Recently I fell victim to this, and to this day am still not sure how it happened. My xbox live account was somehow compromised and then the attached credit card was used to make a 74.99 purchase. This person recovered my gamer-tag and bought about 6000 MS points worth of FIFA 12 items, logged in my account and traded the items away. I have always been careful person when it comes to using good passwords, and not logging into unknown websites using my ID's etc. Unfortunately while xbox investigates the situation my xbox live account will be locked for what they said will be approximately 25 days. Not to mention the bank papers I have had to fill out to get a new card, and dispute the charges made.

I just wanted to give people a heads up, and to suggest that no matter how safe you think you are, you may want to check and update your security information. Make sure you have a hard password to guess and that your security question answer is not something people could easily find out. Personally from now on I will not be using a credit card linked to my xbox account and will just be buying cards. I should have learned my lesson after the PSN hacking while I had my credit card saved on there.

Personally I think something is going on either with xbox live or EA, especially since my EA account was changed without requiring e-mail confirmation.

Uh, wouldn't think that would happen given PSN's history.

Its why i always use prepaid cards, no need to worry about CC information being stolen in case of hacked account.

Ouch, that sucks. 25 days seems a bit ridiculous to me, though...

I wasn't particularly worried about the PSN scare, and was pleased with the outcome (free stuff) so meh. It always pays to have that $7.99 (or whatever the service is at your bank) a month identity theft protection on your accounts, though. That way this sort of thing is covered on several levels.

My roomate had this happen to him actually, he had never played Fifa before but the guy who recovered his account bought Fifa stuff and changed his location to the UK for some reason.

I don't think I have to worry about this though since the card associated with my account no longer works and I removed it earlier this month but thanks for the heads up.

So today I called xbox after receiving a voice mail asking me to call them back, and to my dismay my service investigation request had been closed. They claimed they could not find that my gamertag had been used on my console. This is after I verified the console ID and Serial number with a rep over the phone yesterday, which during the call even he claimed was the same information I gave during the initial call last month. Due to this I had to open a new investigation which means starting from the beginning and having to wait another 20 odd days to hear back from them. I am not sure what the deal is since I've been using this console from some time and the information I have given them regarding the ID and serial is %100 correct. I ended up pulling the serial and console ID from my old xbox since it's what my brother uses now, so hopefully that gets me somewhere.

Guess I'll have to wait and see what happens, but this is really starting to get annoying.

This is an perfect example of why they sell the prepaid cards for Xbox Live membership. I am very sorry to hear that this happened to you but I would suggest that you never subscribe to an online gaming service with a credit/debit card. Even with RuneScape I use a prepaid RS card.

I'd think you're an idiot (not you, just people in general) if you keep your CC information saved on anything. Console, banking sites, etc. If you have it auto-saved, you're just asking for that information to be stolen. Sure it's convenient to you so you do not need to re-enter it over and over again but it also makes it a whole lot easier to abuse it if they end up hacking your account.

Whenever I bought stuff on PSN, I deleted my information afterwards. Speaking of which, just remembered that it is saved on Stream. Deleting that right now lol.

Think of this as a lesson to be learned. A painful lesson, lol.
