Most of those strike me as particularly unsuitable.

I really like the sound of jacksticksstickemporiumgaloreandmore.com though!

(or thevillagechronicle.com :shifty:)

Why not have some URLs with the word forum in there?
Cause that is our strong point.

How about we change the name on the site itself but still leave the URL the same so older villagers can find it?

We could just have the old URL redirect to the new one.

Probably an added cost to keep that and get a new URL but that shouldn't be a big deal. Will have to discuss it with the service provider.

Also I just noticed something: The titles that are connected to our post count. Maybe we should change those as well?

What about

JustAVillage.com/us/net/etc
MyLittleVillage.net/us/me/etc
VillageGames.co/org/me
WorldVillage.co/me
LostVillages.co/net/me
SimplyAVillage.com/co/net/etc

I feel any of these could be used well depending on how we rebuilt the site and revamped the sort of content we would generate. Once i'm back in the world of a college student I can contribute regularly and relax some of the tensions of who is going to contribute this mysterious content we want but refuse to create. <-<

Depending on the route chosen, a site rework is likely in order to enforce the refocus of the content. Right now we still have the same general look as when the site was first created... I think it's time to move on from that. I don't really like the design chosen for pyro's site so we'll have to decide what kind of content we will actually be capable of providing, granted we change the site name and continue to provide a full page front. Perhaps providing so much content pulled directly from the forum isnt the best option since, as pointed out, it's redundant. We just have to find content people are willing to contribute which will be relatively easy to gather and not so much a stretch to post.

Since there isn't that many people around regularly posting, the site's management will need to contribute to posting until more people join and are willing. There seems to be a lot of finger pointing here as to who is going to do work. :P I've noticed that in my time here. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and do it yourself.

Do some research and see what kinds of content people go for - even if its not entirely game related. Right now we just need to figure out where we're going to aim.

The idea, from what I remember, was to just make a broad spectrum of gaming related updates news etc on the front page to grab gamer attention. Obviously that didnt work. Perhaps something we actually have the time and workforce to maintain will work. There has to be a way small sites managed to get big over the years - runevillage had a boom as runescape boomed. We can't/don't have the luxury of using a successful site/game as a crutch anymore. x.x

I wish I was out of this damn place so I could contribute more. I'm relatively useless now outside of discussion and suggestions that come to me in my cell.

o.- Jack - Kindly add me back to the web team so I can review some things? :3 Appreciated.

Ive held off on posting because I was hoping someone else would, but it doesnt look like thats happening. Maybe the outrage is going on behind the scenes, but in what world is this situation acceptable? Oh right, this is RV, the owner disappearing for months at a time is standard operating procedure. We love you Henner, and we completely understand that you have many things going on in your life that make RV far from a priority, but given that, why oh why was the decision made to hand over the site to you? Poor ownership was one of the root causes for RV's continued decline, and just when the site got the opportunity for change, its just a complete reprise. I would be legitimately upset if it werent already far too late, instead its just another entry into the comedy of errors that has been the last 6 years at RV.

It's about some time that someone said it.

.. I don't think you have to change the name, to be honest. Change the feel of this place.
The feel of this place is so strongly associated with the game -- the game some grew up with and grew out of, the game that some discovered the game and lost interest, and those who continue to play. The "old tavern" feel of the entire forum has had it's time and needs to be lost to rediscover the new and potential this community has. It's a solid group of people, you're all so strong and dedicated. There's a lot to be said on how great a lot of you are, and how strong

Maybe the reason this site never really flourished is because the site itself never really changed, even when it tried to. It would be like opening a store and putting little effort into drawing people inside -- you'd see some people come through and browse, and some loyal followers but you'd never develop that core group that keeps forums alive. It is possible because some of our old competitors are still doing it, with various levels of success. Runescape itself progressed by adapting, why didn't Runevillage?

It had everything it needed yet in the end needs to grasp on to the future.

Personally, I think our first step should be to delete the main site. No one looks at it, it's an ugly shell of the RV2 that we had envisioned, no one cares about our outdated newsposts, and no one looks at it. Our newsposts aren't useful to anyone, not when Reddit and Facebook have that information up in a matter of seconds, and every gaming blog has an extensive article on it in under an hour. Replace it with a Wordpress or Tumblr page, and encourage everyone to post whatever the Fuzzy Bunny they want. Do you have a short story or a new drawing you want to share? Because I'd much rather see that on the front page than a newspost about the Guild Wars 2 release date that the rest of the internet is already talking about. I keep up with Jaron's site way more than the RV main page, and I recently bookmarked Goten's site as well. Why? Because they have original content that I actually enjoy reading, in small-to-medium-sized posts on a simple and streamlined site. And reading their stuff is fun. We've always been a site that prides our self in our great community... but our main page, the first thing that new users see, is the most cold and impersonal part of our site.

Also, ditch the name. "RuneVillage" was a RuneScape fansite that died some time late last year.

Including forum in the name limits us from really ever having a FrontPage again even if we found a new niche. I dont think the url should feel limiting.

We can have "forum" in the URL and still have a front page. :P

I've been window-shopping for the past few days. I think WordPress would be ideal for us. It's free to start, but we can upgrade the account to WordPress Pro, which will give us more freedom and features and stuff.

There are some really nice layouts too, and they're very customizable. We're not going to need a very complex main page, so I think this is the route we need to go.

To really use WordPress to its fullest extent will cost us some money. I estimate around $175 if we want to upgrade to Pro and purchase a nice layout. Normally I'd volunteer to create our own design from scratch, but I have confidence in what WordPress can offer us.

That said, it's not something that I can afford right now. I don't even know how I'm going to buy my textbooks for this fall. Maybe we can gather donations towards the new site.

This is the main page design for Pyro's site, for those who haven't seen it.

I tried to keep it simple, clean, and modern-looking. Personally I think I did a pretty awesome job on it, and in an ideal world the RuneVillage page would have a similar layout (with a different color palette and details, and maybe with textures). But we can still manage to find a great layout if we use WordPress.

I know I just like got here 5 minutes ago, but I thought I'd chime in.

How much does web hosting typically cost per year anyways? It can't be more than, what, $250 a year?

I am gonna offer my two cents here, and hope that.. well - no. I know the remaining ones among us are mature enough to handle criticism and a debate like reasonable adults; which i think everyone will agree is what you all have grown up too be. I will firstly acknowledge the immaturity, lies, and child'ish attitude i brought to this site when I joined in 2003. I had recently began to play Runescape and visited Runevillage almost every available opporunity. I was 12 when i first joined the Village.. and made some fantastic friends. But i have to be honest - i rarely ever used RV for guides. Tip.It's guides were always far more superior in my opinion. We thrashed out a few brilliant guides when the Guide Writers forum agreed on a specific format. But they were few and far between. RuneVillage has and always will be about The Pub, the hub of this fansite.

I am now 21, and find myself clinging to a fansite that i can just not let go of. That being said, the first time i visited after 3 years of inactivity was to find out that were - inactive and pretty much at rock bottom.. What a sad state of affairs! Whether or not it is my outlook on life, outlook on people, or just my approach to situations. But what happened with Hiker, happened. Why dwell on the past?

The village has proved to be my escape for nearlly a decade, nearlly half my life. And i have to say at this point: I do not agree with changing our name. Granted - my opinion probably will not matter, but when I think about Runescape, I think about Runevillage, and thats something I dont want to disappear because of one individual.

Establishing the facts..
- The main-site can be discarded. Noone uses it, RV2 was a crux to establish activity which was already dwindling*.
- Trying to establish ourself as anything related to RS is fickle - RSWiki is the Bible for Scape,
- Trying to establish ourself as a 'gaming' community, fickle. We probably wouldnt make it into the top million of gaming fansites out there.

Im sorry to say, but this community is no longer what it once was (no crap Malkin?), but dreaming that it will ever make itself back into an active community is also fickle. RuneVillage was created for Runescape.

My two cents is that a Forum and Chat Facility should be created as a hang-out for Villagers old and young alike. Not with anything specific in mind, just as a place that you can:
- General Chat
- Game chat
- etc

A hangout for all us guys that dont want to loose contact with each other would be the best way forward - im sure that would be far more manageable and affordable. Keep RuneVillage.com there - and lets make together a dedication page to what it used to be for old villagers that visit and want to speak to us all again..

I dont want to see this community disappear.. I remember always looked up to AppleQuest, and A5Chow, there example and Runescape achievements were epic.. Halley92 was and always will be my closest RS Friend. There was laughs with Faz, and Tal.. TanksandGuns. Jackstick, Jimmybe, Blackmage.. There are so many names I could put here that are RS/RV Leg-ends. And the option should always be there for that community to interchange.

First off, if we're becoming an actual general gaming site we need more game related events, and to advertise them. Like most people on RV, I don't have money I can throw around when I want. However, over the years I have accumulated a few games that are multiplayer. Dungeon Defenders, Garry's Mod, Half life 2, TF2, Tribes Ascend etc. All of these games have a fairly large playerbase and are all equal opportunities. I'd gladly help the RVET get some of these up and running, and if need be, advertise.

I donated $120 two weeks ago but it went straight into Henner's PayPal account. If you can get that from him somehow you're welcome to use it on whatever you think RV could use.

I personally dislike WordPress, though it is admittedly easy to manage and set up. I just don't want us to look like a free site after so many years of trying to stand apart.

I agree with just a chat and forum, i guess. We really dont have anything to offer on a full page. X.x

Welp, I've refrained from posting in this thread for some time for a number of reasons, but the bottom line for me is that I am welcome to almost any and all change that could be brought to Runevillage. I will help out and lend a hand wherever I can, but as the years roll on, my free time dwindles. As does my will to commit that time to projects at RV to no helpful ends.

We continue to plan and carry out events with the RVET when we know for a fact that only 0-3 people will participate. This is the side of me that refuses to let go of the site, and to either stay aboard the sinking ship or see it repaired and return it to its course.

The very bottommost line is that we need to attract a lot of new members. Among them, people who will participate in our events, become part of our community, post on the forums, donate to the site, and generally help out around here (coders especially).

I am 100% on board with anything that anyone is willing to try to make this happen.

In short, IDGAF whether we change the name on our site, the content, the whatever. But we're stagnant, and we have been for some time. I've been an advocate of change since the incident. Let's Fuzzy Bunny do it already.
