Granted, we have little evidence to go on for other mafia, however Lander's rants about poor mafia help - Discrimin8 one of them, leads me to think that the mafia are well... 'noobs'.

No offence, in that case, but having eventually read Mafia 14... as I'm sure DC1 and Lander would agree... Defeat falls into this quite easily... if I recall correctly he spent 2/3 days constantly voting for the confirmed detective :/

Okay, completely ignore my first two points. Whatever.

We have no guarantee that he'll help us. And the way you're making it sound, it sounds like at that point in the game we'd all magically know who NOT to lynch? Even if he wants to help the village, what's stopping his vote from helping the mafia instead?

There is NO good reason to keep him alive with what his claim is.

Top, what if through some other role (there could still be an acual detective out there or something) and my following, we managed to get two mafia in a day? We'd be able to use Riptide's ability easily then...

Regardless of whether you see a neutral role as one to keep around until the end, or get rid of whenever, I'd much rather go after a mafia than a neutral role, as it is more beneficial to the town.

On my earlier point though... either Lander was right and the mafia left are well... not the best - going after Scar rather than one of the multitude of veterans left :/
OR one of these veterans is a mafia - Lander's final move was to WIFOM us into thinking that such a skilled player couldn't possibly be a mafia if they can't follow Lander's instructions... and by keeping the rest of the Vets alive it belays suspicion from them.

To be picky, he's third-party, not neutral. He wins on his own, not with the other victors as mentos will. Also, not harmless. I know he says he won't use it but given the right situation, he could easily claim personal victory from the town.

Plus, his dynamite kill is unblockable. Going off Monk's suggestion of a mafia driver (someone who switches targets), if Riptide were to use his kill, even innocently as you want him to, the mafia could possibly exploit it to gain an extra kill that could surpass the village's doctor.

Not risks I want to take.

Not all are active on the topic - and before you go all 'outside evidence' on me, I'm judging this based on the fact that they haven't been replaced. Secondly, traditionally past mafia games are allowed as evidence.

PenguinGuy, doctor last game, 16/7 = 2.29
Tahu1000, villager last game, 8/3 = 1.67

Now, this game's stats to this post:

TheAnimal, 10/4.5 = 2.22 posts/day, 26% more than usual
bluecoat, 5/4.5, no posts since D3 = 1.11 , 37% of usual
PenguinGuy, 4/4.5, no posts D3 = 0.89 , 39% of usual, but offset due to pro-town role. Still significantly low.
Tahu1000, 10/4.5 = 2.22 , 33% more than usual
Steely Mallon, 17/5 = 3.78 , 11% more than usual
Defeat, 14/4.5 = 3.11, 69% of usual.

It's my experience that mafia generally post significantly less than usual, while pro-town roles post significantly more than usual, with villagers hovering around their average. Ranked on those attributes, from most likely to least likely to be mafia:

vanilla townie is still a role. Weakest/easiest to claim, but it's a claim.

It shouldn't for the purposes of that list, but claiming you are a villager IS a roleclaim and generally has an effect on the game when you do claim that.
