I think any game with an element of mystery to it is guaranteed to be somewhat fun. Paidea's insanity mafia game was simple in mechanics (voting was just wonky, and somebody was a lightning rod), but the label of "insanity" and the lack of knowledge made things way more exciting than a normal game. It's the same thing that provides the draw to upick, except with the logic required for success in a normal game thrown in. I abuse the crap out of mystery whenever I run tabletop games; half my Dread campaigns, I don't make any attempt at giving justification for the horrific events that take place. It just drives people.

That said, I love vanilla mafia games with basic roles that are known at the start of the game.

I just had an idea, why don't we do some kind of awards system in the post-game period? I'm not sure how it could work but I was thinking of these awards:

Best Player, Best Newcomer etc.

These could be decided on a vote by all the players of that round of mafia, or by the moderator.

(I'm guessing mafiascum et al already have this kind of system in place, but haven't checked yet.)

EDIT: I'm totally calling dibs on the walking dead themed mafia.

So respect can be damned, in this case I don't care if it's lost.

Except when it isn't against you, you're all for it. :?: Remember neighbors mafia?

Though that game was designed to test the true allegiance of each player, the discussion that happened in the open within the thread was supposed to go on outside the thread, between neighbors.

Except no one posted their entire PM, you (and subsequently everyone else) went about using every shred of information within your PM to root out the mafia in the game. Which wasn't how it was supposed to be played, but no one could have known that so I threw up my hands and said "woops". As I said, I consider the role PM to be part of the game and as such, in cases such as neighbors and this game, it can and should be able to be used to its fullest extent. And that's what I did.

Except we totally overlooked Jack's rule/s.

Posting your PM in its entirety is a Fuzzy Bunny thing to do, rules or no rules. I will paraphrase my PM all day, but would never consider posting it word for word. Either way, it could be faked, but deducing a flavored role PM as real or fake once 'quoted' is easy.

What's more, as pointed out by blue shortly after your rant, you could have easily poked some big old holes in my argument. Namely, that everyone received the information I was using to condemn you.

In terms of ragequitting, meh. There have been games I've been in where I went down in flames as mafia. I would never quit entirely, or 'ragequit', but when under full assault of someone with good logic and serious tenacity, it's hard to defend oneself. There comes a point when enough is enough, but generally, as mafia, just staying quiet is way, way better than freaking the hell out and essentially giving yourself up.

This. Would be a load of different factions, with traitors and allies and all of that. I'd be happy to try hosting it in the future.

and @Lander/Kikori, since I was the one screwed over in Neighbours mafia by the PM wording... At least I didn't have a massive meltdown like Kikori. It just spoils the game.

You were screwed more so by the fact you were the only person without a neighbour, fingering you as the Godfather.

Yup, this is only my second game of mafia. I was pretty surprised when I got the mafia role again. I wanted to be town, but I do like the twist of being possessed.

Here's an idea: Social contract not to use role PM flavor text as evidence.

Because in every other tabletop rpg (which this basically is), that Fuzzy Bunny is called "rules lawyering" and it's considered Fuzzy Bunny behavior. It's where you abuse mechanics for the sake of winning, read too much into rules, twist words, etc, and it really annoys players who are just playing to have a good time with friends (as well as hosts/GMs, who are really the only authority on rules when it comes down to it). Don't make a rule against it, because the rule will be interpreted weird. Don't get into the specifics of it, because then it'll never happen. Just agree to not use flavor text not-available to all players, and keep it at that. End of story, pick the next host. Because some of us play mafia to have a good time and get away from all the rules lawyering that comes with traditional tabletops.

I looked through that entire damn topic about a month ago just to make sure this was or was not a parallel. The only time I used out-of-game information to make a lynch was on Godders when he asked "What's a mason?".
It's partially a parallel, and I say "partially" because we have answered it before, used it in game before, referenced games with it before, and the answer was as easy to obtain as it was to search for. That's a hell of a big difference between not knowing something that's been brought up to learn about time and time again vs. having to work with something new and customized for the very first time.

So Henry's lynch: No neighbor, he's a threat. Seems kinda in-game to me. :?:
Godder's lynch: "What's a mason?" Partial parallel--he was an idiot for asking it, described above.
Scar's near-lynch: You're pulling something out of your ass if arriving at the conclusion of "Scar = Mafia" is using role PM wording as opposed to confirming mason groups with each other between the neighbor / mason communication lines.

So try again, Lander.

... Good try. No sarcasm. But I didn't see then, and don't really see now how it would've saved me. The fact that I thought I was the only one who knew the Demon would win on a 100% population control already put me under heavy fire as a possessed player, possibly the demon. I suppose best case scenario I would've been able to claim possessed villager and ran with it for a few days. So yeah, giving up as readily and violently as I did does feel a bit stupid now.

  • The game I want to host has never been done before (because I made it up). It also relies heavily on deduction and figuring out what's going on, and two games so similar should probably not be played back-to-back.
  • People have been wanting a Vanilla game for a while now and my game is not that.
  • Lander comes before me anyway.

If you still want me to host in a few months, I'd be happy to do it, but now would probably not be wise.

Lander said earlier in this thread that he won't be around for a week or so to do his game, hence calling you up.

I would be happy to try my hand at hosting, but I've got a boatload of work to do in the next two weeks and can't commit the time.

All right then, I'll host the next game.

It starts right now.

I'm the only Mafia, and I'm also a Jester.

Beginning of Day 1

It breaks down like this:

I am leaving town on April 24th, and will not return until late April 29th.

I could open a mafia signup thread, but the game would absolutely not be started until after the 29th. It would likely be started on the 29th or 30th.

This game lasted almost a month, and though I don't expect mine to last that long, it is possible. Eight days is not near long enough for a game to happen.

If you all are ok with waiting two weeks to play again, which probably wouldn't be such a bad idea, I'll open a discussion topic, bag out the specifics of my VANILLA game, and get back to you in two weeks' time.
