Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann takes place in a fictional future where human beings have been forced underground and thrive in isolated subterranean civilizations on Earth. These "villages" have no contact with the surface world or other villages. Since frequent earthquakes damage infrastructure, the villages must constantly expand deeper into the earth — individuals designated to this task are known as "diggers".

Giha Village is the home of Simon, a fourteen year-old digger who was orphaned when his parents were killed in an earthquake. Respected by the village elder as the best of the diggers, but ostracized by his peers, he discovers a special drill key deep in the ground, and recruited by an eccentric fellow orphan named Kamina into his group, the "Gurren Brigade". Kamina dreams of the surface world, which he visited as a child with his father, but had to return home because he was too weak to survive.

After a failed attempt at reaching the surface, Kamina is jailed by the elder and Simon resumes digging, only to discover "a big face" deep in his tunnel. As he excitedly fetches Kamina to show him the discovery, he is caught by the village elder, but Kamina's punishment is interrupted by the ceiling of Giha Village collapsing, as an enormous robot falls into the cavern. A girl named Yoko appears and tries to fight it with a large rifle, but cannot do much. Simon takes Kamina and Yoko to the "big face" he found earlier and discovers that the small drill key can be used to activate the small robot, which he uses to end up destroying the intruder, and effectively break through to the surface.

On the surface, Simon and Kamina discover there are more large robots known as Gunmen, piloted by "Beastmen", that terrorize the surface dwellers during the day. Simon and Kamina help Yoko and her village destroy three more Gunmen and Kamina takes one for himself, naming it the Gurren. Eventually, Simon and Kamina decide that they will go on a journey to end the constant struggle between the Beastmen and humans, and are initially accompanied by Yoko and a mechanic from Yoko's village named Leeron, as they head out to find the Beastmen's Human Eradication Army headquarters, while dealing with various Beastmen warriors. Just a main idea of the series anyone who has yet to see it, although I avoided anything too spoilerish. That really only explains the start of the series, so trust me when I say there's plenty more to it and it's worth watching.

To those of you who have seen it - Great anime, or greatest anime? I just finished watching it a couple days ago, and it quickly became an all-time favorite of mine.

So. I'm watching the series right now, am on episode 11

I accidentally spoiled a pretty big event for myself by reading wikipedia, and hated that I now knew the ending, however: (spoiler)
Hidden:
Kamina died at episode 8, I thought that'd be the ending or something, but it looks like it's just another beginning, unfortunately I also just found out that he'll make a reappearance in episode 26 (damn you wikipedia) but I know nothing else

Just thought I'd share this, good show

Your opening video's already broken.
On topic, I've watched it. It's a good anime, though I think there's a pending class-action suit against it (plaintiffs include quantum physics, Newtonian mechanics, and general relativity).
Jokes aside, it turned out quite well and could do with a second season.

There was one. Hence it's more than 14 episodes.

I hear the Defense Attorney for Anime was able to counter-sue under the platform of "It's Anime." and was awarded a bajillion dollars!

The second season was just as good as the first to be honest, I don't know how you could have missed it, hehe. And Jeroen, you NEVER LOOK AT WIKIPEDIA before you finish a series. Or an OST. EVERRRRRR. DUH.

I was under the impression a season constituted about 26 episodes (half a year). Either way, it needs a continuation, and not just the movies (which I haven't seen yet).

Just finished watching the last episode, I may watch the first movie, as I read it has about 20 minutes of new animation (though it wasn't clear if this is just some stuff in between, or actually added to the end)

Don't really know what the second one is about, don't care right now, this ending suits me just fine, I think a new season would ruin it

The series was as final as it could get without retconning several things. Shouldn't really get a new ending unless they did just that.

Movie 1 counts as a majority of the first season, up until the fight against the

four generals

with the final battle being very different.

Movie 2 is the rest of the series done SPECTACULARLY and is REQUIRED VIEWING for this thread. The second movie had a significant amount of changes and new animation.

I prefer Season 2's storyline over Movie 2's storyline, but Jeroen, it's totally worth it!!

No, you!

Granted, there were things about the movie that were far, far greater than the series, and I can list them off with fondness. But there were also things that only the series can do (because it has so much alloted time, instead of a quick two hours) that were way better than what the movie changed them into.

I'd like to see the second season reworked to be closer to the movie. I definitely liked the movie better, but I'd liked a lot of stuff that happened in the series better too.

Like:

Hidden:
the other pilots giving their lives for the twins and to save the ship. Also that the reason for the anti-spirals coming was because the population hit 1,000,000 and not simply because they were dumb and went to space.

screw you

Zoushi, Kidd, Ailac, Jougan, Balinbow, and Makken all deserved to live

Also seeing as how we're thinking of things that would've been nice to change/add to the movie. Ever notice how

Hidden:
Every robot had a Tengen Toppa form except Gurren and King Kittan?

Pyro's latter thing was my biggest complaint. In the series it's like "When the population reaches 1,000,000", which is totally uncontrollable and was the hotbed of conflict between Rossiu and Simon when Rossiu was dragging people up from underground. The Rossiu storyline was important, and the series did it better than the movie in making you want to hate him for what he's doing, even if understandably. The movie on the other hand was just "When you reach space." DON'T SEND A PROBE TO THE MOON DURRRRR YOU BROUGHT IT ON YOURSELF IDIOTS. Seriously...that's something they should not have changed.

It was actually when 1mil reach the surface.

Also the moon probe thing makes sense considering it was sort of based off spiral power and therefore proved humanity became more of a threat to the anti-spirals. 1 mil humans can't really do anything especially when a large majority of them don't even show/use spiral power.
