My Life is a LIE!!

And now I'll explain.

I've been bouncing this idea off people now and then and here's how it goes.

You go to bed tonight, or even just for a brief nap. Probably thinking about the day, what you have to do later, daily worries etc...

Next time you open your eyes everything goes blindingly white until you can see you're in a white room.
Muffled voices you can make out something to the effect of

"Doctor! they're awake now!" And people come in, naturally, happy to see you.

You come to find out you've been in a coma for a month. The thing is, you don't recognize any of the people who are coming in happy to see you.. in fact, even your hands are different, they're calling you a different name... asking if you recognize them... of course you don't.

As things go on further, you come to realize this isn't a dream but your "real previous life" never existed and somehow generated in your mind while you were in a coma for whatever reason. Now you simply have to deal with a new life completely better or worse. It doesn't turn out to be a prank or some elaborate scheme, regardless of how you try, you can never get back.

If this is something that happened and has a document to say so, link us to read the whole story.
If this is a hypothetical situation to ask what we'd do, of course the general answer to how we would respond would be "confused as hell and" something about trying to incorporate our previous "fake" life into real life, given we know who we thought we were and not who we apparently really were.
If this is a random hypothetical to just make us think, stop spamming.

Well I don't know who you're referring to on the last bit but I can go on.

It's basically an existential thought experiment. Like as the title goes, if you found out your entire life is a lie, or rather never existed. On top of that, you're unwillingly thrown into some other life that you can't escape and have no knowledge of.

So to that extent, how would you deal with it? How similar or different could this new life be before you just couldn't take it?
And, of course any other thoughts would be nice.

I figured with the 10 active topics it would be a fun thing to throw out there.

I'm pretty sure what your real life is like would directly effect how you react to it. Would you wake up in a body that is the same gender as your coma life? How about age? You could wake up in the body of a 70 year old woman for god's sake.

What your new family is like would also change your reaction. They could be easy to get along with or on the other hand they could be incredibly easy to simply disown. Your socioeconomic status could also be wildly different. Basically some more context would be nice.

Though if you're simply asking what would happen if I woke up from a coma and had to start a new life, I'd gladly embrace the opportunity. There's certainly not much holding me in this life.

For a proper response, the scenario DOES need more context.

Assuming I woke up as a man of about the same age, only with different skin color, I'd probably just ask a lot of questions until I had figured out what happened. Hopefully I'd wake up in a better life than I had when I was asleep. Maybe I'd have a smoking hot girlfriend, haha.

But really, I've had actual dreams where I've won the lottery, had a family, made it as a writer...the disappointment would be similar if the life I lead while asleep was a good one. I'd just start over, or rebuild what *really* was.

I've actually thought about this hypothetical a lot throughout the years. Just sitting around thinking "man, what if this is all just an elaborate dream?"

Honestly, I'm not sure how I'd react. I don't think anyone could accurately answer that. I get the feeling that this "previous life" would feel hazy after waking up, just as most dreams do. So who knows if you'd even keep your emotional attachment.

With the criteria you described, not recognizing anyone or yourself after waking up with full recollection of your dream? Depression is obvious. Finding out that certain people you grew extremely attached to (possibly fell in love with??) don't exist would be brutal. But I guess it would also depend on how your "real life" compares to your "dream life"???

Like if I wake up to discover I'm this extremely handsome dude with a wealthy, loving family? IT'D BE PRETTY EASY TO ADJUST. Waking up as a girl would be pretty weird though, also/or if I'm old. But if I'm in the same or worse situation, then depression is the definite outcome. Possibly suicide? Who knows! It would really all depend on exactly WHAT life I'm being thrown into.

Maybe I wouldn't even be human?? Maybe I am really some weird alien species dreaming about being an earth human.

I like this idea. A couple of time's I've imagined that we're all just a super-advanced alien species that have hooked ourselves up to machines to make us believe we're living a human life because we've already conquered the whole universe and discovered that it's meaningless.

You have to remember that you cannot dream of something you don't know about. Meaning you would not end up being a completely different person because there are little details you wouldn't be able to imagine no matter what.

Details that fine are very few, though. For example, we don't have to know exactly how to speak a certain language to, say, picture ourselves speaking what we know it sounds like while knowing with our first language what we mean. Only those most happy with life or firmly grounded realists wouldn't be able to imagine their life as something else.

Maybe in my dreams I'm looking at the medical field from the nurse's point of view, so when I awaken I will now understand what they are going through.

Hopefully the coma doesn't keep me from practicing medicine as a doctor.

God I wish I would have went to medical school........

i dont know if id be able to handle it. if i woke up one day and i was someone COMPLETELY different. i have lot of fond or emotional memories that define who i am today. if those were all a lie.... id be devastated.

That is a scary thought... if I woke up to a completely different life, I would probably be angry, and a bit confused for a while, thinking that everything that I've ever experienced, all my triumphs and failures, was all just a lie. I would probably go crazy for a bit, then try to settle into the "new life."
