Notch said it would be released soon after PAX, which is happening over the next few days. At PAX, he is showing the 1.8 demo, so it should be coming soon.

Totally can't wait for 1.8 now.

Also, you guys know the gargamel seed? Or the area Ray's warp is in? I kind of want a town like that, nestled in between mountains or something. The only town ideas I'm really against are the beach and desert ones.

EDIT: I remember on another server helping with both an underwater city and a floating city. Maybe we could give that a try, as endermen die in water, and anything floating would probably be man made and lighted so they can't spawn.

I don't think Endermen move blocks you've placed, nor obsidian/bedrock.

Was there some announcement on 1.8? I just noticed like a ton of inventories up.
I can get mine soon if there's any urgency. I don't have quite as many hidden chests this time
so it wouldn't be as hard as last time.

I also want to be able to get some screens of my castle before a new map.

The estimated release date for 1.8 was sometime between PAX and some other (gaming?) event, i.e. during this week.

In that video at PAX he said he would release 1.8 in sections to make everything easier, and the first one is to be in the next couple of weeks. Which could mean it's in the next couple of days, but who knows.
Also Notch has an awesome accent.

I know it's "probably for the best"
But which of these packs will effect terrain generation, and then which will effect just game mechanics...

If only the first update will have any effect on a map then that solves that.
That's what I'd predict to happen anyway.
