I don't think we have enough people here that check reddit daily to have that as a viable option. I'd say if we just want to keep in touch, we make an invite only facebook group. If we ever want to organize some more gaming stuff, Steam is the way to go.

I disagree with the invite only part, there rip.
Restricting access isnt a good way to progress.

On one hand, invite-only does hurt the activity part.
On the other hand, if we somehow boom and become a popular subreddit, it'll be full of le memes

That's why I said "If we just want to keep in touch." This means not expanding. We leave RV as it is, maybe have a page left over for nostalgia, but we can still go to the page and talk about real world matters and share funny moments on the facebook group as we do here now.

If we want to give RV a last little boost for activity, try to rein in some new members, Steam steam steam steam steam. We have like 400 people in the Steam group. Get a TF2 or Gmod server up and running. Make some crazy, chaotic event in something. Competitions, like we usually did in 'Scape. Maybe do one of those events where you create a new character in some game, and try to level up to the highest point possible in a set amount of time.

I understand why you want to preserve Runevillage. I really do... We have developed some rather intimate relationships with each-other over the years. I'm not sure how to classify what relationship I have with Jackstick but it exists. The same thing can be said for Jaron. Whatever relationship we have is probably not as "strong" as what I have with Jack but they likely have a stronger relationship with each-other then with me. One of these days even these relationships will fade. I haven't spoken meaningfully with Jack or Jaron in awhile now, so perhaps for me the day has already came... These relationships are what drive us to stay on the ship and motivate us to row back into port for a trip down memory lane.

These relationships are what keep us coming around but they're also a problem for any sort of rebuilding effort for the Village. To the outsider these rapports with each-other are intimidating. Anyone who experienced the RV Chat Room should see this as fairly self-evident. It's where my relationship with Jackstick first started. He was in the chat room one day and I decided to prank him and here we are now. People who weren't part of the 'chat room clique' felt excluded and unwelcomed. This chat mentality even lead to a lot of divisiveness between the 'Chat staff' and the 'Forum staff.'

Every so often a couple of grinders would keep coming back and eventually got 'in' to the clique. But the majority of people were locked out and that was for our loss. The lesson to learn from this is simple... You're not going to integrate enough people into your system. There can not be a RuneVillage, The Next Generation with all respect to Hiker. RuneVillage as an institution, a website, should elicit fond memories for you. Leave it at that.

Be willing to give up RuneVillage as a physical place and you can still preserve the community that became and defines it. I think Sah and Apple (both of whom had fantastic advice on the matter) are pointing at the right path to take. Integrate RuneVillage into Reddit. Yeah... whatever identity you have as a 'villager' will be erased but what Reddit does is give you the tools necessary to preserve the important things that draw us back here.

No one is going to adapt to us. We need them, not the other way around. So we need to be willing to adapt to them. If we're willing to do so, whatever relationships we still have can remain and you have the possibility of forming new. And that is why we're still here, right?

Dunno, Frank, I partly disagree but that's mainly because I tried Reddit and didn't like it.

I don't expect anyone to adapt to us. But at the same time, we have years worth of memories here, and I'd rather keep it around and locked than let it go entirely. I'm already on Facebook and Skype or whatever, but being there would not make up for what I would lose if RV was outright deleted.

Well I just thought of another idea to draw more people. Is it possible to put up a few indie browser games up on the site? I know a lot of people and sites like spreading there games around, and would let them be put up. Plus if there are any RV'rs who make games there could be some unique ones put up aswell. (For instance I dabble in that stuff with Game Factory 2 however still far from good) So yeah anyway its probably not to original of an idea but its a thought. :^_^:

Hi all,

I only check RV a couple times a year nowadays, so while I was aware that RV is not the booming place of discussion it used to be, I was not aware that things had gotten so bad. It was saddening to stumble upon this post today, but at the same time, nice to see many familiar names discussing RV's fate. Whether RV should live or die, I am not quite sure. What I do know is that I trust you guys who have been around as long as me (or longer) and much more active than I in recent years to make the right decision. If one of these times I try to check up on RV and there is nothing here, I will be sad, but I will understand why it had to happen. A community on some other site for the purpose of saying 'Hi' every once in a while would be nice if it does come to that.

I think that's about all I have to say about it. If RV does go away, then it has been a great 10+ years. If you just decide to downsize, then I'll be around again.
