So, I'm watching this right now, and never have I felt so lied to. Everything about the cutesy happy magical girls is a lie. This anime is as grimdark as it gets.

Anyone else watched/watching it? It's only 12 episodes, so it's not long.

And for those of you who are hesitant to watch it due to the genre, I strongly recommend you ignore that facet of it and try it anyways. You'll be surprised.

I watched it back when it aired. It's definitely a good series, and has the potential to be the quintessential deconstruction of the magical girl genre in the same way Evangelion was for the giant robot genre. Hopefully, a major studio is going to get around to a reconstruction next (in the same way Gainax released TTGL after Evangelion). I'm not quite sure why, but I tend to like deconstructions and reconstructions of genres more than the straight versions.

However, I'm not sure that I felt lied to about this anime. The opening is pretty standard as far as cutesy fare goes, but even in the very first episode, there's the witch, which is a bit dark, and Tomoe definitely acts a bit darker than the standard magical girl.

I finished it, and overall I really loved the anime. It was great. And yeah, I saw some dark elements from the beginning, but nothing to elude to its true nature until a few episodes in. You also have to realize this was suggested to me by someone who took some kind of sick joy in making me think this was going to be some cutesy shoujo anime.

The part about "I felt lied to":
*spoiler*
Hidden:
was referring to the fact that the opening always shows Madoka as a magic girl, which doesn't happen until the *very* end.

Just finished watching this show.

It's a very satisfying series. Definitely one of my favorite shows, and very fresh and different from most of the other shows I've watched. The story, artistic style, music, is all awesome. Not sure if it makes it into my Top 3, but it's high on the list, that's for sure. The story is very neatly packed in its 12 episodes... but, judging from the immense popularity of this series, I don't think this is the last we've seen of Madoka Magica.

Thanks for recommending this series, Nateman. I think I would have forgotten about it if you hadn't kept telling me to watch it. :awesome:

I finished watching this as well when it was aired. It's an amazing anime to be honest, and the way the story takes you is really innovative, you really don't expect the ending, or even the lasts few episodes, to go the way they do.

Yes, certain things don't happen till the end, but then, in a way, they did happen a long time ago too, you're just not watching that part of the story.

The show is already being planned to be released in the US, I think Funimation have picked it up, so Manga will over here in the UK. A game is also being released for it on *grabs Dengeki G's October edition* 15 March 2011, Puella Magi Makoka Magica portable. From the screen shots it looks like a JRPG for the anime, but I expect it'll have multiple endings, maybe depending on what time you do. It looks pretty awesome though.

I'll be looking forward to the UK launch, I really hope that do it on BD, as nothing does over here, hell FMA:B volume 1+2 where, and then they cancelled the rest >_< Anyone that hasn''t watched it, really should pick this up. If you are looking for a BD version, Coalgirls are currently doing this.

Some more news on the film project: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... be-trilogy

Looks like it's going to be a trilogy. First two films will be a compilation of the series, and the third film will be an all-new story.

Kind of worried about how the compilation films will turn out. I've had good (Rebuild of Evangelion) and bad (Gurren-hen) experiences with compilation films. I liked the pacing in the series, but they'll no doubt have to speed things up quite a bit to fit a 300-minute series into two 90-minute films. Kinda wish they wouldn't even bother with the compilation idea, and just put all their time and energy into making one film.

I like the sound of the proposed subtitle for the third film, Incubator no Gyakushū (Incubator's Counterattack)

I hate compilation films to be honest. Examples are Shana and Clannad, where yes they're not bad, but there's a series for a reason. Evagelion I like, but the story does differ once you get to 2.22 so I'm fine with it, and that I think I drooled when I watched the film and saw the art.

So I doubt I'll watch the first two, but will wait for the third ^_^

The Clannad film actually came before the TV series, so it's not really a series compilation.

I hope the story doesn't differ too much, I'd prefer them to expand on what they've already made (That said, I love where Rebuild of Evangelion is going. I know, I don't make any sense). For example, the black kitty in the OP, and why it is important to Madoka. And an expansion of Episode 10, which was by far my favorite episode.

True the Clannad film came first, but the Visual Novel was before that, and the story line did definitely not fit into a 100 min slot :P

The black cat, Amy, is actually explained in the first Drama CD. I don't know if the Drama CDs are considered canon, though... it was written by another author, Masaki Hiramatsu (who also wrote Kazumi Magica).

I don't think that a drama CD by a different author can be counted as canon. If the cat does appear in the films, can you imagine if it has a different name as weel? Could be confusing. I doubt the cat will appear though, as Nateman said, the intros for most anime's lead you on and tell you little to nothing about what is going to appear in the story.

P.S. Why are we doing this in spoil tags? Lol. Oh and typing posts on a Blackberry on the Tube is a pain in the butt -_-'

I added a [Spoiler] tag to the topic so that we don't have to! XD

I'd find it difficult to take anything by another author cannon. I read parts of Kazumi and I did not like it as much, and it just brought up too many questions about the original that didn't make sense.

Eh, in my opinion, both Kazumi and Oriko both seem to fit into the universe rather well; I'm willing to take any officially licensed materials as canon so long as they don't conflict with anything already out there.

I like how the lyrics of some of the songs (cough Credens justitiam cough) don't actually mean anything. They're not Latin or anything, they're just fitting sounds together in order to use the human voice purely as an instrument...which is pretty darn cool, I think.

So a question remains; obvious differences notwithstanding (such as living in a city or in the right time period for example), if given the opportunity to make a Contract, would you do it?

CONTRACT?

Honestly, yes. As horrible as the whole ordeal is, it'd be super cool for a while until I lose all hope. And hell, maybe I'd find some cool way to break the system with my wish.

If only you could with fore more wishes...
