I've posted many lengthy opinions on the subject, but to summarise it was really a combination of three things:

- The site almost always being down with technical issues. These downtimes were hours and occasionally days and were extremely common for a long period of time :(. Unfortunately, as if these weren't annoying enough, there was a large downtime which required us to move to temporary forums and the main forum to be rolled back to 2008, almost a whole year. This may be why you notice a lot of topics have last posts in 2008.

This is probably what did us the most harm, because it caused existing members who were already annoyed with the downtimes to stop visiting altogether. Some may also have perhaps just assumed the site had died, to be honest. Either way, it was a huge setback.

- Jagex has significantly improved their website and have also added the Grand Exchange to the game. In the past few years they have developed their own Game Manual and also a very active and useful forum for Runescape and non-Runescape discussion. This has cruelled all fansites. Unfortunately for us, again, this hit us harder than anyone else as our existing members were already in the process of leaving due to the downtimes.

- Removal of free trade and PKing. The removal of PKing caused a lot of Runescape players to leave but at the same time trading was a huge drawcard for fansites. With the Grand Exchange, the Runescape forums and restricted trade limits, trading on fansites is dead and buried.

So to answer your question, I believe it slowly deteriorated over the years in 2007 -> 2009 rather than just 'dying' instantly.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget that the actual site content, which was once the big draw for the website, fell hopelessly out of date. Not to say that many people havent worked hard to fix this, because they have, but the fact remains there are much better resources out there, when back in the day you could put our guides/content up against anyones.

Also to add "RSwiki"

That site is so quick, and simple to find anything you need to know about RS :smooth:
Quest guides, GE-price checking, Random info, Armour stats and the like.

I dont think its RV thats died per say, I belive it is alot less populated with "random" members.

The clan chat is active every day in game, All be it the same 20 people :awesome:

Theres just alot less reason to come to an RS fan site unless you are looking for general pictures or chat. I doubt if i hadnt been here 7 years, i would belong to any fansite with how good RSwiki is..

I wouldn't say rv ever died, I think the members started to die down and that's what hit this site the most.

Also as Ape mentioned, many rs updates have affected this site such as trade limits and the ge and a hell of a lot of damage was caused when they removed the old pking :(

This is the biggest reason.

And, like Apple said, a few of us have worked our asses off to try to fix it. But a few people just isn't enough.

(Moving this to Hiker's Campfire since it's more RV-related than RS-related)

People grow up and move on. Those of us that were a huge part of the "RV family" were 14 and 15 when we joined and now are in our 20s. I barely find time to have a social life working 40 hours a week and going to school full time.

I don't think it has died, as I use it as a social forum now to keep in touch with everyone. I almost like the fact that there aren't 9,000+ 12 year olds "TyPiNG LiKE DiZ" on here like there were back in the day.

^^ I agree!!^^

I was absent from RV for a while, and I recently returned, and I have noticed how sad it has gotten. And I'm really hoping people will put some more life into this wonderful forum.
