- Introduction -Every adventure needs to start somewhere. In the world of RuneScape, this "somewhere" is the Tutorial Island. This island will walk new players through the basics of gameplay, from the interfaces you'll be using on a constant basis to skills you could very well never touch again. Yes, Tutorial Island is both a great help and a great annoyance all the same, but it is certainly a useful feature of the game for new players.
This guide will give a step-by-step walk-through of the entire Island.
- Part One: The RuneScape Instructor -When you log in to a brand new account, you'll first be confronted by the screen below.
This interface will allow you to choose your character's default appearance. Choose carefully, as changing your appearance later in the game will cost you money! After deciding on your character's appearance, you'll see a man dressed in red with an arrow flashing above his head.
This man is the RuneScape Instructor, and will be the first person you speak to in that start of your journey across RuneScape. Click on him and you will engage in conversation.
The RuneScape instructor will run through the basics of the game with you. This includes interaction with NPCs such as himself, and options of the game. (The wrench icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.) Once you finish your conversation, you will be instructed to move on to the next tutor. Find the door with an arrow pointing above it, and click it. This will bring you through the door and on the path to the next tutor.
You may have also noticed the progress bar at the bottom of your screen by now. This will give you a rough estimate of how much of the entire tutorial you've completed.
- Part Two: The Survival Expert -As you walk down the path, you will come to another instructor near a pond.
As the arrow above her head indicates, you are to speak with the instructor. She is the Survival Expert of the island, and as such will be instructing you on how to keep yourself alive and well during your adventures.
The first thing she'll want you to do is make a fire. This will require a woodcutting axe (also known as a 'hatchet'), as well as a tinderbox for lighting the logs of which you'll be chopping down.
This items can be found in your inventory; the backpack icon that should now be flashing on the right side of your screen, below the mini-map. Now that you have a hatchet, you can now chop down trees. Left-click any tree near you and you'll begin chopping it down; this can take a few seconds since you're a novice in the skill of woodcutting. Once you chop the tree down, you'll have a stack of logs in your inventory.
Now it's time to make a fire! Simply left-click the tinderbox in your inventory. This will select the tinderbox and give you the "use-with" option. Next, click on the stack of logs you just cut. This will "use" the tinderbox on the logs.
You character will now kneel down and begin his/her attempt at creating a fire. This will take a few seconds, as you are a novice in the skill of Firemaking as well as every other skill. Once the logs catch fire, you should notice a graph icon flashing near the backpack icon mentioned earlier. Clicking this icon will open the skill interface - A list of all the skills currently in the game, along side your levels and experience within those skills.
Now you'll need to speak with the Survival Expert again. This time, she'll want you to fish for shrimp and, once caught, cook them over an open fire. Fishing for shrimp will require a Small Fishing Net, of which the Survival Expert will give you.
To fish for shrimp, you'll first have to look for the fishing spot. Fishing spots will look like shimmering spots near the edge of the water. This won't be hard to find, as you'll have an arrow pointing to the fishing spot. Left-click the fishing spot, and you'll begin netting for shrimp.
Once you catch some shrimp, you'll have to cook them! Either create another fire or use one that may already be lit. Left click the raw shrimp in your inventory and "use" them with a fire. You'll attempt to cook the shrimp, of which will either cook correctly or burn. If they burn, you'll need to fish more raw shrimp and try again. Once you successfully cook some shrimp, you can finally move on! Exit the gate with the arrow pointing above it, and you'll be directed towards another door.
- Part Three: The Master Chef -Upon entering the next building, you'll notice the next instructor - The Master Chef.
Speak with him, and he'll instruct you further in the skill of cooking.
He will ask that you successfully bake a loaf of bread. This will require flour and water, of which he'll hand to you after instruction.
Use the flour and the water (or vise-versa), and you'll make bread dough. Now simply use the dough on the Cooking Range within the room, and you'll attempt to cook the bread. Should you fail, get more flour and water from the Master Chef and try again.
Once you successfully cook the bread, you'll next learn about the tunes across RuneScape. The music iron will begin to flash in the bottom right corner of your screen. Click it, and you'll be introduced to the jukebox interface. As you journey throughout RuneScape, you will unlock area-specific songs. These song are stored in the Jukebox for your listening pleasure. Any unlocked songs will appear in green text, while all unlocked songs will appear in red. (For more information on the songs across RuneScape, check our
Runescape Music Guide.)
After being informed of the jukebox, it's time to move forward towards the next instructor.
- Part Three and a Half: Emotes and Running -After leaving the building of the Master Chef, you will be notified of the emote interface.
Emotes are short animations that your character will preform to express whatever it is that the emote represents. You start off with a specific set of default emotes, and can possibly unlock more throughout your journey across RuneScape.
Next, you will be notified of the running ability.
You will be directed to the wrench icon once again, but this time your focus will be directed to the running option.
If you toggle the running option on, your character will expend energy to move at a faster rate. Switch on run and head over to the next instructor, who is a bit of a ways off. (Follow the arrow on your mini-map)
- Part Four: The Quest Guide -Once you enter the next building, you'll find an instructor dressed in green and white inside.
This is the Quest Guide. He will inform you about the quests that can be found across RuneScape.
Once you finish speaking with him, you will be directed towards a ladder. Climb down to continue the tutorial.
- Part Five: Mining and Smithing -After you climb down the ladder, you will find yourself in a cave. This is where the next two instructors take residence.
Walking south a bit will bring you to your next instructor. He can be seen In a purple bandanna and pants, wielding a Rune Pickaxe.
This is the Mining Instructor. He will instruct you about the basics of both mining and smithing.
He will request you to prospect the outcrops found around him. Following the arrow, make your way over to the light-gray outcrops of rocks.
To prospect rocks, you'll need to right-click the rock. This will bring up an options list. Select "Prospect," and you'll examine the rock for ores. You will find that the gray rocks contain Tin. Do the same to the brownish colored rocks, and you will find that they contain copper.
Speak with the Mining Instructor again, and he will ask you to mine one of each rock. This will require a pickaxe, of which he will supply.
Left-click the rocks to mine them. Once you have one Copper Ore and one Tin Ore, walk over to the furnace. By using either of the ore on the furnace, you will smelt both of them together into a bronze bar.
Next comes the smithing part. Use your newly made Bronze Bar on one of the nearby anvils. Doing so will open up a smithing interface, seen below.
You will only be able to smith the items that are listed in white text - Your only option being a dagger at this time. Smith one Bronze Dagger, and you will be instructed to move on to the next instructor.
- Part Six: The Combat Instructor -By heading through the gate and following the path, you will come to the impressive level 146 Combat Instructor, Vannaka.
Though irritable, he will instruct you in the arts of combat.
First, he will explain how to equip items to your character, and explain the equipment interface. He will then give you a Bronze Sword and a Wooden Shield, remaking that your "butter knife" (the Bronze Dagger you just recently worked so hard to smith) wouldn't cut it for combat.
He will further explain the weapon interface, and then tell you to kill one Giant Rat. (Don't worry about dying here - It's impossible for you to drop below 1 HP on tutorial Island.)
After killing a rat, speak with Vannaka again. This time, he'll want you to kill a rat using the Range skill. He will supply you with a bow and 50 arrows.
Equip the bow and arrows, and attack a rat from the other side of the fence. Killing the rat may take a little while, but you'll eventually accomplish the task. (Should you run out of arrows, speak with Vannaka to receive more.
Note: You're given a set number of items once you leave Tutorial Island, so getting a huge amount of arrows from Vannaka is a waste of time.)
After defeating the second Giant Rat, you can finally go back above ground and on to your next instructor.
- Part Seven: Banking and Finances -After returning to the fresh air of Tutorial Island's surface, you will find yourself near a bank. Swing around and through the door to meet with the bankers inside.
You will be informed about the basics of banking. Take the time to bank your items if you wish, although there's really no reason to.
Through the door you will find your next instructor, the Financial Advisor.
The Financial Advisor will give insight on a few ways to making money throughout the RuneScape world.
He will inform you of monster drops, skills, etc. Once you finish your chat, you can move on to the next instructor.
- Part Eight: The Chapel, Prayer and Friends -As you follow the path, you will come to a beautiful chapel. Inside is your next instructor, Brother Brace.
This kind monk will enlighten you on the use of Prayer, and introduce you to the list of prayers found by opening the silver star icon on the right side of your screen.
He will also inform you that he is the Community Officer of Tutorial island, and inform you of the Friends/Ignore lists.
Once you've learned all you can about Prayer/Friends/Rules from Brother Brace, it's time to exit the chapel and head to the final instructor!
- Part Nine: The Magic Instructor -Terrova is the final instructor of Tutorial Island. (Phew!)
He will teach you about the basics of Magic, and introduce you to the list of spells that can be found by clicking the spellbook icon.
You will find that magic requires the use of Rune Stones. Terrova will give you some Mind and Air Runes, and instruct you to cast Wind Strike on the level 3 Chicken found in the cage.
After doing so, speak with the Magic Instructor once more. He will then ask you if you're ready to journey to the mainland.
Select yes, and he will give you some final tips before you're thrown into the real game.
You're now in Lumbridge, the starting town of RuneScape! Enjoy your adventure!
