Only judging from this topic, the only people who have been targeted are those who have their Runescape name in their profiles. Might it be wise to restrict viewing Runescape names to only registered users or perhaps registered users who have been here some amount of time or made some number of posts?

What incentive is there to hack someone's Runevillage account? Unless I'm misunderstanding this.

They can do some damage if they gain access to a moderator or administrator account. They can even do some damage if they gain access to a normal account account, because they would be able to read or leak the user's PMs, which of course are meant to be private.

In addition to that, some people have their RS and RV passwords as the same thing, especially if they joined both around the same time. (Mine aren't, but at one time they used to be.) That means that if RS stops you from guessing passwords, someone could come here and keep guessing, and if they finally got it right, it might work on RS.

Nope, I haven't received any sort of messages like that. Although, with the free trade it seems that more fansites are being attacked. I read about the same occurrence on TIF.

EDIT:
My RV account has been hit. Just got back from school with my RV acc logged out (I always have it to be automatically logged in). I type in my pass and it's wrong (typed it correctlly though) and I got the message that there's been too many attempts to log in (I only tried once) so I had to type the captcha. My RS account hasn't been touched.

No way that the Admins can check if there has been a single IP constantly trying to log into multiple accounts?

I don't think that just because your account has been logged out, doesn't mean it's been targeted by hackers. Mine has twice today, but I haven't had the Captcha pop up, but I know that mine has done that before in the past, well before we've had any of these hacking attempts.

I think the random logging out might have something to do with the server move, since I've experienced it a few times myself. Haven't had to enter a Captcha, though.

If you get logged out and you have to fill in the CAPTCHA, it means that someone had 2 attempts at your password. If they can guess your password with several times 2 attempts, you should really reconsider your password anyway :P

E-mail addresses aren't shown anywhere on RV. Even if you click the e-mail button it just sends them an e-mail through RV and you never have any way of seeing the e-mail.

Our security has always been Hiker's #1 priority.

Removed as a precaution, probably not the best time to be posting people's email addresses. ~Jackstick

Thankfully Chrome alerted me before opening that site, I hadn't noticed the 0 next to runescape in the URL. Or the grammatical and spelling errors.
