I also saw max payne, it was ok

I was expecting more, but oh well, good enough.
And apparently there was a scene after the credits, which makes me wonderwhy the hell studios keep doing that trash.

I've re-thought it, I'm dropping my rating to 6/10. There was actually less action than there seemed to be - does that sound strange?

Also, I laughed at a few parts. Like when a SWAT guy randomly jumps on a table and runs along it to make himself even more of a target. And the creepy tattoo parlor guy who likes to keep a huge old book on Norse mythology on his front counter.

Also, apparently leather jackets - bulletproof, especially from shotguns at close range.

I recently saw Lakeview Terrace, which was kind of stupid. But, the more I think about it, the scarier it would be to have a LAPD policeman living next door and harassing you. Samuel L. Jackson was a decent character, I just wasn't into the basis of the plot, it seemed stupid to me.

Hidden:
The basis of the plot was that the couple (main characters) are an interracial couple, and the cop next door is prejudiced and he makes their lives hell. Liked the cop part, not the struggling interracial couple part.

Ending was decent, but ultimately, it wasn't a "theater money movie" for me. It woulda been a good renter, but I paid 7 bucks to see it. I DID get out of Nights in Rodanthe though, which I'm assuming was a good thing. :-s

Donor: Knight (2008)
Bringing Up Baby (1938)

Black and white screwball comedy staring Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

I. Want. To. Shoot. Myself.

Srsly, 1/10. It was the worst thing I have watched.

This was around the time that directors realised they could add sound to motion pictures, and sadly it is not done well. The dialogue is so much in such a small amount of time that it becomes just noise. You can't understand anything. The concept is good, and there are so many funny things about it, but they just can't get it right.

Withnail and I (1987)

Comedy staring Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann.

Second worst film in existance. It's about a couple of down-on-their-luck actors who ... something. I dunno, I lost interest half way through. All I know is that Uncle Vernon from Harry Potter appears in it, and he looks EXACTLY the same. Then he tries to sleep with McGann. :-s I dunno why.
But yeah.

3/10

Hancock (2008)

Awesome. I liked this film quite a bit. The twist was unexpected, and as with all Will Smith films, it was funny to an extent.

7/10

Taxi Driver (1976)

Crime Drama staring Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster. Was pretty good. The ending was a little messed up, and it took a little thought for me to understand, but it was good overall. I liked the camera shots that seem unique to this film; keeping the protagonist montionless and having the camera pan out onto an empty scene. It was really powerful.

7/10

Saturday Night Fever (1977)

Romantic Drama staring John Travolta.
Lets just say I spent the time dancing.
Funny, witty, interesting. I liked it. 6/10

Yes, it's been a busy couple of weeks in Media Studies.

So I actually want to watch some of those "classic" movies out there. Taxi Driver, the Godfather films, etc.

Recommendations on what to start with plz.

I'm gonna watch Heat soon though. Not exactly a classic, but it's got Pacino and De Niro in it and over half the cast are favorites of mine (especially William Fichtner).

Then Taxi Driver. I hear it's great.

Saw Pulp Fiction, it was cool. At first I watched it and I didn't get what all the praise was about but I re-thought it and I like it now.

I'll put Casino and Goodfellas down too.

You. Die. A. Painful. Death. Right. Now.

On a more serious note, screwball comedies are just about my favourite genre, and Cary is my favourite actor. Your criticism of the film is a common one however. The director (Howard Hawks) is famed for his rapid-fire, overlapping dialogue. In 1938 sound wasn't a new thing; the first talkie had been made in 1927 and the only person still clinging to silents was Charlie Chaplin (although his next film would be in sound). But the particular style of dialogue Hawks loved and Hepburn's Hawkesian woman didn't help the film and on its release it was a notorious box office failure. Katherine Hepburn became known as 'box office poison' because of it and a string of other flops.

Still...I'd heard about people like you, but never actually thought I'd speak to somebody who didn't like the film.

Tell your teacher to show some noirs, Bogie films and It Happened One Night. :D

If you haven't already...check out Raging Bull. Maybe some Eastwood if you're interested - both his work as an actor in things like The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and as a director (especially Unforgiven). You'd probably enjoy a lot of Kevin Spacey's performances in the 90s in movies like American Beauty, The Usual Suspects and L.A. Confidential. Maybe some David Lynch (The Elephant Man) if you're feeling adventurous. Coppola made a few other masterpieces apart from the Godfather Trilogy - The Conversation and Apocalypse Now. Lumet has some great 70s work with Pacino (Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico) and just generally (The Verdict, Network). Newman's death might be a good time to revisit some of his classic films (The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). And finally, not sure if it'd be your thing, but it's always worth checking out Sleuth with Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine (Caine's other 60s/70s work is also worthwhile looking at).

Tweed - Bringing Up Baby really is a horrible film. Being you, I assume you have watched it. I just couldn't understand most of the dialogue. There were some good scenes, I'll admit that; and it does have a lot of comic quality, but it just seemed like babble.
Hell, at the end I didn't even realise that (and yes; this is a spoiler. It's been out for 70 years - sue me.) his wife had left him! It just didn't come across. D: I was so confused.
It had so much potential, too. A film about an Anthropologist who gets caught up with a woman two days before his wedding and ends up chasing a Leopard across the country could have great laughs, but instead the dialogue ruined it.
We watched the Crowded Cabin Room scene from A Night At The Opera, and again I feel the same. The comic timing was perfect, the comedy could have worked, but instead you couldn't hear half of what he was saying due to dialogue getting mixed.

And Andrey - Not a 'classic' in the sense that you are thinking, but I would suggest The General by Buster Keaton

Andrey, watch all the moves Tweedy recommended. Also, after you've watched those ones, check out some of Stanley Kubrick's films but I'd suggest to only if you liked some or most of those other classics. Kubrick's films are very polarizing (with the exception of The Shining) so it isn't everyone's thing. Practically every movie he's done is a different genre, though, so odds are there's something in there you may like.

Goodfellas is a must (my favorite gangster movie)

Anyway, I recently watched Harvey with James Stewart. Fantastic! His character is probably the nicest guy I've ever seen and the movie itself is just so pleasant :D

Also watched Tropic Thunder (it just came out over here) and it was pretty funny. Tom Cruise was...he made me laugh.

Also watched Full Metal Jacket (from Kubrick) which was great. My second favorite Kubrick film, after 2001.

That's all I can remember at this late hour.

That was a wise decision on the part of your teacher to only show an excerpt since the whole movie has 5 or so opera numbers. Doubt that'd go over well in the average classroom. Pity you didn't see my favourite moment in that film at the very end though.

Classic films are a lot more talky than modern films. If you don't like a lot of dialogue, then you won't like most 30s and 40s films.

Oooh, I forgot about Kubrick, Voltage. I think yo're right that it could be a bit much to rush headlong into 2001 right off the bat. I didn't like Full Metal Jacket all that much, but I think Dr. Strangelove would be the most accessible of his works (I haven't seen The Shining so I'm not sure about that).

Oh, and I love Harvey. :D

The Kite Runner

Was a good film. I liked how it kept to the book, and didn't make too many alterations. That's something I dislike about the Harry Potter films. Interesting camera angle, and dialogue. Switching between Afghani and English was different, but in a good way.
Sadly, they seem to have cast a white caucasian American to play Amir - an Afghan boy. :S

Just watched Saw for the first time. The only thing I have to say is "Wow." The beginning was very nice and extraordinarily well played. The end was a little dull though... It became more of a stereotypical slasher film then something I could be afraid of (like the "HOLY #$%&" moments in the beginning). The ending was really, REALLY cool though; I loved the twist, although they could have elaborated on Zepp a bit more, like how he could have won the game or something.

Yeah, I loved the first Saw movie. The beginning was better than the end, although the twist made up for all of it.

Some of the acting was a bit atrocious though.

Yeah some of it was, but I was way too into the mind game to really notice it that much. It's crazy how short a time it took to produce (18 days) and still was as good/popular as it is.

As a side note, I heard that Saw V was horrible.

Not according to the topic in this forum. Anyways, I've heard and agree with the fact that the Saw movies get progressively worse as they go along. I really liked Saw I, didn't see Saw II, hated Saw III (that ribcage trap was digusting) saw the beginning of Saw IV, don't wanna see Saw V.

Too bad they still have like 5 more movies on their agenda.
