Hey there,

A couple of days ago a change was made to the amount of posts that show up on a topic's page, at that point the question was raised why people aren't able to define the amount of posts per page and topics per page themselves. The answer to that was simple: it is a board-wide setting and not a user-based setting.

Since several people showed interest in having that changed, I'm now conducting a poll to see how many of you are actually going to use such a feature. If it is not going to be used a lot, I prefer not to modify the board too much because it makes upgrading a lot harder for me (as I have to verify that all those modifications are all still working as well) just found a simpler and easier modification, but I still feel it shouldn't be added if it won't be used by a lot of people.

Basically, this feature would allow you to set the amount of posts per page in a topic and the amount of topics per page in a forum in the User Control Panel. This will obviously have an influence on how the amount of pages that a topic or forum will span. The only changes you'll notice are the amount of posts/topics changing and the additional fields in the UCP. Nothing else will be different.

The poll will be open for 10 days. Re-voting is allowed.

Greetings,
Glodenox

As long as you don't decrease the number of posts per page, I don't really mind either way

I might use it, but I am used to the way it is now so I really have no preference either way.

Yes! Good update that needs to come. I'd change the amount of Topics per page :)

Topics per page: Yes.
Posts per page: No.

If we make the posts per page customizable, saying "Page 5" won't mean anything anymore. It would only lead to confusion.

viewtopic.php?p=10238186&f=43#p10238186

Then link to topics directly

Problem solved.

Tbh i would set mine at something like 1000 because its easier to scroll than click links

I'm afraid I'll be limiting the amount to 255 for database storage reasons.

Conveniently we have URLs if we need to reference a page.

I dunno, it's not a deal-breaker for me, but it would be nice to have the option. If there's a topic I want to read, clicking through hoops to just read the topic seems annoying to me. It's like those articles on websites where they spread the articles across four pages to increase ad-views.

But if it's really difficult, I don't really mind going back to 15.

Exactly. Glode has enough problems the way it is; this is completely unnecessary. We got along fine without being able to customize this for the past 7 years, we'll live without it.

Hmm... I just found a modification that is quite well written and as such doesn't even require any edits but only the upload of one file which hooks into the system. It is less advanced than the other mod I was looking at, but it should do as well. Do note that the option would then be located where you can set your custom title (and not in the display options as you might expect).

But with that mod, I wouldn't be in any problems at all. So if you voted differently just for that reason, I'd like to thank you, but feel free to change your vote should this change your mind :)

Greetings,
Glodenox

I just want it back to 15 posts per page, whether that means setting it back board-wide or adding a customizable feature.

I don't really mind either way, but the way I had it set up when I wrote my first (primitive) forum engine was that you could set how many posts you wanted per page as part of the cgi line, which defaulted on the user's preference. Links to specific posts wouldn't be affected, but you could also link an entire page, which would store the offset of posts and the posts per page so there would be continuity. I imagine that it's probably difficult to incorporate into phpBB (Never used it before).
