It was a tremendously beautiful evening. The stars were vibrant. The moon illuminated the cobble stone way as it snaked up the slope towards the manor. Manicured hedges danced as the torchlight flickered over the leaves.
Everything appeared perfect, for after all, it was Mr Markets grand ball.
The last few guests, yet to arrive, took a deep breath of the summer nights air as they took it all in, then begun to make their way towards the manor.
After climbing the last stone step, they arrived at large double wooden doors. The first guest reached for a polished brass knocker, but the door swung open before he could grasp it.
Music floated out as the doorman, in complete formal attire, greeted them. "Welcome one and all! To a night you'll never forget!"
The guests politely returned the gesture with smiles and nods as they donned their masks.
From the main room the host caught a glimpse of their true identity. And with the most subtle of reactions, one corner of his mouth slightly turned upwards in a brief smile.
With a swooping motion, the host ushered the newest guests into the main hall to join the others at the party.
For a few brief moments, Market gazed out into the crowd to silently observe all the guests. He rose one hand to call attention. The orchestra stopped. With the silence, the guests turned; their attention upon him.
"Welcome! Everyone!
I certainly hope you have been enjoying yourselves on this fine eve, as we come together to celebrate a new era! For on this night, the tides of power will, indeed, shift. No longer will the wealthy dictate the lives of everyone in the city below.
A new power, the mafia, will rise up from the shambles of your greedy existence."
With that, he took one large step into an arched nook, a bookshelf sealed the entrance, and he disappeared into a labyrinth of hidden passageways
