Its a small tweak with the new 5k posts rank. It'll probably be back pretty soon, Donut would never allow post count to disappear. ;)

Let me just voice my disapproval of this change on two fronts.

1) RV's population should have been consulted about a change such as this.

2) I think it should remain because there's no good reason to remove the mention of post count in posts. It doesn't decrease spam, if anything it encourages better thought-out posts.

Nice to see people freaking out.

Now for the non-sarcastic part of the post. The removal of the post count is not permanent. If you have been around over the past few days you would have noticed that there was a contest for a change to the artwork on the "online" and "off line" parts to the area on the left side. From what I see the old art work and the new artwork interchange from time to time. This is obviously not how it is suppose to work, so that must mean there is a problem.

With that thought in mind, this is temporary.

In case anyone is still on fire, remember - stop, drop and roll.

What benefit is served by having post count on the side that the rank images don't already provide (as mentioned by Sarah)?

Also, if your rebuttal to this is "but new users won't know what ranks are which" I say we simply direct new users to the tag ranks page, or mention it when greeting them. Most new users end up PMing or posting about what the ranks mean anyway.

Some people also think post count is removed completely, it's not: it still shows in your profile and is reflected by the rank image.

Also, Henner just did this after Mack suggested it in another topic in this forum, it wasn't completely arbitrary, and it's not hard to change back in any case.

At least it's temporary. Thanks for the update, Mustang. I didn't notice the old tabs replacing the new ones.

The RV management arn't smioking anything. If you don't like it, shove your head up your rump and waddle to RHQ

Does post count matter? Does join date matter? They're all a way to say "I'm superior to you, kiss my shoes". Get rid of them and you get rid of spammers and arrogant morons

Yes yes, very tough of you. I don't see the point in this part of your post >_>

The123king wrote:

I certainly agree, they don't matter at all. However I think Join date is generally more valuable than post count. Join date provides a basis for how trustworthy a person is and make it easier for us to recognise whether they know their way around the place or not. The same can be said for post count, but that is why the rank is there.

The123king wrote:

Not really, post count maybe, join date isn't really :? "I've been here longer than you" has no basis for superiority. So what? ^_^

No, you won't. People are arrogant and spammers because that's who they are. Sure it encourages them but it's not the reason they are spammers; it's just some people's nature.

Sorry for dissecting your post but it seemed to cover most points I was going to address anyway :)

I don't see the need to change it back, but if it's temporary and an administrator decision go for it :P

What ever it is they're smoking, its doing them good. Glad to see them get rid of post counts. Visible post counts just encourage spam tbh

Good job guys.

Even though someone's postcount has no significant meaning, I'd stilll like it to be there (yes I know mustang mentioned that this wasn't permanent, but I'm just sharing my view on this)

If you go by the reasoning of "You can view it in someone's profile" then we might as well remove the location, gender and RSN fields from the side profile as well, and even though postcount holds no important meaning, I'm still usually interested in it, ofr no particular reason, I like to see how many posts a person has, and I like to gasp at Tweedy's and Cosmos's postcount

But as mentioned before, this was temporary to sort out some bug, so it's all good

I'd rather see post count than the gender line, which could just be kept to the profile. But then again I don't see why people are so bothered about losing the post count line, it doesn't do anything except make people competetive about posting, and that's pointless :|

Anyway yeah if you're worried about trust, just check the person in question's profile and you can still see the post count.

Edit: Since Mustang's cleared that up. A half on-topic suggestion here.. Replace the gender line with a simple male/female icon that's centered in the middle of the sidebar maybe? Or it could even be before/after the user's name in a post.

Because it's capped at 2000 posts (soon to be 5000, at which point the actual number really is insignificant)

And as many people said, in the other thread for the new rank, they didn't want titles such as, "Village Hero" or something along those lines because he/she just could've spammed their way there.

Try to remember every fansite I've seen has post count, there's nothing wrong with having it. We've had it for years.

In reference to post count, what I'd like changed would be having commas.

Post Count: 1,496

It's pretty insignificant when you reach 2000 too :-s

Uh, I thought this was going to be locked on more post count discussion? Oh well..

does it matter that it is capped? as the OP said, they used post count to show that the user is trustworthy, obviously if their avatar shows they have 2000+ posts then they would seem more trustworthy than say, a page, in the OP's eyes.

I still really don't see the point in a post count, as someone said it makes people competitive, can encourage spamming and we already have the rank images as an indicator of post count, what is the point in two indicators of the same thing really? I suggest keeping the rank images and then having the post count viewable in the profile, such as it is now, i honestly can't see anything negative about that, people that use post counts to judge the trustworthy-ness of a user they can do, people that really aren't bothered about post counts have a less crowded side bar and you will still be able to look up your own post count in your profile.

I don't think this topic should be locked simply because we are still talking on-topic, btw, I honestly don't see anything wrong with discussing it.

As another suggestion, perhaps impose further limitations on the location of a user? some people's locations crowd up their side profile, such as king's as an example.

I don't mind post counts being removed. I've viewed so many topics where people post pointlessly, obviously solely to increase their post count.

In all honesty, they probably still will. You could fight the other side of the argument by saying that with the lack of post count, people will post less, thus lowering what our activity looks like.

All in all, what's the argument about bringing post count back? That there's no point in it? Well, you could argue there's no point in avatars as well. They're small fun things that a decent amount of people enjoy, and that should be reason enough.

You shouldn't be worried, offended, whatever over a line of numbers in someone's post-to-post profile.

What is your argument about having a numerical post count in the first place when we already have the pictorial reference to post number in the ranks?

I wouldn't say anyone is worried about it, they just see it as pointless.
