This is the second mouse I've had for this computer, and it's currently encountering the same problem as the first one. When I left click, it treats it as a double, sometimes triple click. For example.
Go from a topic in Minecraft to the Board Index.
Right click Pictures & Videos.
Left click "Open in new tab", try to get up to General Chat. Lolnope, it opens Pictures & Videos.
Click the Back button. Now I'm on the Minecraft topic.
Click the Forward button. Pictures & Videos.
Click the Back button. Minecraft topic.
Forward button. Pictures & Videos.
Back button. The FIRST page of the Minecraft topic in question.
Forward button. Second page of the same Minecraft topic.
Tried again. Pictures & Videos.
Back button. The first page of the Minecraft topic.
Forward button. Board Index.

I'm certain I can't be the only person who's encountered the problem, and the suggested solution of "power down the mouse and click a ton of times to drain whatever charge is there" ain't solving it. Not that I'm bothered, a new mouse isn't expensive, just wondering if anyone knows why the hardware gets stupid like this.

I used to have this problem. Then I slammed my mouse down in a fit of rage. Now that button doesn't work at all.

Oh man Jan, you just got zinged by Riptide. How much does THAT suck?

Well, statistically speaking, slightly more than a giant suckusaur. A dire one.

I've never had that problem.

But your first two steps and initial problem can be fixed by middle-clicking the link instead.

Well in my experience it's because the contact points over the spring that holds the external piece of the button in place actually get worn down over extended use, causing the tolerance to be reduced with the end result that the external part of the button (the piece that you actually have your finger on) doesn't retract far enough from the button itself and ends up resting on it. In that case there's no way to fix it. This may or may not be your problem.

I'd have guessed a bit of lag.
Or you've worn down the components within the mouse.
If you're using Whatpulse, use it to track the life of your mouse and see if it matches a number of clicks the mouse states.

Already tried the Whatpulse trick. It's confirmed I can triple click via one single press of the button.

I'm going to guess component wear on an old mouse.

I've never had that problem, but the mice that I seem to use with my laptop seem to keep not working with it. They work with other laptops of the same brand, or even Macs, but not with mine for some reason.

I've been through i think 4 difference mice so far. Joy

the little plastic stick can wear out. They make these things to-cost these days. If you absolutely love the mouse, sometime you can superglue on a plastic piece to fill in the distance that was lost from wear. Usually it's easier to replace the mouse though.
