Little Witch Academia is a standalone 26min OVA produced by Trigger, a relatively new anime studio which is basically an amalgamation of creative workers (mostly former Gainax employees) who have participated in the production/direction of shows like FLCL, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, Black Rock Shooter, and Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. To put it bluntly, the short is basically Harry Potter, with a pinch of Lord of the Rings, and with absolutely no male characters. They don't even try to hide it; they straight up TAKE elements from the Hogwarts and Middle Earth universes and admit simply by being so obvious about it! It lies somewhere between homage and parody, but it works, and that's what matters.

The best thing about shorts is they sometimes have tremendous production value (this one in particular feels on the level of Disney), they're unique and experimental, and short enough that you don't have to make a long commitment to it. But in this case I wish I could make a long commitment to Little Witch Academia. I could definitely see it working as a full series, or a film trilogy. Basically, I want more of it. My only complaint about Little Witch Academia is that there isn't enough of it. This short managed to entertain me and pull me in more in its 26 minutes than some other shows have done in 26 episodes.

So yeah, watch it.

That was pretty great! Akko's character design is the bestttt.

I lol'd when I saw that Diana is also Mio from K-On. Two roles pretty far apart!

YOU GUYS.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1311401276/little-witch-academia-2

They're using Kickstarter to turn a 20-minute second episode into a 35-minute one. Their goal is $150,000.

It launched last night and they already have $250,000+.

Kickstarter is kind of amazing.
