I HATE ITUNES!!!!! i am so sick of this crap.
The only reason i still have itunes, is because i own an ipod.

Please tell me what MP3 player you have(and media player you use) and how you like it/what are its strengths and weaknesses.
after i decide what MP3 player i will get, i will probably give away my ipod.... if you are interested?

for media i would suggest VLC player (can also play mp3's), Infact if i have a file that i can't open with other media software VLC is my go to because its a packet-based media player, so it can it can play the video content of some damaged, incomplete, or unfinished videos.

actually i use VLC for movies. i like it. i also use it for mp3s if they are something i wouldnt listen to often, like if someone gave me a flash drive with a few songs on it.

do you have playlists and things on there?

I have all the codecs added and saved playlists in a folder i can open via vlc (under view > playlists). Its a bit clunky and not as easy as having playlists on the left side like itunes, but other than that i have had no problem with it.

Market, have you been moving files and folders around? iTunes is basically a list of addresses to your songs - you give it the location of your song, and it will find it and play it. If you move your song or even rename the folder its in, it will need to relocate it before it can play. This is true for Winamp too, and probably every media player out there.

Anyway, I gave up iTunes and iPods for a different reason: I prefer to use .flac files instead of .mp3, because they're much higher quality. But Apple products don't play .flac - they insist on using .alac, Apple's proprietary codec. It's equal in quality to .flac, but I'd have to convert my .flac files to .alac and I just don't feel like doing that every time I find new music!

So now I use Winamp and a Sansa Clip Zip. Both are easy to use, and they give me exactly what I need without any extra bullshit like Genuis or Coverflow. The Sansa Clip Zip may not look like much when compared to an iPod - it's made of plastic, has a tiny screen, and the menus aren't designed as cleanly as Apple's, but it's much less expensive, and it really packs a punch for its size.

I bought my mom a Sony E Series Walkman. It doesn't support .flac, but it's very solidly built and easy to use, and it can be synced with Winamp. And it's much cheaper than a comparable iPod. Their F Series players do support .flac, but they are far more expensive.

Get spotify premium, virtually any song you want, plus you can download them to any iPod to listen to offline as long as it can run apps. Worth every penny.

After iTunes, I went back to windows media player. It's already there and it hasn't screwed with me once.

Yup, I use windows media player myself. Though Winamp is also pretty cool, media player is just more convenient.

I use a Philips GoGear Vibe Mp3 player. It's 30 bucks (was?) for 4 gigs of space and honestly, the thing hasn't let me down.

I personally don't like Sansa players AT ALL, my girlfriend has been through two of them in a year and their touch based controls do nothing but piss me off. I like a player that actually has buttons.

I've been using MusicBee lately. Windows Media Player tended to get slower in certain actions once I got to about 5000 tracks, where this one still runs very smoothly at that point. Also, I find it very handy that it can generate the song titles and extract other information from the file name when I provide it with the structure of the file names, as I often want to add tracks that don't have proper meta-data set (such as in-game music).

For what it's worth, I absolutely loved Windows Media Player 11. It was everything I wanted and more.

Windows Media Player 12 dropped at least three of the things I found critical and I miss them horribly. I still use it because I prefer it to Winamp, but if I had the chance to safely downgrade to 11 I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Actually I think that not updating your WMP might be dangerous because of several security exploits in WMP11.
I don't know any specifics though, but I'd look it up before no updating it.
