Yeah, RoR increases the level cap to 85. I got the game, going to be playing it a bit and testing out mounted combat when I can.

Well, it's a good thing I didn't have to do any of the quests in the RoI regions (aside from the main quest) to hit level 75. Should give me a couple of easy levels.

Well, I'm getting that pervasive problem where the updater gets stuck on "examine game data", and apparently the only way to fix it is to completely reinstall the game and waste god knows how many hours of my life trying to update. Well, and then I have no assurance that this will actually work, so it'll probably continue because some fatass in patching development accidentally dropped his quintuple-bacon barbecue cheeseburger on his keyboard when renaming a single texture file or some Fuzzy Bunny. This is more annoying than windows update...

That's it; I'm convinced that game developers are just lazy.

There are other players on the forum experiencing the same problem. I believe that Turbine is looking into the problem though.

As for this expansion.... I just have one thing to say. I LOVE MOUNTED COMBAT! I love how I can customize my war steed, and I also love how you can choose between light/medium/heavy. For now, I am going with a light steed, and so far, I am surviving pretty well. I also sometimes switch between the medium steed too, which works out pretty well. The controls take a little bit to learn, but once you get used to them, mounted combat is fun!

I'm all for anything that allows me to move faster in order to clobber my many, many enemies sooner. (Did I mention my main is a Champion?)

Anyway, hopefully we get a clearer resolution on the game data problem soon; re-downloading the game doesn't really offer much assurance that a problem with, well... downloading the game is going to be solved.

Eadwulf, I think once you get in the game, you are going to enjoy the mounted combat, and the open tapping system. The players seem more helpful nowadays. :)

As for the data issue, I hope that gets solved soon for you and other players having problems with it. Hopefully there should be maintenance on that by Monday.

From the notes for an upcoming patch:

Quote:
A fix has been made to prevent the launcher from hanging at “examining game data.” This will not retroactively fix launchers that have already encountered the issue.

I was not pleased to read that. So, I reinstalled (thankfully I have the original game as well as Mines of Moria as hard copies. Shame the recent expansions didn't have discs.), and now I have to download three additional expansions worth of data.

They should've worked on a fix that would also fix launchers that have already encountered the issue, but I guess that would be too much work? At least they are coming out with a fix in an upcoming patch. I also hope that the upcoming patch fixes the small lag issue going around.

And that's the story of how I gave up on patching LOTRO.

That looks like a pain in the ass.

Indeed it is... Just to clarify, this is actually a new problem; before the client would just get stuck, but now it's just refusing to patch. Piece of crap...

Any luck in getting the client to run at all, or is it still busted?

To be honest I haven't tried yet. Been too busy with other things, and Guild Wars events are taking up my MMO time anyway.

So I decided to download LOTRO all over again lately, but I can't get it to install. Why? Because apparently they now use Pando Media Booster (a notorious piece of borderline malware) to install the patcher. I can't even get that part of it to start, and I can't find a torrent file that will allow me to just download the entire game.

God damn it all Turbine! You were doing so well back in 2011!

I thought they always used Pando media Booster. Have you tried installing the game through Steam? I've heard that they are going to update the launcher, and update the classes to use a skill tree type of set up. Also, they announced the Helm's Deep expansion to LOTRO.

Because it suffers a lot of the same problems that pando malware booster seems to have.

The good news is that I've managed to do a full reinstall from my game discs and haven't yet encountered last year's patching problem during the "examine game data" phase (who knows how long that respite will last...). The bad news is that I still have over fifty thousand files to download. Although, considering that I've suffered a recent three-day ban from GW2 for quoting George Carlin, that may not be as much of an impediment as it normally would...

Apparently 619 is 112% of about 31000 files. It seems this updater laughingly violates basic mathematics.
