Quote:
(Reuters) - The biggest earthquake to hit Japan since records began 140 years ago struck the northeast coast on Friday, triggering a 10-meter tsunami that swept away everything in its path, including houses, ships, cars and farm buildings on fire.

The Red Cross in Geneva said the wall of water was higher than some Pacific islands and a tsunami warning was issued for the whole of the Pacific basin, except for the United States and Canada, but Hawaii ordered the evacuation of coastal areas.

At least 22 people were killed in the quake and tsunami, Kyodo news agency said, and the extent of the destruction, and the forecast for the tsunami, suggested the death toll could rise significantly.

The 8.9 magnitude quake caused many injuries, sparked fires and the wall of water, prompting warnings to people to move to higher ground in coastal areas.

"I was terrified and I'm still frightened," said Hidekatsu Hata, 36, manager of a Chinese noodle restaurant in Tokyo's Akasaka area. "I've never experienced such a big quake before."

Some nuclear power plants and oil refineries were shut down and a refinery and a major steel plant was ablaze.

Cabinet ministers were meeting about nuclear issues after media reports said the government would declare a nuclear power emergency, which occurs if there is confirmation of radioactivity leaks or a reactor cooling system breakdown.

Around 4.4 million homes were without power in northern Japan, media said. A hotel collapsed in the city of Sendai and people were feared buried in the rubble.

Electronics giant Sony Corp, one of the country's biggest exporters, shut six factories, Kyodo reported, as air force jets raced toward the northeast coast to determine the extent of the damage.

The Bank of Japan, which has been struggling to boost the anemic economy, said it would do its utmost to ensure financial market stability as the yen and Japanese shares fell.

The Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia all issued tsunami alerts, reviving memories of the giant tsunami which struck Asia in 2004. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for countries to the west and across the Pacific as far away as Colombia and Peru.

There were several strong aftershocks. In Tokyo, buildings shook violently. An oil refinery near the city was on fire, with dozens of storage tanks under threat.

Stunning TV footage showed the tsunami carrying the debris and fires across a large swathe of coastal farmland near the city of Sendai, which has a population of one million. Ships in once coastal area were lifted from the sea into a harbor where they lay helplessly on their side.

Sendai is 300 km (180 miles) northeast of Tokyo and the epicenter at sea was not far away.

NHK showed flames and black smoke billowing from a building in Odaiba, a Tokyo suburb, and bullet trains to the north of the country were halted. Thick smoke was also pouring out of an industrial area in Yokohama's Isogo area. TV footage showed boats, cars and trucks tossed around like toys in the water after a small tsunami hit the town of Kamaichi in northern Japan. An overpass, location unknown, appeared to have collapsed and cars were turning around and speeding away. Kyodo news agency said there were reports of fires in Sendai where waves carried cars across the runway at the airport.

Spawning tsunamis and being the fifth largest earthquake worldwide since 1900 and the largest recorded earthquake in Japan, this makes the Kobe disaster look like a large tremor.

I've been watching the news about this for most of the morning. It's a horrible tragedy, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all the families affected. The good-ish news is, it sounds like their infrastructure has remained intact, it's just delayed because of all the people trying to get home.

That's terrible :(. I contacted a few people I know in Japan and they're safe so that's good. Hopefully there won't be anymore casualties.

Biggest quake to hit Japan in over 140 years. There are some truly incredible pictures starting to surface.

Thank god for good Japanese engineering. Their strict building codes probably saved (and continue to save) thousands of lives.

as many of you may remember, i lived in japan for awhile, and for 2.5 years i lived in northeast japan.... when i first heard about this last night, i thought the area i had lived in missed out on the devistation, but apparenlty not... one of the sites i found had video of the fishing fleet being flung around Hachinoe harbor, and i lived about 20 miles from Hachinoe... so i'm sure the area i lived in was at least hit by the earthquake, altough it's a bit inland for the tsunami to have affected it much.

also, CNN and some others are showing videos of destruction around the city of Sendai, which i've been to a few times and is about halfway between where i lived and Tokyo (where i spent my last year in Japan)

while i was living there there was a earthquake of more than 7pts and it did considerable damage-- the building i worked in was totally leveled, leaving only a pile of sticks.... roads were shifted where the left lanes were meeting the right ones.... railroads were uprooted... the grocery store looked like a giant picked it up and shook it....

Japan has always built with earthquakes and typhoons in mind-- the first 'earth quake proof' building was built in Tokyo back in the 1920's --- the old Imperial Hotel, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright...and ever since that time, all new buildings built in Japan, especially multi-story ones, have had to be built with some "earth quake proof" technology...

In fact, that was also the origin of the traditional japanese building technique of constructing houses of sticks and paper-- it was in anticipation of earth quakes and typhoons hitting them, but they could be rebuilt simply-- in a day usually.... unfortunately, a tsunami washes everything away ...

Northern japan is mostly rural, with many, many traditional houses and small towns, so i'm sure there is considerable damage to the whole area, not just the coastal towns....

my heart goes out to those folks and hopes for a swift recovery ....

I lived in Japan for most of my young childhood. From 1 to 6 years of age. All the places I lived in have remained untouched, but I've been to Sendai many times and the whole thing has been completely leveled. I still remember the Sendai airport, which is now completely flooded.

It's awful.

We were watching tv and changed the channel and happened upon this live.
It was pretty amazing. Luckily I imagine that Japan is mostly well prepared for this type of thing.
That will at least mean there would be less damage and fatalities than otherwise.

They've had a big earthquake almost every 8 minutes since the big one. EVERY EIGHT MINUTES.
