After Delon was finished talking to Caston, he immediately investigated the bed roll where the white mage had been lying. He spotted a few rough spots, which appeared to be footprints. He knelt down to see how large they were, and began looking for other prints in the area. He followed a single pair back to a much deeper pair of prints, and what seemed to be a sled.

"Well, I know how they got her out of here... But that doesn't exactly help..." he said silently to himself. As he followed the path the sled had left, he noticed a slip of paper on the ground. He picked it up and read it, revealing some bad information about their group, and plans to capture the Duke. "Well clearly that didn't work." The paper was signed at the bottom with nothing but a picture of a black bird with it's wings spread wide. "Aha," Delon started, "now that, might be useful." Grabbing his items, he began a controlled sprint towards Rurm, to try to catch up with the group before they did something hasty.

"I believe it is in your best interest to come up with an agreement favorable to us. I understand that your associates made the mistake in capturing one member of this group. Hopefully, we can resolve this before any armies need get involved. I certainly have no attachment to this city." Adam said while moving up. He set a hand on Grageon's shoulder. "Let the man down, Grageon. I am sure your fury burns much hotter than this town would, but we want to help solve this peacefully."

Rage left the room and came back shortly thereafter with some bowl of liquid, offering it to Kyrina. What's in this? I tell him what I know, so he drugs me again, is that it? She kept her mouth closed at first, until Rage asked why she (or they) were after Dusk in the first place. Perhaps this was just a formality after all. Kyrina reluctantly opened her mouth and drank a little from the bowl (which turned out to be broth), suddenly remembering that she hadn't had very much to eat or drink the previous day. The broth soothed her scratchy throat a little, so there was that, too. Thinking on Rage's question as she drank some more, Kyrina foggily recalled what Caston had told her from the start in Rodell.
Caston Carnaly wrote:
So we're dealing with a very dangerous, powerful wizard who can manipulate ALL colors, even more than one at a time. He also carries a vicious double-sided sword, and can imbue it with power. To this very day I haven't the slightest idea as to why he approached me, why he attacked my family...why he's still after us, why he ordered the Institute burned down...so many questions. And I want answers. I couldn't tell you why the rest of us are here...some for the adventure, some for the riches, some for the knowledge; I suppose.
Caston's after Dusk because Dusk made it personal. Everyone else just sort of tagged along for different reasons. I started out on my own looking for adventure, and stumbled onto a party where I could gain knowledge and experience in my White Magic. ...Along with even more adventure, if that's what you can call this.

She stopped drinking the broth. Being indebted to your kidnapper for feeding you was more an embarrassing feeling than any other. Her plans were really none of his business, either, but she was a tad frightened to say that out loud. So why was she after Dusk? Maybe turning things around would work better--this was still the truth, after all. "It's...it's probably less that we're after him and more that he's after us, I think. He's an evil man that has already attacked a lot of people; isn't that enough?"

"Where am I? Is this Rurm?"

Grageon held the man a little longer, looking directly into his eyes. Even though he came off as not being afraid, he could tell the man was a little nervous. Grageon smiled at the man, pondering the thought of throwing him off the bridge. He set the man down lightly, and asked, "What're the terms?"

"The terms are as follows." The contact said, smoothing his wrinkled clothes. "Hand over the Duke in exchange for the girl, or pay a sum of one thousand gold coins or anything of equal value. If you refuse either of these terms, I cannot say what may become of the young lady."

As the man concisely laid out the terms of exchange for the group, a shadow appeared at the far end of the bridge. It seemed to be moving quickly. Soon he was close enough for the group to see, apparently he had been running because he now bent over and pt his hands on his knees.

"Boss...says that...new term is...he'll meet with the group for discussion if there is a promise of no violence." He straightened up and looked at Grageon nervously, and sized up the rest of the party. The group no doubt displayed various forms and degrees of anger. Their new friend had been stolen from her seemingly safe bed and the party was running on a lack of sleep. They no doubt looked like men who shouldn't be trifled with.

Caston thought for just a moment about what Adam kept saying about burning the town down...this time he had said something about an army. What could he be talking about? An army, or any amount of people for that matter; would be especially useful once they found the location of Dusk's lair. Caston had a sneaky feeling he had a small horde of mutilated beasts at his disposal. He made a mental note to ask Adam about it later.

As far as meeting with the supposed boss went, Caston saw no reason not to go. Worst case scenario, it's a trap and the party has to fight their way out of it. He couldn't say he didn't want blood like the rest of the group, but surely there was a more tactful way to go about this. Best case scenario, the boss lays out some easier terms to the group or shows up to the meeting with Kyrina.

"I think we ought to oblige. We're backed into a corner, and we certainly can't take on an entire gang by ourselves. Aside from that, we don't know where they're keeping her. It's in our best interest to cooperate." He looked to the rest of the group for approval, and hoped that Delon would stay out of trouble in the meantime.

***

The girl hesitated to drink the broth at first, but obliged after a moment. She was no doubt leery of Rage and his intentions. He couldn't blame her, really. But business was business.

"...No, that isn't enough. You can't imagine the pain, loss, and destruction I've seen in my visions as a result of this apparent battle that is looming ahead of us. I've been doing quite a bit of thinking, and a very special arrangement may be in order."

The girl asked if she was in Rurm. He didn't know what kinds of tricks she had up her sleeve, all he knew about White magic was that it was primarily a moderate healing aid and used for manipulating the magic of others. At any rate, he came to the conclusion that telling her where she was would be a bad idea. Instead, he stood there in silence, studying her. He tried to assess whether or not she had anything on her she could use against them, or to help her escape. He had always been a somewhat decent man, the idea of searching her as thoroughly as he would need to to reassure himself seemed wrong. He wouldn't want to do that to any woman, but this one was different. She was incredibly innocent, untainted, pure, and honest; even when faced with the worst of circumstances. She puzzled him quite deeply, and he didn't like that.

Any armies...? If the boy could fashion a beetle to be a tracking device, something told me he could certainly fashion a swarm of beasts of metal to do some damage. 'Twas a unique prospect, and very much worth researching. For the time being, Raila gave a nod at the new proposal. "The only thing about this I do not like is that we're walking into this without proper sleep. But I agree to the new condition, on one condition." Raila tossed the apple he'd been carrying to the new messenger, who caught it in a little surprise. "You took her away before she had a chance to wake up and eat the ones I'd found for the party. At least do her a favor of showing her we're still looking out for her, and give that to her."

Raila prevented himself from looking at Adam, wanting to make sure the apple seemed like an innocent offer instead of a plan. Instead, he hung a hand within his belt where the glass orb was. Finding a mental link with Paige was easy, considering how ridiculously close she was at the moment. "Soon."

Maybe Rage was right. Kyrina knew that Dusk had already caused pain to Caston and destruction to the Institute in Windrow, but she hadn't taken very much time to consider what Dusk could do if those actions were a mere fraction of his power, or his intent. But didn't that, in turn, validate her answer? They were out to stop him simply because he needed to be stopped before something more drastic happened.

Kyrina waited for Rage to answer the question of her location, but as the seconds ticked by it seemed more and more evident that he wasn't going to reveal that to her. Instead, he simply stared at her in silence for a while, which started to make her uncomfortable. Kyrina wasn't sure if he was thinking of his next question, or mulling over what she had said, or if she had somehow said too much, or what. If he was just going to stare at me like this, he could have done it when I was sleeping. ...I probably shouldn't say that out loud.

Attempting to shift her weight a little to keep her legs from falling asleep, and eager to break the awkward silence, Kyrina spoke first. "No, I...probably can't imagine what you've seen in your visions. But that's why Dusk has to be stopped before he can hurt a lot more people, and that's why our group is trying to do just that." She wondered if maybe Rage would respond to a different question, so she continued. "What kind of...special arrangement...are you talking about?" Please don't involve me please don't involve me please don't involve me...

"A very simple agreement, really. It does no harm to tell you, I suppose. I believe I'd be willing to trade you for any extra information your party could provide about this Dusk fellow. That, and everyone's word that you're going to stop this man. But it isn't at all that simple, oh no. I'll be requesting to send several of my men with your group to ensure that the job gets done, and to learn any additional information that might be useful." He paused. "I've come to a decision that stopping this man, and thus in turn returning the city to its former demeanor. Aside from pure business, I've been quite disturbed by my dreams and visions. Of course, my own men or myself may end up as collateral damage in this battle, and I'd like to minimize that risk. Aside from the men I send with you to wherever you're going, of course."

***

The man who offered the new terms took the apple from Raila. He couldn't think of a good reason to refuse the request, and the boss had wanted them to accept the new terms above all others. If that involved giving the girl an apple from her friends out of good faith, then so be it.

"There are several Inns in town, stay at the Dragon's Tail. We'll have word to you by noon (I'd put us now at early, early morning, maybe just before dawn). You're free to enjoy the town until then."

As the two men turned, the Duke finally spoke up. "YOU! You foul-mouthed, underhanded, roughnecked, kidnapping, murderous, thieving thick-skulled BRIGANDS!" His face was red, he was spraying spittle from his mouth. "Do you think you can plot my kidnapping, and now make demands and get away with it??"

He was entirely disregarded for the most part. The first man barely glanced over his shoulder. "It's out of your hands, old man." They took their leave.

The Duke stood there stewing in his anger. Caston put a hand on his shoulder in silent support, then made his way over the bridge and towards the city.

Delon had sprinted for a few good minutes before he realized he wasn't making good time, and went into a full-on wind sprint. As he arrived at the the entrance to Rurm, he finally met up with the rest of the group. "Cas..." he started before inhaling a great breath. "Caston, take a look at this." Delon handed the note to his blue mage friend. "If I'm right about this, we're dealing with the Dark Phoenix gang, if we're going to get Kyrina back, we can't give them the Duke. We'll be playing into their plans, and I just don't respect a bunch of thieves that need to use numbers and force rather than skill and cunning..." he explained. "Rogues code of honor and all that. I don't expect you to understand. But, you need to draw them out of their base, let me handle the rest... As I said before, I could use this opportunity." The same devilish grin he used so many times returned to his face, it was obvious he had a plan.

Rage's sudden ramblings didn't make very much sense to Kyrina, and frankly, the thought of her captor trying to accomplish the same goal as Caston's group, or even team up in doing so, disgusted her quite a bit. Her feelings on the matter probably showed in the next bit she blurted out, as her words came forth quicker than usual.

"You...you steal, you kidnap people, you threaten to 'murder me in cold blood', and then suddenly you want to help our group fight Dusk? You go to great lengths to further this shady gang you call a 'business' with your guards and your ransoms and your drugging me in the middle of the night and you turn around and want to team up to fight the bad guy, all the while saying you might selflessly die as 'collateral damage'?! Do you take us for fools?"

Rage laughed. He laughed, and laughed, and then laughed some more.

Such an innocent, naive little girl.

"My dear child," he said through tears, "it isn't about good or bad. It's about what's in my best interest, and the best interest of my organization. If that means helping you and your group, that's what I'm going to try to do. Kidnapping you wasn't my initial intention, stealing the Duke was. But alas, that didn't work out and you were the easier grab. I believe I've outlined my logic to you several times, I won't repeat myself again. Everyone in the city is one edge, either from actually having visions associated with this guy, hearing from someone who has had the visions and becoming scared at the description, or hearing from hacks who have latched onto the real Seers to try and keep their credibility. At any rate, everyone is one edge. No one is gambling, ordering women, or even going out and drinking. This spells awful business for me, and I wager I'm losing more money because everyone is afraid than I would earn from a ransom, from the Duke, or from selling you. It's simple numbers, my dear. As far as killing you goes, that's the ugly side of business. If your party tries to do anything that puts me in jeopardy of losing you, I'd just as soon see you dead as see you free with none of my demands met. I didn't go through kidnapping you to see you escape, I WILL at least get the satisfaction of killing you if such events conspire against me."

***

Caston took the scrap of paper from Delon and read it. It was apparent instructions on kidnapping the Duke, and at the bottom there was a black bird crest or something of the sort, maybe a seal? He recognized it from a book he had read.

"This is the seal of the Dark Phoenix gang, one of the oldest and most connected groups in Rurm. Some say that they're so old and evil that they had ties with the Dark Lord when he appeared on Earth for a short time. From the little that I know, they are most certainly not to be underestimated. It's no wonder they made off with Kyrina so easily...they have a history of incredible heists and scams throughout the centuries of known history." Caston sighed, the situation became more and more hopeless the more information they received. "The only question is, do we have enough money to get someone to talk? Do we wait and consider their boss' offer? Will the people who have the right information be more afraid of us than of him?" He becoming more angry by the second. He stopped for a moment, and concentrated his excess energy on the river. He lifted one section of it, and brought it down in a whip-like motion, sending a large wave downriver. It was sloppy, of course; he wasn't concentrating at all. But more importantly, he had sacrificed precision for raw power. Similar to a Red Wizard, you might say.

"I'm so tired...tired of this journey. Tired of bad things befalling us at every turn. Tired of all the questions without answers. Tired of chasing a man more elusive than a wisp of smoke, yet with the power to possibly end the world, not to mention all of us at once, without any trouble."

Grageon listened to Caston's words, and felt pretty much the same way. "I think, the best course of action, would be to meet with these guys, and listen to their demands. If they're as evil and serious as you guys make it out to be, they won't hesitate in killing Kyrina. The worst thing we could do in this situation would be to run in there, and threaten or kill them. At the very least, I'll go. You guys don't have to, and I can handle pretty much anything they throw at me. Let's not talk about this here though, an Inn usually has a restaurant, let's get some hot food and discuss this over a meal."

Grageon started walking the direction the messenger had pointed.

"Backed into a corner?... Caston?" Adam grudgingly repeated. "My people prefer a negotiation where it appears we have all the cards. Or at least act like you do." Moving along he thought about what Delon said. "It is likely they are not rogues or at least, not all of them. I have heard tales from the metal merchants about the larger cities. The organized crime rings can be as large as a small town."

"We might as well play along. They likely know how serious we are and hopefully for their sake would not try anything." Adam says while moving along. "Besides, meeting with us rather than attacking is the smarter move. If he is a smart businessman, protecting his interests include his organization and he knows the only thing holding us back is her being alive."

"If it's all about mister Dusk, curiosity should be sated about why he hasn't elected to simply destroy or enslave. He doesn't seem terribly sadistic if he hasn't started a quest to dominate, which he's described as able to... Call me crazy, but if we're alive and so free to pursue him, I feel it would be entirely possible to simply talk with him for a while. Whether or not the talk would be survived is up to chance, but he's currently pretty much a complete enigma." 'But what could I say...? Cowardly atonement?' Raila stepped up to Caston and rested a hand on his shoulder. "Kyrina comes before anger, Caston. If Dusk wants anything to do with this party, he'll make it known, odds are, so for now, let's see why this Duke is so important to Rurm enough that they'd need to kidnap our new friend for him. And let's get some breakfast; a couple apples from a while ago doesn't quite cover it."

Raila turned to Grageon. "As for you, friend, I doubt putting yourself in the middle of a group of cutthroat bandits is the wisest move. Though that you've lost your speech impediment for the sake of Kyrina proves her value to you, this one's for everyone to deal with together."

Rage's bursts of laughter and relatively harsh remarks caused Kyrina to be taken aback, though to be honest, she thought her outburst might have been met with such a reply. "The satisfaction of killing you..." rang in her mind as she further solidified her belief of what a heartless man he could be (or was.) For now, Kyrina was stunned to silence. She very much wished Rage would eventually have nothing to do with Caston's plan to stop Dusk, but that wasn't up to her to decide. As she had told herself at the beginning, Rage seemed to have all of the cards, and right now she was just along for the ride, for better or for worse. Definitely worse...

OOC: Sorry guys, camping trip over the weekend.

BIC: Jarrett had been listening to all of this, trying not to burst. When he finally had control, he said, "Look, to be honest, if what Caston is saying is true, then we do have a chance to take down one of the oldest and most ruthless gangs ever. And you seriously expect me to let you handle this alone, Delon?" He grinned.

"I don't see any other stealthy people in here. You draw them out to negotiations, I'll handle the rest, as I said before..." Delon answered as he followed the party into the Inn.

"I would prefer you did not try anything that could jeopardize her safety." Adam interrupts the talk of infiltration. "We should save that card until we have no choice. At the moment we have what they want, the duke of a horridly corrupt junk-pile of a town and the upper hand in force should it be necessary. If we try sending somebody in against an unknown force of thieves and assassins... the odds would be unfavorable without knowing their skill level. Going in would be going against their best strength." He continued as they started getting closer to town.

"I think you misunderstand what I'm trying to say here." Delon said to Adam as he grabbed his shoulder and turned him around. He used his forearm as a map, of sorts, with his finger being a planner. "Say, this area is where negotiations will be. They come in from this angle, and we from here. They have Kyrina, and we have the Duke. We obviously want to get both of them." He paused. "You guys would be, without a doubt, talking over how this goes down... Which is where I come in." Delon reached into a pouch on his sash and pulled out some sand-like white powder. "I'm sure you know what this is? If not, it's flash powder. I don't know if there's some fancy name for it, but it blinds, and makes a loud bang. This would be where I swoop in, cut Kyrina loose, and take their boss for hostage... Unless you have a better idea that will land us both Kyrina and leave the Duke safe?"

"Kyrina is the only one I care about saving." Adam replied cold and bluntly as possible wrenching his arm away from Delon. "If there is a way to save the Duke from them after we save Kyrina, you can worry about it after she is out of harms way. Had the people in charge of this town been doing their job, these gangs never would have such control. We should secure the innocent life before worrying about saving the tainted hands of the government here. In a town like this, they are hardly any different from thieves themselves. He was likely captured after a corrupt deal with the Phoenix guys went bad."

Adam trudged on thinking to himself, That Duke guy's just gettin' what he deserves... Back home the stupid thieves and corrupt officials would go to trial then work in 'the pit' for their penalty. If the government doesn't serve the people, let somebody competent take its place. It's no better than an infested swamp... one that needs to be drained and torched...
