd use GMax, which is like 3DS Max but with limited capabilities.

Yeah blender or GMax are your best bets for good stuff, but if your starting out I'd go with anim8or then move to the other ones :)
