As suggested by out gracious prior host and with my pleasure, I am designing this game of Mafia with a holiday theme in mind. As the name "Secret Santa" suggests, there will be some element of gifts (items) involved. In an effort to make the game enjoyable as possible, I want to get an idea of how strong a factor items should be. I will initially take an average of all the votes, but I will also take opinions and comments into consideration.

(1) Minimal mode: Items are essentially flavor clues. At best, players will be able to speculate on information based on the flavor text related to items.

(2) Scarce mode: Items exist but in an auxiliary sense. Some may be tied to a player's role or abilities but it's highly unlikely that they can be created or traded too often. (see Keymaster from last game)

(3) Integrated mode: Items are seen and heard of quite often. They may be connected to certain abilities or information, but the flow of items is largely constricted. You'll be lucky to find someone to trade with. Crafting is rare.

(4) Collectible mode: Items are prevalent and influence the dynamics of abilities and the spread of information. However, the specifics of items remain mostly limited to those who come in contact with them. Trading is limited, crafting is uncommon.

(5) RPG mode: Items are the core of the game. Abilities and information constantly revolve around items. Everyone will almost certainly be in contact with items. Crafting and trading are the simplest of actions.

- Crafting refers to the generation of items not directly related to a role. For example, the Keymaster doesn't "craft" Keys and then gift them out. He visits a player who receives a Key. A Bodyguard could actually craft a Vest or something.
- Trading refers to the exchange of items through visits or other mechanics.

Thanks, but I don't play forum Mafia games anymore; I just watch them.

Also J, Tweedy, Steely, Henry, bluecoat, and mentos haven't been seen in ages, so no luck there. Applequest expressed in a previous thread that he doesn't have the time to devote to the games. You'd probably have the most luck with the first four on your list.
