What do you guys think?

I saw the growth of independent artists mainly as a result of the internet. What else?

I actually wonder about this a lot. You can hear any song from the 80s and easily identify the decade, same goes for 90s. I imagine the same will go for the 2000s, but I'm not really sure what the decade will be known from. Like Agent Orange said, independent artists have boomed because of the internet, but I don't know if that'll be the biggest thing to characterize the decade. I think it'll be the extreme level - rock got "heavier", metal got "more brutal", rap got "more thuggish", and country continued to suck more.

Bad rap, a ton of pop one-hit wonders, incredibly annoying high-pitched no-talent boy bands.

The 2000's has some excellent music, but most of it is just terrible. It's a shame, but it's the truth.

Country doesn't suck. Die Joe. Well...good country doesn't suck at least.

Indie rock (not necessarily indie in the true sense) has been a big thing this decade. Not the thing though, because times have changed and there's not the same homogeny of taste that there was in past decades (an incredibly sweeping generalisation I know, but the music market has gotten super-fragmented today).

In terms of overall music, I think it will be remembered as the decade where hip-hop and R&B came into the mainstream and began to dominate pop music. It will also be remembered for the revival of the garage rock sound, but overall as a terrible decade for rock music.

Apple, it wasn't that terrible. Bunch of good bands formed in the 2000s although this might purely be a matter of opinion. Wolfmother, Franz Ferdinand, the Strokes, Wintersun, Disturbed, just to name a few - all rock/metal and very good.

But overall, yes, I think it was pretty bad.

System of a Down made a lot of pretty good music during this time too.

Yep, forgot about them. And their frontman Serj Tankian's solo project was awesome as well.

Well it was a huge step down from the 90s.

A lot of upcoming bands that died and parted then rejoined to form another?

Well in all honesty, I think it depends on what you like.

In rock, I think the 2000s will be remembered for their redundancy. Over and over songs had the same subjects: love and heartbreak. You can only take so much of the same thing, you know? That's why I've started getting into other bands like System of a Down, Lost Prophets, etc.

Like hostile said, stuff from anticon as well. I'll definitely remember Why?, but they're pretty invisible in the music industry so they won't be remembered by many.

Besides the growth and demise of independent artists as independent artists and more and more artists with bad gimmicks, not that much is different that I can think of at the moment. I mean, we're only 8 years in

edit: I guess I forgot the scene tard music and "emo/scene" hitting the mainstream public

The Rise of the Disney Stars.

Ugh, Disney Stars. Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, High School Musical Cast... Ask any 8 year old what his favorite singer/band is, and there's a high chance he'll say the name of a disney star.

Gross.

8 and a half years is long enough to get the general impression.
