Here’s a game I’ve been wanting to do for a while now.

THE CONTRABAND GAME

There are two countries, North and South. 9 of you are members of the North Country, and 9 of you members of the South Country. Each member of the North Country has 300 million yen in a bank account in the South Country, and vice versa.

However, relations between the two countries have dramatically deteriorated, and war is imminent. Therefore, players must smuggle their money from the opposing country and into a neutral third country. Each player already has 100 million yen each in the third country.

The game consists of 50 rounds. A round consists of two smuggling attempts, one by each country. The Southern Country smuggles first, while the Northern Country inspects. After the Southern smuggling attempt, the roles will reverse.

The smuggling country chooses a smuggler.
The inspecting country chooses a inspector.

These are determined through discussion in the appropriate country’s Google Group within a mutual deadline (24 hours, though this subject can be and should be discussed at other times) If no-one is elected to go, the inspector/smuggler will be determined at random.

Quote:
The inspector proceeds directly to the customs room. The door to his country is locked behind him.
The smuggler leaves his country. The door to his country is locked behind him.

At this point these players Google Group privileges will be temporarily removed and contact with members of their country will be prohibited.

The smuggler decides an amount to smuggle if any, though they are not limited to this in their actions while. Smuggling is done by using a card (which all players have one with their name on it) to access the ATM by the opposing country and withdraw from the account matching the card. Bills are in bundles of 1 million yen and therefore are withdrawn in intervals of that amount. The case used by smugglers has a maximum capacity of 100 million yen.

The smuggler may PM actions to the host during this phase, acting as though there is a physical environment to move within. They will not proceed to the customs room until they PM an action to do so or their deadline (24 hours) runs out.

The smuggler and inspector may speak to each other during this time. Discussion must cease after the deadline (42 hours). Within 12 hours after the deadline or anytime before the deadline, the Inspector may say ‘Doubt x’, x being the amount of money he believes is in the smugglers case. Alternatively, he may call ‘Pass’ if he believes there is no money in the case. If the inspector does not make a decision by 12 hours after the discussion deadline, he will automatically pass.

The discussion between the smuggler and inspector will take place in a third Google Group with permissions set and revoked as needed.

In the event the inspector calls ‘Doubt’, there are three situations that could occur.

Case 1: The inspector calls Doubt but the case is empty.

An indemnity equal to half the Doubted amount is paid from the inspector’s account in the third country to the smuggler’s account in the third country.

Case 2: The inspector calls Doubt and the case contains an amount equal or lesser than the Doubted amount.

The contents of the case are added to the inspectors account in the third country.
Case 3: The inspector calls Doubt but the case contains more than he Doubted.

In this case, the contents of the case as well as an indemnity equal to half the Doubted amount from the inspector’s third country account will be added to the smuggler’s third country account.

At this point roles will reverse and the above steps will be taken again.

Example:
Hidden: 
Player A of Southern Country is chosen to smuggle. Player B of Northern Country is chosen to inspect. Player A sends the following actions in:
- Go to North ATM.
- Use my card to access my account.
- Withdraw 50 million yen and put it in the case.
- Proceed to customs
In customs, Player B calls ‘Doubt 100 million’. 50 million from the case is added to Player B’s outside account.


The rules summed up, as well as some important things such as victory conditions:

- There are two teams: Northern Country and Southern Country.
- Each team is comprised of 9 players.
- Teams take turns smuggling and inspecting.
- The smuggler attempts to pass his money over the border. The inspector attempts to prevent this.
- The entire game is complete once 50 rounds have been played.
- Each smuggler has a bank account of 300 million yen in the opposing country and it is their goal to get it back.
- A smuggler is allowed to carry anywhere from 0 to 100 million yen in a turn.
- All of the money that is successfully smuggled will be transferred to the smuggler’s account in a third country.
- The inspector’s job is to examine the smuggler to determine if a smuggling is taking place, and if so, prevent it.
- If the inspector suspects smuggling is taking place, he should declare ‘doubt’ along with the estimated amount.
- An inspector cannot call doubt if he doesn’t have at least half of the doubted amount in his account in the third country.
- Players have a starting 100 million yen in their outside accounts to accommodate this.
- If the inspector suspects nothing is being carried he should call ‘pass’.
- Victory is determined by the sum of the entire team’s individual bank accounts in the third country at the end of the round. The team with the higher sum is the winner.
- Any leftover money that was not smuggled will go to the opposing team and divided equally amongst their members.
- After that, each player’s outside bank account will have their initial 400 million yen loaned to them deducted: the remaining money is their prize.


Some things to note:

- Under no circumstances may you ‘enter’ the opposing team’s country.
- Under no circumstances may you discuss the game with a member of the opposing team excepting in the Customs Google Group.
- Treat this as a ‘roleplay’. Any objects you have on hand with you should be considered literal objects that you can move around.
- There is a large glass window in each country through which you can see the opposing country. During the game, if you are in your country you can visibly perform actions in front of this window by posting in the main topic. Considering this game a ‘roleplay’ is important here.

Seems rather confusing, and hard to believe that a three Google Group owners would each change their settings 100 times (in and out for 50 rounds). :| But discounting that...is a player "out" once they lose and/or smuggle all of their money?

Count me in....but:

1. Is it me, or is this entire game going to take place in three google groups? EDIT: Read the rules more carefully, but it's apparent to me that the only reason anyone would post in the thread would be to throw off the opposing team. :?:

2. Where is the strategy here, besides trying to "outsmart" the inspector? Is that it, try to put an amount in your suitcase that'll make him wrong in his guess?

3. Is the purpose of the discussion between members of the same country only to discuss what a good amount of money would be, and what a good guess would be?

4. The hell is the point of discussion between the inspector and the smuggler? For the inspector to somehow weasel some info out of the smuggler?

5. If this is to be treated as a roleplay can I (as an inspector) take the smuggler to the back room, subdue him, and check his suitcase for myself? Can I have him shaken down for suspect of smuggling? May I have his suitcase x-rayed?

6. May I imagine the smuggler as of Arab descent, thus justifying wrongful treatment of them, and in turn finding out what they're smuggling? :weird:

It seems to me that they could still make more money by being an inspector if they've somehow smuggled all their money. If they've lost what's on them (100 mil yen) then they wouldn't be able to inspect, but they could still try and smuggle. If they've lost everything, then it seems that they're screwed. That's when the team strategy comes in, I guess.

That being said, do people win by themselves or with their team?

This is gonna turn out to be one big, huge case of WIFOM. Should be funny.

I'm going to be controlling all three google groups.

The game ends at the same time for everyone, and no-one is 'out' until that point.

Most of it will take place in google groups in the form of discussion within teams and between the current smuggler and inspector. I will be keeping track of deadlines and making it clear what phase the game is in on the main topic.

That's for you to find out. You can discuss any aspect of the game with your team, and I encourage you to do so.

Again, find this out yourself. If I went handing out strategies, then what's the point?

No. Treating this as a roleplay mostly applies only to actions in front of the window and actions by the smuggler before he reaches the customs room. Besides, there's only a table and two chairs in the customs room, and the door is locked until you make a decision, and the room is monitored, and violence is prohibited etc etc.

Go crazy with the imagining, but you're not allowed to beat up the smuggler or anything...

It's up to the individual to decide if 'Winning' means an actual team win or walking away with more money at the end of the game.

So technically you win as a team.

50 rounds? Unless this game is very fast paced, I foresee this topic turning into the second Brawl tournament. Also, examples to confirm or deny.

As far as I can see from the "cases", let's see if I got this right.

Smuggler takes out...

Case 1: 0 yen. Inspector says "I doubt you and think you have 80 million in that case."
"Derp, no. It's empty. Thanks for the trust."
Smuggler gets 25 million yen FROM the Inspector. Minus 25 million to the Inspector's country, Plus 25 million to the Smuggler's bank account?

Case 2: 50 million. Inspector says "I doubt you and think you have 80 million in that case."
"Derp, no. It's 50 million... Wait."
Inspector gets the 50 million taken from the Smuggler. So the Inspector's country loses 50 million, but it goes to the Inspector's private account?

Case 3: 100 million. Inspector says "I don't trust you, and think you have 80 million."
"Derp, no. 100 mil. You got screwed."
Smuggler gets the 100 mil from the Inspector's country, and 40 mil (80 / 2 = 40) from the Inspector. So Smuggler's account gets Plus 140 and the Minus is distrubuted as stated above?
