I was wondering how many villagers would be interested in developing a summer book reading list that we would read through and discuss over in the RP+Lit Soc, one book at a time.

If anybody is interested, let me know mmkaiz?

You get a group of people.
Each person puts forward a book for the rest of the group to read.
The group discusses the books.

I might be interested in this, although I'm away for 3 weeks this summer so that would knock some reading time off :D

That's pretty much all I've done in the past two years of English, lol. Took American Literature Honors and British Literature Honors.

I'd be up for it :D

Wouldn't we then need to spend our own money on buying the books >_>?

You can also just borrow it from the library.

I am already planning to read some cool books, but in summer I'm going to be away for like 2 months >_>

Books I was planning to read were 1984, Animal Farm and other futuristic books...

Well to be fair, each person could chose one book to be read. We would then pull them randomly by which order we would collectively read and talk about it.

So umm... Who wants to coordinate it?

I'd love to join. I'll be gone for a few weeks without internet access, but other than that it sounds super :D

I won't offer to lead, however. Bad things might happen.

I don't mind organizing it, but know that it's all voluntary. If we come up to book that people don't like, because one person submitted it and it got chosen at random... I don't know, we'll have to create a system that ensures that we all get a book we're interested in.

How about this. Everybody who wants in, suggests one book. The book and a plot summary for it is shown to everybody and everybody can vote for the three books they most want to read, but can't vote for the book they submitted. Then we begin with the book that most people voted for, and the next one is the second most voted for book, and so on and so forth.

Sound alright?

I'd be interested in this as well, it gives me something to do over the summer other than play video games, and sleep in til like 1 pm. I'm not sure on my book yet, or if I need to suggest one yet either. Also, would we be reading some advanced level books? Such as Frankenstein, and Moby Dick? Because those would help me for my college courses I will be taking in the fall. I know you'd have to suggest and vote, but would there be a reading "level" limit, or would it be anything?

People would simply know to check the RP+Lit Soc forum.

As for the reading level, Moby Richard (stupid filter) and Frankenstein aren't terribly difficult, but I don't know if those are likely to be chosen by the rest of us.

I would say to suggest whichever book you want, no limits. But your book would be more likely to be chosen if it were, say, Highschool level reading. That way, you kinda balance nicely across Junior High to College levels. And perhaps the first book we read will be a Junior High level, whereas the second will be a College level. It's popular choice, so if it's chosen, then then the majority of us wanted to read it anyway.

This would be cool But I will be gone for almost the entire summer with no internet access but Why not Just start a Reading group for all Year round every month While discussing the book the majority choose make a poll with all the books people have suggested to read in the next month or this could be like every 2 months I dunno.

the summer thing would be awesome even though I wouldn't be apart of it.

I'd love to join in, but like Tanks I'd prefer it if we were reading literature of some form. I vote anything by Nathaniel Hawthorne. 8-[ (hehe, Quan).

One difficulty would be that somebody is quite likely to have read a book everybody else wants to read. Right now I'm slowly making my way through Picture of Dorian Gray, but I know Quan has already read it. Similarly, I found a cheap copy of Tender is the Night the other day, but since Quan recommended it to me I'm sure he's already read it. Another thing is, I wouldn't make the books too long. Moby Dick is massive...and as I don't have summer holidays, I don't have the time to plough through 800 pages. :(

Also, how about you throw some poems in there as well? Between books maybe?

Exactly. If you don't already have a library card or at least know how to get one, now's the time to figure it out. You'd be surprised, but the Library is a far better resource than the internet ever will be. Partially because people think that Wikipedia is a source, when it's not.

At the very least, http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page has a lot of the classics. I hate trying to read a real lot of the computer, though. Gets painful.

Depending on what job I end up with and some other things, I may take part in this.

I'm sure you wouldn't have to take part in every single book, so you could still take part.
