Quote:
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich defended on Thursday his controversial plan to have schoolchildren from poor neighborhoods serve as janitors.

"A very poor neighborhood. You have kids that who are under law required to go to school. They have no money. They have no habit of work. What if you paid them part-time in the afternoon to sit in the clerical office, and greet people when they came in?" he said. "What if you paid them to work as an assistant librarian?"

He then discussed his proposal for having poor students serve as janitors. "Let me get down to the janitor thing, and these letters are written that janitorial work is really hard and really dangerous and this and that," he said. "Fine. So what if they became assistant janitors and their job was to mop the floor and clean the bathroom. And you pay them."

Gingrich went on to compare his plan to a project paying children to read books in Georgia.

(Video above via ThinkProgress.)

Last month, at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Gingrich called child labor laws "stupid." "Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school," he said. He repeated the idea on the campaign trail, saying it would be "dramatically less expensive."'

Gingrich said Thursday that his previous comments were "spun out of control" by "the left."

Janitorial work is hardly easy -- the Labor Department notes that janitors may "spend most of their time on their feet, sometimes lifting or pushing heavy furniture or equipment. Many tasks, such as dusting or sweeping, require constant bending, stooping, and stretching."

How are people even considering voting for this guy? America gone wrong, truthfully speaking. For those with a short-term memory, he also had an affair with a woman but no one called for his resignation à la Anthony Weiner (even though he just had nude photos) or anyone else for that matter...

Making it mandatory for children to work. What a joke.

Sure kids can have jobs if they want(babysitting, raking neighbors leaves, flippin burgers etc)... But that is their choice! It shouldn't be mandatory. What if that kid wanted to focus more on their studies?

Slavery with payment and education, the perfect disguise.

Am I the only one not seeing where he said it would be mandatory? As much as I dislike Gingrich, it's just an idea being tossed out there, and it doesn't sound like he necessarily meant it would be mandatory. In fact, the only way it would really even work is if it were optional.

So... The issue here isn't that this plan would essentially end up sacking every current janitor in the school system in question?

Spun out of control indeed...

Hmm, this does not sound like a very good idea. What benefit do the poor kids get out of it? I mean, sure they do get paid, but what other skills do they gain from this type of work? Learning how to mop floors and clean sick? Not to mention, there is the fact that Janitors all over would be out of a job, if this idea is implemented. I like the idea of paying children to read books, or in a way... paying children to pay attention in school, as crazy as that sounds.

Jeez, there've been like 7 topics in the past month about the stupidity of America. Is this some kind of trend now or is it just really coindidental?

Ray, it's the stupidity of the American government. Vote Libertarian, get them out!

They're already getting a product (education). Now you want to pay them to get that product? There isn't even the money for this sort of idea.

I have mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, I can appreciate the idea of wanting to give poor students the opportunity to gain the money to pay for their school supplies and whatnot. On the other hand, it 1.) Puts the jobs of current janitors at risk, and 2.) Doesn't do much to reduce the disadvantage these kids are at (either they can't afford school supplies, or they're too damn tired during class to properly focus on their education).

Ideally, the government should allot funds to these schools to pay for the supplies that students can't afford. Obviously that may not be entirely possible given the current US budget, but there has to be a better solution than child labor.

Supposedly that is what some state run lotteries are to be used for. They can hand out millions in winnings but kids still don't even have simple supplies (pencils, pens, crayons, etc)? Schools are continually having to be combined because they can't afford to run on their own, schools falling apart (my high school was supposed to last 5-10 years, it is now 45 years old), and so forth.

We actually had a "class" in high school that you were an assistant to a teacher. I always ended up in gym class or sleeping in the AD's office while he was away getting drun.......I mean "official business". :lmao:

My high school was a lot like this, just a bunch of trailers that have been there for at least 40 years or so. They had just recently started building actual buildings around my freshman year there.

TA's? We had those too. Easy credit for doing like nothing, lol.

I knew many students out of work that would have been happy to work even as a janitor while moving through college.

It's honest work and can keep you living cheaply off campus.
I lucked into a good job with work-study, but there are lots of other good jobs that people can get, maybe not very glamorous ones but good jobs through work study.

I believe that's what Newt is talking about in this case is work study.
When mommy and daddy can't pay for your college, you'll reconsider working even as a janitor.

I don't believe it was referring to college?

Which makes me wonder if Znath even read... Clearly he says that child labour laws are stupid and that the poor students work alongside with the janitors instead of, I don't know... Getting an education? This has nothing to do with your mommy or daddy paying for your college...

This would be for students whose families have no money. Instead of having them sit around at home doing nothing, the idea would be to get them working to improve the school. This obviously wouldn't be cutting into class time, and would help to build a solid work ethic. Is it ideal? No. Life generally isn't ideal.

As to the comments regarding putting regular janitors out of work: That's the point. He's arguing that they're a high unionized body who are costing a lot more money than they should.
