Just google it. I think I just used random.org. I did two lists, one a list of roles, and a list of everyone's name. Then I just matched them up. For example:

Role list comes up as

villager
villager
cop
mafia

And player list comes up

Landerpurex
topsummoner
theanimal
paidea

That would make me a villager, top a villager, animal the cop, and paidea the scumbag.

Yeah, for Chatroom Mafia games I use http://www.random.org/lists/, put each role on a single line, then I hit randomize five times (dunno why I do it five instead of one but oh well.) Then you just go down your username list alphabetically and assign the randomized roles to each person. Simple as pie! The harder part would be making sure the game stays balanced and that you don't accidentally forget any nighttime actions and whatnot. For example, if you include a roleblocker role, do not return your Detectives' investigations until right before the day starts, or otherwise you get stuff like "Villager. ... Wait, you were roleblocked. Pretend you didn't see that!!" which has happened to me on at least one occasion.

1.) Selecting who's mafia or not and who gets roles can be done with those links
Or, do what I do, if you don't mind a bit of complexity. Put everyone in alphabetical order.

Attach numbers to roles as well.
1 - Doctor
2 - Villager
3 - Mafia

Roll and attach each number to the next person in line.
Roll: 1, 3, 2

Guy is Doctor, Person is Mafia, Thing is Villager. It's kinda complex, but still what I got used to. Random.org is probably easier.

2.) It's up to the host if successful protections are mentioned in public. More often than not, hosts seem to mention them.

3.) Muted players must have it publicly revealed that they will be unable to talk during the day. A PM is both courteous and serves as a warning to muted players, in case you have a punishment in mind for breaking the mute.

4.) It's courtesy (and about customary) to tell a player (in PM) they've been roleblocked, since it saves them from sending an action that won't have an effect anyway. Not an actual rule, though.

5.) Since I hit this snag during Upick 4, keep in mind the mafia win if mafia > villagers + third party roles. Third party roles may not be on the villager's side, but they still are against the mafia as well.

6.) It's wisest to record actions as they come in, but don't send results back immediately in case minds are changed between the action's sending and the end of the night.

7.) It's been variable between hosts how one doctor protecting a person from two night kills will work. You can save the victim, or let them die from the second attack.
