...I graduated from college with my bachelor's degree!! I majored in English and minored in writing, and would love to get a position at a publishing house of some kind. Eventually I'd like to make a living as a writer and/or editor. I also would like to go to grad school and get a master's in English, perhaps in writing. My very lofty goal is to get a PhD. There are few things I have found in life that I love more than the challenge of higher education, so I hope to go as far as I'm able.

For me, this is a big deal because my dad didn't go to college, and my mom didn't even graduate high school. I am the first of my immediate family to have completed college, and it feels great. I came from a very, very poor family; one that didn't even have enough to eat some of the time. To go from where I was to where I am has been amazing.

It was hardly ever easy, and now I have tens of thousands of dollars in student loans hovering over me, but you know what? It doesn't matter BECAUSE I AM AN EDUCATED MAN.

The bottom line is that RV has played a pivotal role in my education as well. Whether it was honing my skills by writing or participating in the RP and Lit society, or helping out behind the scenes, RV always served as a haven away from schoolwork as well as an opportunity for alternative projects. Cheers everyone, and may you all reap the success you deserve as well! :D

Yet you still refuse to complete a simple roleplay! :angst:
Many congrats on finalizing the graduation, sir. Now write something epic and become a millionaire. :D

Excellent work. Sounds like you have the same manner of BA I got (I assume it's a BA?), although I would warrant your major was probably more literature-oriented.

I too understand the pride of being the only educated man in one's poor-arsed family. I am absolutely the only person out of both my parents' entire families and subsequent generations to earn a baccalaureate so far.

Well done.

Sir, what you have now is what I hope to achieve. I will soon be pursing a BA in English and would love any words of wisdom you may be able to offer. General expectations, possibly some tips for student loans/scholarships (I come from a poor family as well, my parents/sibling never went to college), whatever advice you might be able to offer?

Our only difference is that I've got sights set towards teaching.

Congrats man, it's a great achievement.

And yes, I'll take an upsize.

Jokes about B. Arts are fun, especially when it's half my degree.

Hey lander, is there any chance of getting some of your class mates to post their work here?
To get the library/scribery more activity

Thanks for the sentiments, everyone!

To answer some of your questions: I studied at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. Mostly because it's the second-cheapest public university in the state at about 17k a year. The CHEAPEST is widely known as a Fuzzy Bunny school and is also only 40 minutes from my hometown, which translates to every douchebag from high school ends up going there. No thanks.

In terms of getting permission to post others' work in the scribery: Eadwulf is right when he assumed my studies were more literature-intensive. Though, as a writing minor, I basically took all available writing classes at the undergraduate level. And some at the graduate level as well. Northern simply offers many, many more literature classes at the undergraduate level. And the English major seemed more practical, I could get into just about any communications department with my skillset.

On topic: this isn't the place for academia, Marketman. It's sad, but true. We need to generate traffic, and analyzing the postcolonial context in the first chapter of James Joyce's 'Ulysses' isn't going to do that. Neither is posting indulgent creative pieces. I have dozens of papers that I could post just for the sake of content, but it isn't worth the time formatting them to meet RV's standards if they are only going to be viewed and appreciated by a handful of people.

Goten: I plan to write a guide to surviving college and I will post it in the Scribery soon. And, given my major, there will be many things in there that will pertain to writing papers and whatnot. You'll definitely find those things helpful. If you have any specific questions, I'd be more than happy to help you. It's always great to see someone else with a passion for reading and/or writing. ;)

Scholarships are very important, and as I don't think you are in high school anymore...try to get in touch with your old high school counselor, or someone from another institution who could help you with scholarships. I don't know what state you're from, I'm only familiar with Federal aid and things offered in Michigan. You also will have many doors fly open for you if you had good grades in high school but it's not required. I was a good student, but never a great one, except in my English classes. I graduated high school with a GPA of about 3.2, and I expect a GPA of around 3.0 for college. Also, if you have bad test scores, you might want to consider retaking the ACT and/or the SAT as better scores will net you more money.

Go to your local employment agency (In my state it's an organization called Michigan Works) and ask about scholarships, volunteering opportunities, etc etc. Volunteering is a great way to meet good people, and by giving back to your community your resume will look better, and so will your college and scholarship applications. Also, I use/d a site called Fastweb.com that is an INCREDIBLE place for scholarships and internship opportunities. It's free to use, and once you take a questionnaire it will compile tons of scholarships that you might qualify for. And don't forget to check out/apply for scholarships offered by the universitie/s you want to attend. Apply ahead of time, and apply for those scholarships. Don't let essays deter you. That's how they weed out the men from the boys. Writing entrance/scholarship essays is a whole other beast on its own, but you wouldn't believe how much money goes to waste due to no applications or underapplications. Apply everywhere and anywhere you can for scholarships.

And this goes without saying...but from what I know about you, you ought to get a buttload of federal aid. Fill our your FAFSA as early as possible. What you don't get in aid, you'll be able to get in federal loans, which is much better than student loans from a bank. And be careful of fafsa aid sites...don't fill it out anywhere other than Fafsa.gov.

Awesome accomplishments, your ma would be proud. Next time you're in town let me know and I'll come up and buy you a congratulatory fifth of your choice. We need to get the crew together for drinks.
