Hey!

You may remember that I once made a 3-D game of sorts called Prism. And then I remade it in a different programming language and called it Solais.

Well, forget those guys. Off and on over the past year (the last three or so months in particular) I've been working on something else entirely. I call it Project Crissaegrim, and it's basically me attempting to make an MMO out of a platformer. It's slow going because I'm doing everything myself, but I'm learning quite a bit and it's finally at a point where I can have it up 24/7 because WHY NOT. I'm using Eadwulf's former server to host the game, which means that you can grab the game client and play it whenever you want!

Like right now!

Keep in mind this is a very early version--like I said, most of this is new to me and I'm handling every little piece of it: making the game, the server, the client-server communication, the mapmaker, etc. Right now you can move and jump and swing a sword that does nothing (but it will fairly soon) and see other players and chat with other players and that's more or less it. I intend to work on it for 2+ hours every day this summer, and I'm hoping it will advance quite a bit in that time!

Controls are listed on the game's web page. Hit M if the game goes off the bottom of your screen. There's a few chat commands too, type /help to see them.

Apparently one of my textures in the village is broken. It doesn't happen on my machine, so right now I think it's a side effect of hosting the game on a Linux server. I'll figure it out moving forward.

Special thanks to Kikori for all the dirt/grass textures, and special thanks to Kurt/Ventrue for giving me good advice with the programming all the time all of the time.

Thanks! :D

And thanks to everyone else who dropped by tonight! I believe we had Muscular Ape, Kikori, Magicana, Applequest, Muffin, and Sparky in all. The server's staying up, but I'm logging out so I won't be waiting to greet people at the top of the tower anymore.

I've got some ideas and improvements planned! You can always watch www.poorshark.com/game/ for updates, but I'll try to keep them posted here as well. :)

(P.S.
To anyone logging in later:
You clear the hard jump in the tower by starting on the hill, not the ledge.
And hitting the X key in front of the door takes you outside.)

I'm going to try this in a bit. I would offer my help if you like, but keep in mind the only thing I've really made a game with is game factory. I have a few other programs too, but I haven't used them much.

Indeed! 8) I didn't mention it on the page itself because for older computers it makes the game run very slightly slower, but I did mean to mention it here. Nice find.

FYI, I updated the map files so you can jump back up the Tower of Preludes if you want to. Also I gave a cheating ledge to its toughest leap, haha.

The map gets re-downloaded every time you play, so you don't actually need a client update or server restart to see the changes.

*adds that as a feature request* 8-[

Actually, for anyone interested, here is my list of upcoming stuff I'm going to focus on (albeit probably after finals week):

  • Fix texture problems (then I can expand the map a little bit
  • NPCs can be attacked (might revamp weapons a little here too, perhaps add a ray gun that fires shots)
  • Do some nifty interpolation calculations so other players/NPCs move smoothly instead of being all choppy
  • Set up a way for the game to remember your username between logins so you don't have to /setname every time

Hahaha cool. Hey, if you're taking feature requests, can you add a lethal pit with pointy sticks at the bottom?

And if you complete the last bullet point, then how can I ever multi-log and talk to myself? 8-[

I'm always taking feature requests. :) Sparky has a lot of opinions about improving this game, and usually they're pretty good! That being said, I can't guarantee that every request gets in.

But sure, lethal pit of death, why not. (Dunno how soon though because that would require a couple big changes, as there's no "walk into this area and insta-die" element in the code yet. (Actually there's no concept of dying yet either, hah!))

Oh it would still be doable, up until the point where you're actually required to create an account and log in a la RuneScape. (And even then, can you still multi-log in RuneScape on different characters?)

Release #3 is out! This version is mainly small fixes/improvements and map expansion. I recreated the structure of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night's Clock Tower, which you can access from the XII door in the far east if you want to give it a try.

Also, if you have a copy of release #2, it will crash if you play it now, so please download the new game client. One of the improvements in this release ensures that that will never be a problem again. 8)

My next big goal is making enemies attackable. They'll probably also drop money, and you can maybe buy items with that? We'll see!

Release #4 is out! Here's the update notes:

Updates:
  • New: Players and NPCs can be attacked, die, and respawn, and show remaining health to all players above their heads. Slay the Phanto enemies in the Clock Tower area to receive 3-use Party Popper items, which come in five increasingly-rare colors!
  • New: Progress bar appears when loading map data
  • New: Mouseover other players to see their names
  • New: Using /setname to change your name will keep that name the next time you play
  • New: Various inventory improvements
  • Changed: Players can no longer walk and attack at the same time
  • Various minor bugfixes and improvements
Coming soon:
  • Buy items that have different uses
  • World expansion and new enemies
  • Possible Inventory revamp with expanded space

Remember, as it says on the page itself, you can press M to resize your window if it turns out to be too small. I can probably fix that, but it's way low on my priorities list.
also my versioning thing might not be working, i'm gonna have to check that out
