There's only been 3 episodes and this anime has already hit the top for me. The first episode was a "doesn't look bad this could either get really good or turn out really poorly based on how this goes" and it definitely excelled.

Genres: Action, Supernatural

Image

here's a little synopsis I dug up that I fixed up:

In a world after death, the deceased fight for their fate and their future. Yuri, the leader of the Shinda Sekai Sensen, rebels against the god who destined her to have an unreasonable life. On the otherhand, Angel, the chairperson of the student council for the world after death, battles against the SSS members. SSS members utilize armed weaponry to battle it out against the girl harnessing supernatural powers.

And of course this is currently only being aired in Japan so it's subs only right now. Sorry dubnubs.

The show thus far hasn't failed to disappoint. :) Does it come from a manga, or is in anime-only so we can theorize about future events?

Anime Original.

However there is a set of prequel novels that they are also releasing as well as a radio broadcast with more story in it.

They didn't feel a 13 episode anime would fit the story so they branched it out. We should be fine with just the anime, though. It's the main media form for Angel Beats! after all.

I'm liking this series to death (har har pun)! The story's neat yet apparently unpredictable, and there's like at least two songs I want to use in a Jimmy thing someday. :awesome:

I on the other hand am coming close to dropping this.

The clothespin thing was about the only thing I liked about the latest episode. I'm becoming very disappointed in this series lately.

I forgive the previous episode now because of this latest one.

Did you just not like that episode or is there simply a distinct lack of GirlDeMo lately? :awesome:

TK rocks.

I didn't like that episode.

Primarily because:

Hidden:
The bit about his sister was extremely downplayed after they prepped it up as such a big deal. Was extremely unoriginal to boot.

Also: THE PRESIDENT SHOULD BE GONE. At least he's being used well as a character I guess...

As for the wonderfully redeeming episode they just aired the other night:

Hidden:
5th Dan went out like a boss and TK went out like a bro.

I feel sorry for Kanade... She's going evil against her will :(

Agreed, I suppose. It was rather depressing to see Otonashi so self-absorbed, but it set up a good contrast between who he was when he was living and who he is now (practically two different people.)

And I don't know if the President should be gone or not, but at least he is being used well; you're right. He has some good dialogue and useful abilities every once in a while. :awesome: Though his Otonashi-praise is kind of annoying--it's funny to watch how they all ignore him for it though, especially Yuri.

Yeah, 5th Dan and TK...:(

With this series I wouldn't be surprised if something unexpected happened to Kanade, but I have a feeling you're right and the whole season will just come about full circle like that (aka them fighting her.)

Well, I've watched all the episodes I can find (eight so far). Good series; I'm not sure exactly what genre it is, but it's definitely interesting and entertaining.

I like how 5th Dan and TK are like best buddies, lol.

This episode certainly had a couple of twists. And as always, I have no idea how it's going to play out from here (though I can guess at a few things that may happen two or three episodes ahead of now.) This series seems to be good for that.

(Also I love the soundtrack jeez.)

I have a pretty good idea of what to expect from here on. I just wish being ready would be enough to stop the inevitable tears ;_;

I agree with Jaron; that was quite a twist.

Hinata has always been my favorite supporting character.

To be honest I was thinking the episode might end with an angry, understanding glare as a cliffhanger, but like where it went instead much more.

WTH shadow.

Hinata is awesome. I'm glad it's him that's helping. There's no telling what the shadow is at this point. I'm assuming it has something to do with Yui disappearing, though. Possibly some embodiment left behind somehow. Or it could have been Angel in a different form.

It looks like some of them get to come back to life as well. I doubt Yui's bit at the end was just a random scene. Looks like her and Hinata really get a second chance.

It was nice to see everyone lined up together again and 5th Dan doing the same pose as TK

Episode 13 spoilers:

Hidden:
I cried when he stumbled. At least the ending shows Otonashi doesn't stick around.

And from the final seconds, I'm suddenly more inclined to believe Pyro's belief that Hinata meets Yui later?

As Pyro mentioned to me; the title of the series and the heartline monitor thing at the midpoint of each episode makes a lot more sense now.

TK and 5th Dan becoming friends is like the best barely-mentioned-subplot ever. They do the same pose in the last two endings, it's so awesome.

Five stars. Would watch again. :D

I almost didn't watch this because I'm a dubnub, but the first 5 minutes got me hooked and I had to keep watching. :awesome:

Hidden:
Great story, great characters, no unnecessary fan-service (thankfully), great ending and twist. Definitely one of my favorites, not sure if it beats Elfen Lied though. Maybe it's a tie? :awesome:

I wish it could have been longer, there's still so much to tell. I really wanted to see how Yuri died, and Shiina's and TK's past. Anyway the show was loaded with character development and good story, I suppose it's understandable that they couldn't fit everyone in. Iwasawa was an awesome character, it's a shame she was erased so early, but it was also so awesome how it happened.

There was one huge thing I didn't like though, and that's how fast Ayato went from being an evil killing machine to a little suck up. There was a lot of potential for him to be a badass antagonist, and that's what it felt like they were building up to, but no he's just a suck up with an emo story! Not saying he's a bad character, he's fun and his hypnosis turns out to be a useful addition to the story and the funny parts, but all that intensity in episode 6 is extinguished way too easily, all he needed was a hug?! :>_<: Maybe that's why Pyro didn't like Episode 7? Anyway, it's a forgivable flaw. At least he's a good character.

I'm glad it ended the way it did, it would have been seriously lame if Otonashi and Kanade stuck around after convincing everyone else to disappear (in fact I almost lost all respect for Otonashi when he asked Kanade if they should stick around). Kanade being the one to receive Otonashi's heart was an awesome twist. It's a little sad that she didn't feel the same way about Otonashi as he did about her (...or maybe she did? I dunno, I didn't think so), and seeing him there all by himself was brutal, but at least he moved on too. Not sure how I feel about the very last scene.

One more thing, this next part might be a spoiler for another TV show (not an anime). If you've seen the show then you probably already know which one I'm talking about (I don't want to say it here because that would also be a spoiler if you think about it hard enough).

Hidden:
Angel Beats is very similar to Lost. In terms of themes, story, characters, scenes, mysteries, etc. There are a TON of similarities, it's almost hard to ignore. I'm happy to go into detail if anyone is interested, but again if you've watched Lost then you already know about all the major similarities between these two shows. It's not necessarily a bad thing though, in fact it's one of the reasons I enjoyed watching Angel Beats :awesome:

Side note, I found a fan dub of the ending scene on Youtube. The voice acting was fine, but omg it did not feel right AT ALL. I stopped after 1 minute, it felt so weird watching it in English. Maybe I'm cured?
