The new items added in the latest weekly development snapshot have so much potential for Vanilla Minecraft it blows my mind! (Yes, my Minecraft name is DoctorDharok)
Daylight Sensor - Outputs a redstone signal of varying strength that is equal to the amount of SUNLIGHT that the block is exposed to. If the sun is high in the sky at noon, it outputs a regular full strength signal that will travel through 15 redstone dust before running out of steam. However, just before dawn, it will start to output a signal that will only travel through one redstone dust (signal strength of 1). It slowly increments over time up to full strength, then back down to no signal once the sun is gone.
Redstone Comparator - Has two modes: Normal mode and subtraction mode. It takes an input from the back and an input from either side, it compares the signal strength of the inputs. If the side signal (Input B) is stronger than the back signal (Input A), it will not output anything. If there is no Input B from the side, it acts as if the signal strength for input B is 0 (the test will always pass). If Input A is stronger than input B, it will do one of two things. In default mode, it will allow the signal from the back (Input A) to pass through, coming out the other side with the same strength as it entered (so unlike almost any other device, it does not refresh your signal). In subtraction mode, the output will have a signal strength of (A-B). If the input from the back is full strength (15) and the input from the side is carried over 5 wire (strength 10), the output from the comparator will only travel for 5 wire (15-10).
The comparator will also generate a signal if the back input is touching a container, based on how full the container is. It reaches full signal strength at 95% container capacity filled. Unstackable items are correctly measured as taking up the slot the same way a full stack of 64 would.
Trapped Chest - Outputs a Redstone signal with a strength equal to the number of players accessing the chest. When you open the chest, it outputs a signal with a strength of 1. If your friend comes along and looks inside while you're inside, it will increase the output to 2 strength until one of you closes the interface returning the strength to 1. When you close the chest and no one is inside of it, the signal will stop.
Weight Detecting Pressure Plates (Gold (Light), Iron (Heavy)) - Output a different signal strength depending on the exact number of items that are on it. Does not detect anything except for items.
HOPPERS!!! - Can suck items from the environment (as entities) if they are on top, or from containers that are on top of it (such as a chest, minecart-chest, or dispenser) and will place these items into its internal inventory (5 slots). It can then also send these items from its inventory out into other containers (including hoppers) either downwards or horizontally in any direction (but not up). If anyone's played on a Tekkit server or heard of BuildCraft Mod's pipes, this is a low-tech Vanilla-themed version of their transport pipes! The famed Redstoner Sethbling has already designed an automated potion brewing system and an automated item sorting system based on the hoppers.
The possibilities are thrilling!
