Aragorn tried to make his case as a roleblocking Villager, but soon enough a majority was reached, he was led to the gallows. After his death, the remaining Villagers searched his pockets and found a sharp black knife--could it be? Yes! They'd gone three for three, and cleared the scum out of their town.

Aragorn Ix - Mafia - Lynched Day 3

They warily looked around, hoping that the world wouldn't change again just as they'd claimed victory. But when it didn't, a sigh of relief went up from the remaining four. Perhaps now they could get back to rebuilding the Village that had once been such a safe haven.

Game over - Village wins

~~~
Act I player list:
Market Man6 - Insomniac
Scar - Mafia
Aragorn Ix - Normal Villager
Dr Henry - Medical Student
Topsummoner - Detective
Tahu 1000 - Normal Villager
Monk Basher - Mafia
Riptide - Doctor
Landerpurex - Normal Villager
Act II player list:
Market Man6 - Normal Villager
Scar - Normal Villager
Aragorn Ix - Mafia
Dr Henry - Doctor
Topsummoner - Medical Student
Tahu 1000 - Detective
Monk Basher - Normal Villager
Riptide - Mafia
Landerpurex - Mafia
~~~

You guys have already figured most all of it out, so there's not really much for me to say here. :) I'll just give my opinions on what went down, I guess?

Act I was heavily biased towards the Village, yes. When I originally came up with the idea for this game, my plan was that in order to advance to Act II, the Village had to win Act I (and I didn't want a reoccurrence of the last mafia game I hosted, where lazy people let the Mafia win). After the game had started, I realized this was a dumb idea and we would play Act II either way, but by that time everything was already set in motion. Sorry, Scar/Monk Basher! I MUST SAY, though, that you two did an outstanding job. If Top hadn't been there to release his findings, I think you guys could've diverted attention for that final day and won the whole thing.

Although I feel Act II was still balanced, it was harder to do so for a number of reasons that went through my head, and here's a handful of them:
  • The Mafia (as a team) were allowed to roleblock each night in Act II (but not the same person twice in a row.)
  • The Mafia would immediately know at least one power role, because it would just be the Act I Normal Villager that wasn't Mafia with them in Act II. This turned out to be Tahu, who they roleblocked Night 1. They could kill him, of course, but this would have been very hard to explain away when Lander or Aragorn failed to be killed Night 2.
  • It was figured out fairly quickly that the three people who were Normal Villagers in Act I were either power roles or Mafia in Act II. I expected that this would draw attention away from the Act II Mafia member who wasn't a Normal Villager in Act I (randomly chosen to be Riptide), allowing him to slip under the radar near the end of the game.
  • I couldn't remove many power roles from the town, purely because the Normal Villagers in Act I *had* to be Mafia or Act II power roles. There needed to be enough power roles such that they weren't all automatically Mafia.

From my outsider's point of view, these are my thoughts on how the game played out:
  • Act I Mafia: Excellently played. If you'd hit Top in a nightkill I think you might've won it.
  • Act II Mafia, night phases: Excellently played. By Lander claiming Medical Student, they could ensure the real Doctor would protect the real Medical Student, leaving them free to roleblock Tahu and kill someone entirely unrelated. And in Night 2, Aragorn's successful roleblock caused Scar's death.
  • Act II Mafia, day phases: This was your downfall. When Lander first posted his logic and then a vote for Tahu, I thought that would be the dead giveaway that Lander was Mafia and Tahu was not. Obviously it's not that easy to take for granted in-game, but I felt it was really way too risky. And then Riptide (who I was hoping would be the one to slip under the radar and win the game for the Mafia in the end) failed to defend himself enough. With some good explaining and in-game-passionate-style-posting, I think you could've easily turned people on Tahu instead. Aragorn was just kind of out of luck past that point.
  • Act II Village: Well done. :P You played a perfect game, which I honestly didn't expect to happen, haha.

I had fun, and I hope you guys did too. Thanks for letting me host! Let me know if you have any questions about the game.

Riptide incriminating himself was the downfall of us in Act II, I was caught in a catch 22 when DH turned out as the dr. I was hoping Tahu had been given a vigilante role and he would kill some townies. Definitely feel a framer should have been in the game to balance it.

So when I saw Lander call out "Med Student" as his claim and get a response from Top, I kind of thought the game would be in the bag for the Mafia. If nobody's roles could have been the same between Act I and II, he effectively confirmed Tahu as a power role. The three people left alive in Act I were all normal villagers, after all, and Tahu was the only not turned Mafia in act II. Whether Tahu would have been a Doctor, Detective, or Insomniac had yet to be seen, but with the backup doctor called out, two confirmed villagers to be highly likely protected (with unconfirmed power roles, both claiming regular villagers) I was shocked as hell to see Monk and Scar as the first kills. Confirmed villagers, yes, but with the nature of this game, hitting power roles was ungodly easy in act II, and I didn't see them as the first targets.

Of course, they had no way to know we weren't power roles ourselves. In fact, I'm surprised Henry took the bait - losing an almost-but-not-quite-confirmed backup doctor is not quite the loss that a confirmed villager and possible other power role is. I think he realized this when attempting to protect Scar.

Riptide, you didn't answer me during the game that I saw, so I'll ask again now: Were you protecting Top the night you died Act I?

Also, Lander:

They had no way of knowing, but as I said in Skype, personal opinion here: I don't think Jaron would confirm two villagers who happened to be both power roles.

Tahu was at least 99.99% sure to have a role. He wasn't confirmed as a vanilla townie in game one, but to have four villager roles and no mafia roles?

My thoughts of the plan revolved around killing Tahu and taking a chance at blocking the other peoples' roles, not the other way around. ^_^;

Let's see... I can't remember who I tried to protect N1. Successfully protected Lander N2. I would've been able to get another good guess, but nooo, I can't protect myself. So for N3, I protected Scar and died.

Monk, Night One I had a WIFOM moment between you, Scar and Top. If I chose one of you two and left Top open, the mafia may have had a go anyway, and I figured I was a mafia target too so we could at least have an extra Doctor. Even if I had protected one of you, they could have gone for the other. I just played it 'safe'.

Night Two, I thought I'd give nothing away and go for Scar instead, which would have worked had I not been roleblocked.

3/3, perfect game, great job guys!

Good game all around. I think the mafia might have been able to get by with a bit more of an advantage the second game. Aragorn, you'd have been much better off claiming Insomniac (though I guess you didn't know if that role existed or not); roleblocker is almost always a mafia role, especially in a game so heavy with power roles.

Yeah, I was really unsure whether it existed, I gambled and it didn't pay off. When you cleared market I knew I was in trouble, having him confirmed a villager meant I was highly likely to be the remaining mafia.

I have to say that that was a pathetic display put on by me, even by me as mafia standards. Everything I did backfired on me. :? It was that damned Monk Basher.

I certainly had fun, but I think that even the second act was bias against the mafia as well. It wasn't as monumentally bias as the first act, but still pretty bad. Detective, Doctor, Backup Doctor, two confirmed townies, and a heightened chance of mafia being among those who were vanilla townies last game, versus an extra mafioso and a roleblocker. Odds were still pretty poopy.

I played this one badly from the start. I was (obviously) trying to look town by figuring the odds and pointing out that the mafia were most likely to be among those who were vanilla during act I. As soon as I made that post, I realized I was digging my grave, especially since Monk was having none of it. I spent the rest of the game backpedaling and never made it out of the danger zone. I figured since I knew Tahu had a role, that if I could get everyone to lynch him my work would be done.

The only somewhat smart thing I did was claim Med Student. Unfortunately, Aragorn and Riptide didn't really capitalize on this. I claimed for a number of reasons, the main one being assumed by top: that Jaron had removed one or some of the town's roles, and that I'd get lucky and claim the one that was removed. It was strange that I was having a dilemma whether to choose Insomniac (which was removed) versus med student. When Top counterclaimed, my death was assured, but I had done plenty of damage. The town was confused, as they expected me to claim Doctor or Detective. Of course, we knew who the real med student was after that. And, presumably, Doc Henry would be glued to Top for at least one night, giving us a free kill. Though killing the confirmed townies wasn't a terrible idea, hunting for the doctor or killing tahu would have been a better bet, I think. Had Aragorn killed Doc Henry instead of Scar we might have stood a chance as he was the driving force after Monk died.

I thought aragorn's roleblocker claim was somewhat clever, as he had the evidence to back it up, but I figured it would screw him over in the end. I told him to claim insomniac if I claimed med student, and had he listened, he would have lived longer. Though the town was already onto the idea that some roles might have been removed.

In short, good job, town. That was some excellent play. I'm hungrier than ever to play a good game as a mafioso. I haven't done so in a long, long time.

Over the last like 4 or 5 games I've been Mafia 3 or 4 times now, and I have enjoyed those games so much. But I have to say it was fun to be Village aligned again.

Can't wait for next game!
