RVET Event #57: September-October 2012
Village-wide Mafia game

The skies outside were overcast, and the Village's activity had dwindled as of late, but it didn't stop the town square from being any less busy. People were still meandering around, chatting, laughing, and generally enjoying each other's company. When a large splash was heard from the direction of the fountain in the middle of the square, hardly anyone paid it any mind, assuming it was just Pyro3000 jumping into it again. But moments later there erupted a shriek that turned heads and sent people running towards the noise.

"What's wrong?" Landerpurex yelled, pushing towards the front of the crowd. "It's...it's Sayaka," someone choked out. Lander's eyes quickly darted to the fountain, where he saw a body floating facedown, a black knife sticking out of it. The sheer amount of blood loss was quickly mixing with the fountain's waters, turning the entire thing red. Lander noticed that there was a piece of paper stabbed between the knife and Sayaka's body, and he carefully removed the knife and clutched the paper. The ink on it was starting to run, and Sayaka's blood had already soaked most of it, but Lander was able to make out the writing on it, and he read the note out loud:

"You Villagers have spent far too many of your days making a mockery of the Mafia. You play games for sport, and yet you have twisted it into something almost unintelligible. You hide behind facades as you make up excuses for pointing fingers at each other. You dive so deeply into the complexities of your games that you fail to see the evils in front of you. You miss the forest for the trees.

So we've decided to solve your problem for you. With Sayaka as our first victim, a true game of Mafia has emerged in the Village, and we invite all who live therein to take place. No longer will you be able to hide behind your so-called 'veteran' status, making and renouncing claims based on past events. No, this time the game will be fully public, held in sight of the entire Village each day and night, not sequestered off to your little Literary Society building.

You shall start tomorrow, here in the town square. Your cooperation is non-negotiable. I do not feel I need to remind you of the consequences if you decline.

Landerpurex knew all eyes were on him as he read the letter, so he tried to restrain from gulping as he finished it off. The Village square was dead silent, but everyone knew one thing for certain--in the days that would follow, it would become far more active than in the weeks past.

Mafia Information
You heard him! The game of Mafia has been in RuneVillage for several years, but this event marks the first time that such a game has taken place in a Global announcement. As such, the RVET is inviting everyone to join in on the fun, even if (and especially if) you've never played a Mafia game before! Sayaka will be guest-hosting the event, meaning that even RVET members can join the ranks this time. Signups are lasting from now until the game starts on Thursday--so post here and put your name down, quick!

Don't know how to play Mafia? Don't worry, it's ridiculously easy. Here's the game in a nutshell:

• A certain amount (typically 25-33%) of the players are "Mafia members", while the rest are "Villagers". These roles are randomly selected for you before the game begins. The Mafia members try to keep their identity a secret as much as possible, but are allowed to talk to each other secretly.
• Every "Day phase", all of the players chat in the topic, trying to figure out who the Mafia members are, and casting votes to "Lynch" (kill) another player. If any player gets a majority of votes, the Day immediately ends with that player's death, and he/she is out of the game. (If 72 hours go by with no lynch, the Day ends regardless.)
• After that comes the "Night phase", a shortened amount of time where no one can speak, as you're all supposed to be asleep! Except the Mafia is up to no good, and when dawn breaks the next day, it turns out that the Mafia killed someone during the night.
• The game ends when only one of the two factions remain.
