Hey,

This is the first PC that I've ever built. I just needed some people to look over and make sure all the components that I have chosen work together and are good decisions. I'm open to suggestions that would lower the cost of the PC without hurting the performance.

Here are a few ideas I have:

  • Get a cheaper hard drive. 1 TB is a TON of space and I have no idea why anyone would need that much space. Also, there's no reason to get a WD Black hard drive. The Blue hard drives are fine and are cheaper.
  • Get a smaller case and motherboard. A Micro ATX motherboard will provide you with just as much functionality as a full size ATX motherboard. Also, smaller computers take up less space and look nicer.
  • If you don't plan on overclocking, don't bother getting an aftermarket CPU cooler. I just built a new computer like two weeks ago and I have a very similar processor (i5-3450) and with the stock cooler the CPU idles in the low 40's. Even during games it only gets up into the low 50's, which for a CPU is nothing.

Looks like a good build overall. :D

Depends what you're doing! At work we blow through terabytes like they're nothing. :awesome: (But yeah on my personal home computer I've only used like half that?)

Ended up going with this :

CPU - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6819116504
Mobo - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6813130645
RAM - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6820231428
GFX - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814500225
HDD - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6822136533
PSU - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817341051
CPU Fan - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6835103099
DVD Drive - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6827135204
Case - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6811119233
Thermal Grease - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6835100007
Came to $ 804.90 (CDN) w/ combos and Mail in Rebates

Changed CPU to a i5-3570k and a Z77 Mobo for overclocking.
GFX are now a Zotac GTX 560
Case is now a Cooler Master HAF

I realize that I didn't take any of your advice bart (sorry!) but I had my reasons:

1. 1 TB was a must for me. A have a lot of movie rips, for instance my LoTR rips are 90GB alone.
2. I wanted 2 PCI 3.0 x16 slots so my options were open for a future SLI upgrade. I believe there was only one mATX board in my price range and it's reviews weren't great.

Thanks for all the help though!
