Sounds a good idea to me. I live next to a library so would be fairly easy for me too! I guess rather than just one person dictating the books to read people could make suggestions and then vote for the next one?

I would reccomend to anyone Removed, sorry

Sorry, for the sake of no-one looking back and playing a game of bias due to it being you recommending this book, I removed the title and author.

I'm in.

I think a temporary forum would be appropriate for this.

I would be up for this over the summer since I am off school from the beginning of June until late September. I like to read and haven't really taken the time to do much of it lately, so getting back into the habit would be good.

Alright. Well I think we've wasted too much time talking about this as it is. I'll go make a topic in Lit. Soc. and post a link here.

Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give all of you into our hands."
48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

If there needs to be an alternative to using the roleplay / literary society, why not a temporary usergroup? It's not hard to manage, but easy to keep track of and won't clutter what active stories and roleplays are up. (P.S. Tim thanks for dropping outta Earl's ;) )

As for the actual idea, picking a set genre is a bad idea. However, listing what genres each user is comfortable reading (note: not what you normally or prefer, what you're comfortable enough reading to stand getting through the book) would help with sorting out who can get what books and not wind up disappointed.

Unless gas prices shoot to $4.25 a gallon, there should be little trouble getting your parents to take you to the library or book store for the books chosen.
User: Hey, mom? I have a favor to ask.
Mom: What is it?
User: Take me to the library...? Please?
Mom: *Keels over from heart attack at being asked to go there* Of course!

The last thing I see there may be to work out is the idea of compiling books and how to match people to books. This is where picking people to genres may actually be a GOOD thing. Each genre can have a number, and you can use a random number generator to match that person with a random genre. If you somehow match a person with a genre they specified they did NOT want, roll again as necessary. This matches people with a list of books that they can choose from to be comfortable reading about.
If you want to further the random rolling option to match each user with a specific book in the genre, be my guest, but I think the only restriction on users picking the books is if they pick one for how short it is or if they've already read it.

Does that sound like it'd work out for this idea? ;)

Regardless, count me in. I enjoy reading enough to consider this :D

Gas prices aren't over $4.25 per gallon in the USA?
They're like $12.60 here in the UK :(

On a more on topic note, sounds like a good idea, but I would rather not only read literature, you've got to have other types of books not just old classics like war and peace.

Not yet, give it a month the way gas prices are going. Most places have broken $4.00 around me so far though.

It looks like a good idea, once the books chosen I'll read it if I can find the time, I don't have much of a summer.

I'm going to lock this, hope Zeta doesn't mind. :P

The reason being that he made the topic quite some time ago, everyone's already put forth suggestions, and now voting is already in progress (while in this thread people are still saying "Sounds like a good idea", apparently unaware this is already in effect. ^_^;)

So yeah.
