What does everyone here do for work?
Describe a bit about your tasks/duties, or schedule. And your favorite part of your job!! :)

Today, I am struggling for a favorite part of my job... Only cause its 17below. Lol
Otherwise, the scenes are great. And I enjoy seeing all the wildlife out here! So far this trip I have seen several moose, one bear, many birds(grey jays, crows, ravens), and beavers. The fun parts are quad rides for miles each day. I enjoy the challegne of riding on uneven terrain.
But, since I am just stalling in the heated truck, I should probably get out there and accomplish something :P

Will edit this later tonight!

EDIT: my job is to define boundaries of land, or to attain coordinates for points of interest.
to do this, i use a total station(measures angles and distances to calc coordinates based off a previous known point-used when satellite reception is poor and cant use gps) or i use a GPS system to get these coordinates.
the current job im on is to survey a right of way that parallels the clients existing right of way. so we find the boundary monuments, get coordinates for them, and offset these lines to place new monuments that will define our current right of way. this job happens to be in trees. so after the monuments are placed, we have to show the boundary by hanging streamers in the trees along the lines. the clearing crew will cut down everything up to that line of streamers. then, in this case, a ditch will be dug to place the pipeline in. this job is very simple. im quite bored with it :(

today was: drive to job site. set up GPS base station. check for accurate set up. quad further into the job site. define the one boundary of the clients right of way. hang streamers on the other boundary that is in the trees. repeat. quad back to truck. drive back to 'camp'.

Before I got laid off, I was a 3rd year Machinist apprentice.

What I would do in a typical work day is.....
-Get handed an order form and a set of blueprints for parts to be made(could be for......anything metal)
-If metal stock wasn't ordered for said parts, I'd have to hunt some down @ the shop.
-Cut stock to overall length, width, hight with a saw.
-Set up the machine (could be a lathe or milling machine) to hold and cut the stock.
>This step includes everything from getting the part securely fastened to machine to finding drills, milling tools, face mills, reamers, etc. and putting them into the machine's tool holders.
-Program machine using "conversational" code. Basically you have to tell the machine where the part is, how big it is, what tools to use, how big the tools you are using are, where each tool needs to cut, how fast the tool will be spinning, and how fast the tool will be moving on the machine's axis', etc.
-Run program to cut first part.
-Measure it and compare to blueprints and tolerances given on said prints. Tolerances (how close we have to get to specified dimension) could be anywhere from 1/8" to .001". We rarely got tolerances less than one-thousandth.
-Take part out of machine, deburr it (take off the razor sharp corners, etc.), and package.
-If order calls for multiple duplicate parts, put stock into machine, press start, take part out, repeat.

It was super fun actually......and I miss it. :(

Well, I'm a research assistant.

My job consists of:
making liquid media cultures
growing bacteria on agar plates
analyzing the bacteria at different growth stages
organic synthesis of oxime eithers and alkoxyamines
cleavage of those molecules I just synthesized
(basically I dump a bunch of chemicals in a flask, let it run for ~24 hrs, and pour a bunch of stuff in after.)

Its tedious, but when it comes to analyzing results its fun :D I love nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Registered Nurse
7p-7a (also on call a lot)

I do pretty much what most nurses do. I really enjoy running and titrating vasopressors and insulin drips. They are every hour, if not more often, checks and you are constantly changing settings. It really keeps your mind focused. Some nights the only time I pull my cell phone out is at lunch, I totally forget about it!

I work part time in the seafood department at a local grocery store. Been there for over 3 years now, and I dont intend to quit until at least next April.

I fillet different types of fish and serve customers product. I keep the freezers organized and tidy and do general cleaning of the department.

Pays like total crap (10.50/hr) but it's close to home and the people working there are generally nice. Department managers get paid 16-22 dollars and store managers get around 25-26 an hour, i think.. Money ain't all that great no matter what role you have, lol.

I own a farm in Scotland. It's almost a white elephant, but I can maintain a stable income with effort. I currently have family living/working there free of rent because I didn't feel like living there. My work mostly involves invoicing, rates, etc. and explaining on the phone how one is supposed to use a diesel tractor/mower. Honestly, they call me posh, and yet I seem to be the only one who knows how to maintain farm equipment...

That's my main form of income. Aside from that, there's odd work that I do. Welding, repairing fishing boats, etc.

Used to work in a place like that, sucked so much because the manager was terrible.

I currently work as an assistant in the meat department in my local supermarket conglomerate. I vary from working a few hours per week to managing the department when my manager goes on holidays.

I work part time at a bakery/cafe store.

My tasks are:
-Ringing up customers, and getting their bakery orders ready (bagels, pasteries, breads, etc.)
-Making sure that everything is stocked (cream cheeses, water bottles, barista station, etc.)
-Making smoothies/espresso drinks
-Training the new people when they start to work
-Doing the dining room when I am scheduled to do so (taking dishes from bus station to dish, cleaning tables, filling coffees, taking trash out, cleaning bathrooms)
-Sweeping, stocking, or cleaning things up during the slow hours (If I am closing, prepare everything for close, like resetting the bakery case and cleaning of the bread slicers/bagel slicer)

That's the gist of my tasks, depending on what the manager wants me to do for the day. If it's register, I am mostly in charge of the bakery area and ringing people up. If it's dining room, then I have to do all the dining room related things. It's a flexible schedule; sometimes I will be working the lunch shift, while at other times I would have to close or open the bakery section (used to have to open bakery, though they found a new person for it.) I've been working there for two years now. I have a love/hate relationship with the job lol. I guess my favorite part of the job would have to be the people working there. They're mostly nice, and fun to work with. :)

I work for my university, and have for three years now. My job title is Security Assistant. I am on duty from 12am-7:30am twice a week, usually. I'm in charge of one residence hall's nighttime security. That is to say, I keep watch all night to keep people from being too loud, doing anything stupid, etc. All I am armed with is a radio directly connected to the cops (and knowledge of at least 3 different martial arts), and I have had to use it on several occasions. It's also my job to take out any excess trash at night and to report any maintenance issues. I walk around the building checking to be sure it's all secure. The doors lock at night and it is a problem if/when they are propped open. There's a horror story of a hobo getting into a building and staying the night in the study lounge, and that's when my position was created, haha. I get paid just over 8 bucks an hour but I am a full time student as well and I get epic federal tax breaks. There's also an insane amount of downtime, I probably do homework/watch tv/play video games for about 75% of my shift. And I get in zero trouble for it, because I know what my job is and I do my job. The rest is just details. I love my job, but fear it's too damn easy and I might get overwhelmed once I get out into the world. Hopefully the pay will reflect the rise in responsibility, haha.

I also am a teaching assistant for the university's judo class and am also president of the NMU Judo Club which is pretty much a job. I have a job opportunity teaching judo for money if my sensei ever gets around to opening his own dojo.

Past jobs have included:
Custodial (janitor)
Contracting work
Selling concessions at various venues
Traveling with the carnival (lol)
Working for the county clearcutting drainage ditches (basically a lumberjack, heh)
I am also a paid, published writer.<-----this is my dream job. :awesome:

I have an interesting and diverse skill set. Best job I had was the contracting. It was demanding work most of the time, but I got into epic physical shape doing it. I got paid 15+ dollars an hour under the table, depending on the job we were doing at the time. At 16, that's pretty sweet money. Writing, the carnival, and the work clearcutting were all fun and rewarding as well. But lord, I hated selling concessions. Fuzzy Bunny the service industry. Being a janitor was meh. I got paid like 30 some dollars and was only required to work an hour a week. I often left earlier yet, because I did my job well and I did it quickly, haha.

I expect to make it all official by the end of the month or at least make the process officially start. But like I mentioned before I'm going for Army OCS assuming everything goes as planned.

But currently my job consists of killing myself working out each day. Which is going well at the moment.

My goal is to get into the US Army procurement/research area eventually if I find the line of work suits me well. Before that I've got to work my way through the system by getting in to the Ordnance branch and all the ranks necessary. I don't think you can even get into research until Captain and that's 3-4 years down the road minimum.

Before I started this I worked for 4 or so years as a high pressure waterjet research assistant. This included:
-Designing mechanical parts in 2d and 3d
-coordinating with suppliers and having some parts produced by 3rd parties
-assembling prototype machinery
-troubleshooting ^
-doing grunt work that professors won't like lifting 80 pound steel abrasive bags down a flight of stairs.
and so on, basically engineering work but with 1/3 of the pay I deserved.

It was good work, but then the economy tanked, research money dried up.
Interviews keep saying "wow this is great experience" but apparently not great enough. :glare:
So I figured... ok well the Army's a good path. It'll forgive my loans and give me some pretty irrefutably good experience.
And if I can make it into R/D, that was my main goal in life anyway!

Part time cashier. Can't go full time, there's not enough hours available due to squandering on the schedule writer's part.

Fun part about the job is that I'm the jack of all trades for the front end. Consistently second fastest cashier (#1 is always changing) or so, extremely capable on the bagger's side of the register, and very often I have to end up helping supervisors and managers run small things. I'm the person everyone seems to look for if they can't find a supervisor (and even then I'm often asked first), and due to both my hair and willingness to actually joke around with customers as 'friends' instead of professional-workplace treatment, I'm assuredly the single most known cashier in the store. (Fun fact, I haven't gone a single work day without someone commenting that I cut my hair.) Kind of sucks that I'm too hotheaded to move upward. Place someone as rule-enforcing as me in a position where I'm expected to bend and break rules to keep customers happy, confrontation would happen.

Kind of sucks that it's a job that allows me to work how I like, but in a bare-minimum area. Support role for others, trusted to freely do what I know is needed, able to know pretty much exactly what's needed at any moment.

I mean, i'll keep the seafood thing if Im allowed to, but I don't really enjoy working there all that much...

Assistant Manager at VideoEzy, 40-50 hour weeks. $26 an hour. My job includes dealing with stupid customers that bring me the display cases instead of the ones behind them up to the counter and fighting off bitches that think they are too good to pay latefees. I tell people to leave the store daily because of yelling at me and other staff. I recently had a man threaten to kill me over a $28 late fee. Other than that, i love my job (no sarcasm).
