Online currency. Avoid it like the plague.

It looks like a currency that can be used at the same rate over any different country that accepts it, keeping you from having to turn USD to Euros to Yen and back again for anything that takes just that one specific style of money. Why that's advantageous, I don't know. The only thing I can guess is that the rate of the bitcoin could potentially become more valuable than the currency you put into it (i.e. $5 = 5 bitcoins, later on $10 = 5 bitcoins, thus buying 5 now means you double your return later), but that's basically an investment gamble.

Yeah, what kikori said.
You can spend them like they are credits and they are supposed to be difficult to track(or something along those lines).

A guy at work got a server that he rents out for bitcoins. Supposedly it makes him enough to pay the server bills and then keep the extra.

It's kinda complex in some parts but bitcoins are "mined" by computers doing hashes and solving equations and stuff. There will never be more than [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Total_bitcoins_over_time.png]21 million bitcoins in existence[url], ever (although they can be broken up into fractions of a bitcoin.)

Really it's an experimental online currency thing. A bunch of companies accept them as actual currency but the rate fluctuates. I've got a couple of friends that bought high-powered servers specially set up to mine bitcoins all day, but these days you can't get a whole lot out of it because a ton of people are doing it and you basically have to join groups to get any (and the rate of new bitcoins is drastically slowing at all times anyway.)

One of the major reasons its lasted as long as it has is the fact that the currency can be traded relatively anonymously, thus making a black market for *anything* easier to secure. Money is traded from virtual "wallet" to virtual "wallet", which can only be accessed through whatever device you have the "wallet" on. No names. Just numbers.

It's a currency just like any other, all bitcoins are stored in a virtual 'wallet' which can be created online or through a desktop program / cellphone app. It gives you a long jumble of letters and numbers that is basically the code to deposit anything to your wallet. You can buy a lot of things with it, there are lists on the bitcoin wiki and other places I'm sure. The going rate for 1 bitcoin (BTC) is about $130-140 right now and as far as i'm aware its been around that price for the past few months.

There's multiple ways to get bitcoins, through a bitcoin exchange like mtgox or cavirtex or locally through localbitcoins.

People like to think it's a completely anonymous but currency, but its not. All the transactions are online for all to see, they're only as anonymous as the method you use to obtain them.

I see a lot of VPN websites letting people pay with BTC, also webhosts. Reddit also allows you to give users a bitcointip.

Actually not at all though. Bitcoins are $200 each right now, when SilkRoad shut down they were around 140-150. Bitcoins are here to stay regardless of if there's an underground market using them or not. Right now BTC are at the highest they've been in a few months.

Also, for every one that is destroyed, two more are created. SilkRoad wasn't the only 'black market' it was just the one that got the most media attention. We may think its a big deal that SR got shut down, but down in the deep web it's business as usual.

Hahaha that is awesome! I only knew about bitcoins a little over two years ago, but even then it could've been a good idea in hindsight, haha.

Not all at once.. probably around 100 at a time, but still.. Could've been living pretty decently now, considering its at $500 a coin...

Apparently a bitcoin is what you use to pay for your university tuition in Cypress
