I'm probably not the only person who, after writing a huge post, accidentally backspaces or hits the back button and trashes the entire post just from that.

Solution? After any content has been written in a post, if someone backs (or even forwards, it's possible) out of the posting page, can there be a little popup asking something like "You have un-posted content. Do you want to save it as a draft?"
The responses would be yes, no, and cancel, probably, and you can guess what each response would do.

Here we have yet an other example of why firefox owns internet explorer.

I don't think a lot can be done about it, though

I have used this little trick forever (for Firefox):

Type "about:config" in your address bar.

Type "browser.backspace_action" in the filter bar.

Right click on the value, click "modify" and change it to "1".

Now when you press backspace, the page should no longer go back. This prevents you from backspacing out on RV/in RS. Should you ever want to change it back, modify the "1" to a "0".

I concur. We must lynch him now for the sake of the metagame, we MUST teach people that they can't go around claiming "anniversary" and expect leniency. Topsummoner.

Yay!
I always hated spending 15-20 minutes on a pm or post only to have to rewrite the whole thing because I am inept at typing and hit one wrong key.

It is possible with the onUnload event for JavaScript, and working with a boolean that gets set to false when one of the buttons below the post have been clicked.
It's rather complex to implement and I personally believe there are more important things to add. I can understand it is rather annoying though.

This is one of the many reasons why I've always used Firefox instead of IE.

And I use this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1694
DisableBackspaceNavigation add-on. <3

This has happened before, but I've always been able to go forward a page and find what I wrote still there.

This problem is browser-based. Dependent on the Internet Browser you use, this problem might not occur to you. (For example, Opera and Firefox both don't delete the message when backspacing.)

Whether or not the text stays when you go back then come forward varies from computer to computer. On my old computer, the text would stay there, whereas on my new computer it goes away. I like kikori's suggestion, though, if it's possible to implement.

So it's either switch to Firefox or let your messages get wiped because you accidentally hit a Backspace? I love that idea.
