It's an act of professionalism. He's still the lovable Cam you know at heart.
I look forward to Cam proving me wrong by maintaining this level of decency outside of this topic.

Key word being once, there. Ever since Jagex dropped us like a crazy ex, the best thing we can be in RS is the write-in candidate of fansites. With rare exception, write-ins do hilariously bad. To continue the analogy, we need to get our name back on the ballot (get Jagex to take us back) or drop out of the race (forget about RS as anything more than just another game we cover). Since most of this site doesn't play with any real regularity, there's no way Jagex will reinstate us. RS is, therefore, a waste of a primary effort.

Instead, we should focus on being where the people are - that's either WoW, or soon, GW2, maybe TF2. Steam's the way forward here, not RS.

Was our flagship game because we no longer HAVE ANYTHING. Yes. WE HAVE NOTHING. I would like to fix this.

Now you bring up Jagex dropping us - Yes that sucked. But can you just clarify something for me - How much support did we get from Jagex in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008? If you are under any impression that we -need- Jagex to be there patting us on the head to get anywhere is ridonkulus. Matter of fact, I know correlation doesn't equal causation, but our slide coincided with Jagex getting in touch with fan-sites. How did we get members in the first place? By being active as a community. By talking to people, stopping to help, etc. Frankly the only thing that has changed is a lack of guides - And if you think anyone is using any resources but RSWiki (Excepting smaller, focused sites which we clearly wont ever be (I'm thinking groups like DGS who focus specifically on Dungeoneering)) then you're kidding yourself. The one focus we have left is community - And that's exactly what this topic is aiming at.

Now you're arguing that we should be getting users from WoW, GW2, TF2 and Steam. Great. Do that. From my limited knowledge, I believe Eadwulf is doing great work with building the Steam side of things.

If you think that's the way forward, get cracking. Go on a recruitment drive on WoW. Get into GW2 when it's released and set up an RV clan. Get into Team Fortress and get recruiting. Help Eadwulf build up the Steam base.

If you think any of that precludes a group of people who STILL play RS from getting more active and building up the clan, then you are once again kidding yourself. You don't have to play RS if you don't want too. To then criticise those that do, insisting that they are 'wasting their time' when it's in no way harming the site and has every potential to boost it, is a pretty terrible thing for someone to do.

I've got an idea. How about Fuzzy Bunny what Jagex thinks about us. Just because they've ditched us doesn't mean it's the end of the road. I'm sure we're not gonna be the only site to just be tossed aside like this.

Yes, we are worse off. We have a declining user base, and that's a big problem. However you look at the history of when we exploded and when we didn't. The site was shedding members even with being a Gold fansite, and I can guarantee you that those that left didn't leave because "Oh well this isn't a gold fansite, I'm going to one that is". Other issues are at play here. You clearly don't need a Jagex stamp to succeed at growing your membership base (Plenty of clans have done so, for example, take a look at DGS - They even broke away from tip.it to develop on their own, and have done a stellar job).

Basically the main issue we have had is the lack of boots on the ground inside games to try and recruit people. Since I've created this thread, we've had about 4 members join the RS clan chat - Will they sign up to the forums, who knows. At the very least we're pumping up activity and brand awareness. Which is a good thing.

I am kind of against inviting random people. Last thing we ant is tens of people who hardly speak English in the chat. Or some douchebag who ruins all the fun. Maybe try to talk with people first and if someone shows that he is adequate and speaks English fairly well, only then invite him?

The bad part about desperately needing new members is that you don't get to be all that picky with who comes in. Letting everyone in who wants in, and then removing trouble makers is a better strategy for two reasons.

First off it doesn't limit how fast people can join, if anyone is allowed in then we don't need to take time to get to know each person before we invite them. We just flip the process so that we learn about them once they're already in.

Second, removing people shows that we care. Say we do have someone being an outright ass in Chat, we remove him and that shows people we are dedicated the keeping to a certain standard and that we are fair and allow everyone a chance.

Barriers to entry are one of the things that would probably be best to avoid at this stage in the game.

So far, I think it is a great idea that Eadwulf has a steam group running. Now that GW2 is coming out in a bit, maybe we can create a guild, and then put the forum's link in the guild info box or something? The guild idea for GW2 was also Eadwulf's idea, and this will probably bring in some members that play Guild Wars 2.

We need to just focus on what we DO have. Patience is a virtue. If people are willing I can try recruiting people on SWTOR. I can get a few friends of mine to come over as well. NONE of this will happen overnight

Exactly right. Do whatever you think you can in order to get people - People play different games, and can get in contact with a wide range of people. I'd recommend that everyone does their best to get a few people in - Much like we used to in the good old days.

To be fair, RS has quite a good number of RVers playing. I'd vouch that there's more RV players playing RS than the aforementioned games. Even then, that's not a reason not to go ahead and recruit people in those games.

Anyway, I capped my 1k resources at the citadel.
