I do believe it's a reference to IRL mafia games.

Members of one faction only know the suit of the mafia. Members of the town only know the suit of the town. Claiming which suit you have would be an unfair way to confirm/disprove a certain alignment (ie, mafia would not claim town using a suit as they'd be taking a guess with only a 1 in 3 chance of being right). This game's theme is obviously real life mafia (like we've had Armageddon, penguins, etc... before), and the suit/card number is just supposed to add to that. What it's not supposed to do is be a loophole with which to claim sides.

The way I was told how to play, the playing cards and suits were delt, and the suits and card numbers corresponded to a role. Probably just a theme, like sheep or boats.

Correction: In the first sentence, change "one faction" to "mafia".

Also, I had assumed suits were about faction, but it could be a teamed thing like Scar said. Still, I'm doubtful, as that would be more appropriate for a variant, not regular mafia game.

Well this could possibly be the most eventful first two pages of a mafia game, ever. Looks like mentos isn't going to allow us to have any fun at all. (Seriously? You're facebook friends with Riptide? :laugh:

Everyone has already taken the words right out of my mouth. Serious infraction against the rules. And even if he's going to play the "lol just kidding" card...why make a statement like that in the first place? I also have to strongly agree with Steely. Why would anyone start rolefishing this early in a regular mafia game?

To clear one thing up: the cause of the delay was because I needed an answer from Orangequest. I gave him 12 hours to respond or I would simply replace him with RipTide (who would not need to answer the question on Orangequest's behalf). Whether or not Orangequest/Riptide has a night action is independent of the time that elapsed between RipTide joining and the first day beginning.

Play continues as normal until I get word from RipTide about what mentos is claiming.
