They're on the cover of Rolling Stone this month. Being a fan of 1960s music, I die a little inside whenever I see them doing something pathetic like that. :(

That illustrates it perfectly.

Rolling Stone's editor is a former editor of FHM. For the supposed bastion of rockism it isn't very rocking anymore. :|

On the pop/R&B side of the music industry, Rihanna definitely was an icon of music for this decade.

It's a Hip Hop magazine, with a lot of coverage of R&B and some pop too.

In rock, I think the 2000s will be remembered for their redundancy. Over and over songs had the same subjects: love and heartbreak. You can only take so much of the same thing, you know? That's why I've started getting into other bands like System of a Down, Lost Prophets, etc.

The fifties were more fixated on that than we can ever be.

I doubt it. The beginning of the 2000s had somewhat original roots, but then the new rap appeared and soon enough it was only about drugs and violence and then sex came in and then drugs and violence disappeared and then only sex was left and now it's all about sex and more sex and it's funny.

But then the emo skinny jeans boy bands appeared in the mainstream and it became about love and heartbreak. And sex rap stayed in the mainstream. Kinda.

Except now there's also man-voiced girls singing about kissing another girl and liking it.

If your "doubt it" comment was directed at what Zaza said about the fifties, then I'd recommend that you listen to some 50s rock. Elvis, Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers et al wrote almost exclusively on love and all its permutations. Now that I think about it, the black rockers (Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley) seemed to branch out more on their records. Of course, it should be remembered that right up until the mid-60s, the single was the dominant form of releasing music, some grand albums by Elvis and Sinatra (who released several almost-concept albums in the 50s) notwithstanding.

And that's just rock. Traditional pop and vocal pop, which were both still very popular in the 50s, were again focused primarily on songs of love.

If you were writing a review of music from 2000-2009 then you would have to include Country music. Country has become increasingly popular since the early 90's in the US and in several European countries (Ireland is a big one) and Australia. It is also much more like the old Southern Rock now than the classic Country & Western (what the heck is "Western" anyway??) that most people think of when I say I like Country music.

Isn't Western music just songs about the old West? You know...High Noon and all that.

Edit: Before somebody like Mackerel thinks I'm making a lame joke, I'm talking about High Noon the song.
