First before I go into this I know my sleep pattern is not exactly normal but I really cannot be bothered to do anything towards fixing it as I'm used to it now.

I sleep on average less than 6 hours a week counting all of my random dropping off for an hour etc, This is because of a few "Quirks" that I've accumulated over the years and I actually really like being awake for so long because I get to see a lot of interesting things happen, I get a whole lot of work done and I'm always available for people to talk to about videa games.

Randomly popped into my head to find out if there were any more people that have a similar sleep pattern or are just the complete opposite.

6 hours a week? I doubt that's good for your health. I sleep less than the average person (4-5 hours a night). Have you got insomnia?

I had insomnia up until a couple of years ago, when I finally realized that it was going to get me kicked out of university. I was stressed, and the insomnia that I had been dealing with most of my life was basically keeping me up to the point that I would sleep through morning and afternoon classes. Also started to lose my short term memory; I started wandering places, and wouldn't remember why I needed to go there. After getting put on academic probation, I finally saw a doctor about it.

Thing is, if it's not bothering you then it's not insomnia. It annoyed me for years, but until it was impacting my life it wasn't a problem. If you ever get to that point, there are things that can help.

It doesn't bother me mainly because I've been able to work around it and fit not sleeping a lot into a kind of screwed up schedule, only being in college 2 days a week does help a lot and also being semi self employed

I find it hard to believe anyone can function on that little sleep.

My sleep schedule used to be somewhat normal, but since ~4 years ago, i've turned into a night owl, usually up till 4am and sleep till 1pm. I think its also had an effect on my tolerance to brightness.

This is the Insomnia Severity Index, and it's a pretty good diagnostic tool for sleep problems. You might want to give it a look and check out the score you get. Could be moderate insomnia, could be subthreshold. It might end up helping you decide whether you want to see a doctor about it, because in the end it's not a problem unless it's causing problems.

I used to sleep about that much a week, but the insomnia wore me out after some time. I've had prescription sleeping pills stronger than over the counter, but after a week my body adapts to well any drug and it has no affect on me. Now I force my self to sleep between 4 and 6 hours a night. Some nights I wake up feeling like I slept 1 hour and others I feel like I actually slept for the 4-6 hours. lol

The sleeping pills they put me on... well, they weren't actually sleeping pills. They were an old grad of anti-depressants that I could set my own dose on and only had to take a few months. They basically reset me so that I could produce melatonin when I needed to.

Some people take melatonin pills about 30 mins before bedtime. And it puts them right to sleep.

That's only about 50 minutes per day. :?: Are you guys sure about that? You're awake for more than 23 hours per day, every day?

The pill was amitryptaline, and it's an older grade of anti-depressant (tricyclic). It's one of the only ones still regularly prescribed since SSRIs came out. No one knows for sure (that I know of) the way it works, but it seems to get your brain back on track for synthesizing melatonin. It's got some side effects that can be pretty annoying though, so I'd talk to a doctor (which you should have to do anyway). I was able to set my own dose though when I took it, so I worked myself up to 10 mg. Your doctor might not let you do that though, so just do whatever they tell you.

As far as melatonin goes, I know some people that it works for... but I think it's a placebo. If it works for you, awesome. But if you want to maximize your chances of it working, try to take it in the dark and don't turn on any lights.

I worked third shift in college for three and a half years and that really Fuzzy Bunny my sleeping pattern. Combine that with currently working for Walmart with open availability, and sometimes I will work until 10 or 11 at night and have to be back in at 8 or 9am.

So for 3.5 years I worked twice weekly from 12am to 7:30am. After the first semester of doing this I learned to schedule my classes around my work schedule, as the job was a godsend. Currently I sometimes have trouble getting to sleep and I typically undersleep on workdays, especially if the schedule was made idiotically, on days I have off I oversleep. It's not at all healthy but I am afraid of becoming addicted to sleeping aids, as I had a friend who became reliant on them. I don't have health insurance so going to the doctor isn't an option yet.

I also find it almost impossible to believe that people can survive on 5 hours of sleep a week. But I know first hand that your body can and will adapt to what you need of it. If you repeatedly get 1-2 hours of sleep a night but still need to go to work a full shift, it won't be that bad after awhile. I've known people with very hectic lives who snatch a few naps a day at a few hours and that's just how they get by.

That said, I agree with bluecoat. If it isn't a problem, no reason to do anything about it. But always keep in mind that you should see a doctor in case it becomes something worse, or if it is an indicator of a larger problem. You shouldn't have to mold your life around your sleeping pattern.

Generally I'll be up for 2-4 days and then sleep for a few hours

Never had insomnia. Usually get 7-8 hours a night, with some rare occasions that i get 4-5. Little sleep is probably bad for your health, even if it affects nothing else, though.
