Any idea why this happened? Maybe Jagex doesn't like short names anymore. Or could the name have been taken by someone else? It's been 1287 days since I last logged into that account.

Two guesses:
1) You're right; Jagex doesn't allow short names anymore, or
2) Maybe someone wanted it as a display name and since you haven't logged on in ~3.5 years they let the other guy override you? However--that's only doable by members, and seeing as how i7 is not currently on the high scores list, I assume this isn't the case. It's probably #1.

That's a neat dialog box, though; probably pretty rare to see.

Don't f2p players get to change their name once? Or only those that had a suggested name at first.

They changed the rules for names. It was a few years ago. If I'm not mistaken, they changed the rules regarding passwords at the same time. No more easy to guess passwords, no spaces in passwords etc.

What I want to know, is how other players saw you. When they right clicked, did they see your name as: #Player972?

They started freeing up the display names of inactive accounts shortly after releasing the display name/name change system. I dunno what their definition of an inactive account is time-wise, but that's probably what happened.

We could test it if you're super interested. I didn't enter a new name, and if I try logging in again it gives me another #Player ID.

I've logged onto an account i haven't been on for more than 5 years and it also told me to change my name. It wasn't a short name as i had 12 characters. Ten without spaces
