It's to have ideas and make them reality.
Rebuttals?

You've figured out the purpose of philosophy.

Great example, but it goes much further than that.

Depends on which facet of philosophy you're talking about.

No...no it doesn't. The only thing you can ever know is that you can never know anything. Much less the meaning of life.

Though this discussion already has more merit than 99% of other stuff posted here...

If you want to try to make ideas reality, we have to first talk about what ideas are as well as the nature of reality.

If you want to try to make ideas reality, we have to first talk about what ideas are as well as the nature of reality.

Ideas are different for everyone. Ideas are thoughts you've never had before.
In life it is every single person's goal to make their ideas reality.

Reality is anything, and I mean anything in the broadest way possible, coming from the idea you have had.

Please believe me when I say I mean absolutely no offense to you when I say what I'm about to say.

It's apparent to me that you're not ready to have the discussion I hoped we could. You're dipping your toes in philosophy 101, and I had hoped to go a little deeper.

Such as? I do feel I am ready for it. I made it as simple as I could on that post. Also, no offence. What did you have in mind?

The big question is, who really knows what the meaning of life is? There must be some reason why every person was brought up in this world, and why we evolved to be such a knowledgeable species.

Basically, what I was getting at was a philosophical discussion on the nature of reality. I'm going to be very abstract in my following post, for the sake of argument, I ask for suspension of disbelief.

We have to ask what the nature of reality (or the ability to know something) is, before we can talk about your view of the meaning of life.

Socrates famously said, in many ways, the following: "I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing."

This is easily one of my favorite quotes from history, and one of the most true. You can't know anything, much less the meaning of life.

Now. That's a somewhat archaic and perhaps outdated view, consider Descartes. He says 'The senses deceive from time to time, and it is prudent never to trust wholly those who have deceived us even once.' In other words, think of the bent pencil in a glass of water and other illusions. Think of the doppler effect on sound. Think of a snake, that feels slippery and slimy though it is dry. All of our senses deceive us, and we cannot trust them fully. Thus, how can we possibly perceive reality in its true form? And THUS, how can we make ideas a reality if we don't know what reality is?

Anyway, I think Nietzsche would like your idea. For him, what he perceived to be art was held in high esteem and was worth doing (or creating), and what is art before art? An idea. And the mode of any philosophy is the pursuit of knowledge or truth, which is exactly what you're doing. The consumption of others' ideas leads to knowledge, knowledge to wisdom and understanding, and so on.

In short, I disagree with your idea, but commend your thought and effort.

I can see where you are coming from.

Look at it in a very biological way. Are human brains and bodies can't take life any further than an idea and putting them into our perceived reality.

Some think there really is some ominscient, omnipresent, omnipotent creator out there. I personally think it would be boring having what seems like "infinate" "power" for "infinate" "time". I put quotes on those words because they are just human ideas. We don't have the referance points for infinity, power, or time. They are just ideas we have turned into reality.

There is a schism of Buddhism that thinks our reality is clearer in our dreams. I think that's a fun idea to think about, but our reality is only what We can persieve.

We are sentient beings with the means to take our own life, however, most do not. There has to be meaning/purpose for self aware beings with the capability of suicide, or this would be different.

Everything has the capability of suicide. Unless of course you mean the actual meaning humans have attributed to suicide.

Read up on the weird bridge that dozens of dogs have thrown themselves off of, and the cliff that a herd of cows walked off...then come and talk to me.

HAHA. I will look those up. :P

I don't think any other species we know of can grasp on to the idea of...meaning, let alone suicide. We can to both, though. The majority doesn't end up commiting suicide, even with animals.

On the contrary, I have heard of dolphins being able to commit suicide, and they are very intelligent animals. Unlike other mammals, Cetaceans , like dolphins are voluntary breathers, so they can end their life at any time. Maybe some animals do have a grasp on the meaning of life. I found an interesting article on animal suicide, linked here: Do Animals Commit Suicide

Alright, enough of this. Here's the meaning of life:

Monty Python wrote:
Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try to be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try to live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations.

Socrates, Descartes, and Nietzsche were all subjects I covered completely in philosophy 101. Still waiting for you to go deeper. Or was this the depth you were talking about originally?
