The Race is Over: Rick Astley Wins 'Best Act Ever'
Rickrolling's apotheosis came on Thursday in Liverpool, when MTV Europe settled the electoral intrigue that has been plaguing the world, and its own servers, for weeks. It passed over confusing contenders like Britney Spears, U2 and, yes, Tokio Hotel and crowned Rick Astley its Best Act Ever.
Feel free to take this time to compose yourself.
No doubt the overwhelming cultural cachet swayed MTV Europe's deranged mind. But it could also have been the online polls, which MTV Europe opened to the public to decide the winner. It could as well have handed over the award right then and there to Astley. The internet resuscitated his star; it would have no problem making it shine in Liverpool. Indeed, BestActEver.com honcho Vote4Rick, who Listening Post interviewed in October, admitted that his shadowy entertainment cabal of Astley nuts was using all manner of digital chicanery to harry MTV Europe's servers into acquiescence.
Mission accomplished, Vote4Rick, mission accomplished.
Listening Post would love to claim that we had a hand in Astley's award, so we will. We'd like to thank our parent corporation Conde Nest, as well as our parents. We'd also like to thank MTV Europe, for making these mind-numbing exercises in musical weirdness possible, and of course, the internet. Where would we be without you, internet?
More importantly, where would Rick Astley be?
That's the reality of it.
