For most of his school years, Ippo worked at a fishing shop with his mom. His dad is dead, and he constantly gets picked on at school by bullies. He has opportuinities to make new friends, but he cannot get aquainted due to having to work. One day, he gets stopped by bullies, and gets beat up. Suddenly, a person passing by happens to see this happening and prevents the bullies from doing anymore damage to him. Ippo passes out. When he wakes, he looks to see that he is in a boxing gym. As he left, he started crying due to himself allowing the bullies to say things about his mom. Takamura, who was the onlooker gives him an opportunity to hit the bag. The first time he hit it, they thought it was very nice for his first time. The second time when Takamura shows him the correct form, Ippo blows the sandbag away and tears the skin straight off of his knuckles. Everybody is amazed with the power Ippo contained. He began reading more about boxing. A few days later he asked Takamura if he could be a professional boxer. Takamura had gotten angry, saying that doing that isn't easy at all. Ippo broke down, and said "Takamura.... How does it feel to have power?". Takamura then decided to give him a chance, and said that he had to hit a tree to make the leaves come off, then grab 10 leaves. Ippo was suprised as to how fast Takamura did it. Later, when he showed Takamura, Takamura was amazed. Ippo managed to do it with one hand. He joins the gym and faces an opponent named Miyata Ichiro. How will the match go? Watch Hajime no Ippo!
