Unless you've been living under a rock for the last week, you'll know the Crimea has been invaded by the russians. I could quite easily copy-paste a wad of text from wikipedia on the conflict, but i could just link the article instead, because i'm lazy.

Whilst Russia obviously has no real right to invade another country, since the Ukrainian revolution, there has been violence and fighting all over Ukraine. With more than 50% of the residents in the Crimea being russians, with strong views on making the Crimea part of russia, Putin IMHO hasn't yet done anything significantly morally wrong. He's protecting his nationals against a perceived threat from Ukrainian extremists. Obviously he wants the Crimea as part of Russia, and IMHO he has some right to that claim.

Your opinions?

Probably. That and no other nation will take any action against him, more than likely, unless he decides to take it further and fully invade Ukraine.

Invaded is a strong term to use, considering they have bases there and it was originally under Soviet control. Not that I support their actions (especially not Putin he thinks he's Stalin mk II).

This is probably a bit exaggerated on the analogy, but didn't Hitler just want Poland?

The fact that the I-community is sending no adequate response feels like it is "ok" for any country with "land claims" to do as they will upon those claims. I feel that it's setting a really bad precedent, but at the same time I don't really see a proper course of action the international community can make. With stakes with China, Syria, and some would even say the likes of Iran, Russia is a powerhouse in its region and as such, messing with a powerhouse isn't really a great option as we've seen in the past especially as we try to move away from a polarized society.

What about China and Tibet? The occupation of India by the Brits? The Spanish wiping out the Aztecs and stealing their land? Or most of western Europe occupying land that belonged to the Native Americans? People have been taking over places that don't belong to them for thousands of years, at least the Russians can say there's a majority of native Russians living in the Crimea, and for that reason, i believe the Russians have a decent case to make. Doesn't mean it's right or just, but in international politics, what does right and just mean?

You mean they exterminated the people living there and move Russians in to replace them like 60-70 years ago?

The US should give back Texas by that logic.

I feel that the bottom line is that the public's perspective is against Russia's actions. I mean the majority of the examples we can provide of this imperialist nature were from a time in which imperialism was seen as society's norm. That being said, as we transition to the future, society is growing more and more to reject notions of colonialism, imperialism, etc. ...well at least displays of it in the open and as such, the public outcry against Russia is apparent

"protecting his nazionals" was also Hitler's defense of invading, Poland, Czech, Australia, France, Italy...

It's just a ruse. Russia's doing this to get a strangle hold on energy markets. The situation is getting so dire that Germany has said they would rather throw their eco-laws out the window and use purely German coal than support Russia. And right now Germany is ALL about their eco laws.

This would be like the USA cutting off oil imports from the mid-east and moving purely to coal-derived fuels.

I'm curious what the argument behind this is. If anything, I think it would provide countries a further incentive to diversify their soure of energy. I know Ukraine is already looking at Slovakia as a potential alternative.

Russia, or por-Russian separatists, highly suspect of blowing a Malaysian plane from 33,000+ feet.
